Anne Paceo presents tracks that beautifully complete her universe on her latest EP Samâ and the music reflects the joy of life and nature engaged in a perpetual dance.

In Arabic, Samâ is the sacred dance of the Sufi whirling dervishes. The music in the Samâ is considered to be intimately connected with the entire Cosmos, it is spiritual listening, it is being inside “the presence”.

The Samâ dance is the expression of that listening. It reflects joy of life, abundant life and nature, all engaged in a perpetual dance. The Dervish symbolizes the constant circular motion of the planets and of the cycle of life, and music, for its part, becomes the sonic expression of this law of the Universe.

Every album by Anne Paceo is surprising. And each one of her projects is stunning. She’s always where we don’t expect her to be. It would be too simplistic to simply label her as a “jazz drummer”. With her, the genres have never been so beautifully fluid. Everything inspires her, motivates her, nourishes her. Jazz, of course, is one source of inspiration, but there’s also pop, song, electronic music, world music and blues. “I’ve never liked the boundaries between musical styles,” she insists. “It was the record industry that invented those boxes, but music goes beyond that. The important thing is that it speaks to the heart and soul to awaken our emotions, takes us on a journey and inspires us…” With Ann Shirley and Florent Mateo’s voices and her faithful accomplices Pierre Perchaud on guitar, Christophe Panzani on saxophone and Tony Paeleman on keyboards, Paceo has designed a firework display, just as colourful as it is rhythmic. And never being able to label the music of this eclectic Bright Shadowalbum is an asset that reinforces the mystery of each of her poems. – Max Dembo

Admittedly Anne Paceo can’t be faulted for resting on her laurels. Each of the drummer’s new album is its own island. In 2016 with Circles, all stylistic boundaries faded away, stereotypes crumbled and creativity ran at full speed! With its songs and instrumental swerving, telluric rhythms, as well as libertarian energy, her fourth album unfolded an organic, poetic and inspired groove in collaboration with singer Leila Martial, saxophonist Emile Parisien and Tony Paeleman on the keyboards. Two years later with Fables Of Shwedagon, Anne Paceo’s roadmap is very original once again. She took off for Myanmar to combine her artistic expression with the traditional orchestra Hsaing Waing, a formation dating back to the 17th century, and whose composition hasn’t changed since! It consists of five main instruments: the pat waing (a set of 21 drums in a circle, played with the hands), the maung hsaing (36 small gongs installed both horizontally and vertically, played with drumsticks), the chauk lon pat (7 large drums played with the hands), the hne (reed instrument) and the siwa (small bell and wood block).

Colorful, modern, sunny music, that bewitches and hooks. Brilliant musicians, a beautiful and tightly knit sound, complicity, made up of what is natural and pleasurable.’ Anne Paceo explores new horizons with the cream of the crop of French Jazz. Benjamin is from Daniel Yvinec’s National Orchestra of Jazz, Antonin-Tri Hoang’s personality alone sets him apart, as his grace and incredible musicality shine through his clarinet and alto saxophone. While Pierre Perchaud, easily swinging from electric guitar to acoustic, has the ability to escape the instrument in order to get the most out of it. Moreover, it is with strength and impeccable precision that Stephane Kerecki supports the balance of this young ensemble. Finally, Leonardo Montana, intricate part of the inner circle, the most loyal amongst the devoted, finds himself is led by his complicity with, and the rhythm of Anne Paceo’ sticks.

Anne Paceo appears as one of the more brilliant young French drummers in France. Her subtile touch on drums and cymbals is very personal. She met pianist Leonardo Montana and bassist Joan Eche-Puig at the CNSM in Paris (National music school) as they were students. Triphase is the name of the album and the name of the trio. It that stands apart from the rest of today’s productions’s, the themes and melodies remains in your mind as soon you hear them. Much more than just another Trio, this is a brilliant mix of 3 souls and 3 characters offering a taste of Catalonia, Brazil and Africa. Both three young artists are simple, spontaneous, full of energy and humor, found of encounters and exchange. Triphase is now touring with success all over the world.

No, Anne Pacéo is not a “jazz drummer” like the others. Nothing surprising then that her fourth album is also … different? With Circles, stylistic borders fade, received ideas crumble and creativity turbines at full throttle! Between songs and instrumental thrusts, telluric rhythms and libertarian breaths, these Circles unfold an organic groove, poetic and inspired. Solidly anchored in the current jazz scene but always eager for “other” collaborations, as was the case with Jeanne Added, Mélissa Laveaux and China Mose, Anne Paceo surrounded herself here with singer Leila Martial, saxophonist Emile Parisien and Tony Paeleman for keyboards. The drummer says it herself, this opus was designed differently. “Circles is the culmination of a long-term success over the last four years. It is the result of learning a new way of thinking about my music and conceiving it. For this record I worked around the theme of circles, loops, the cyclical character of time, things that die and then re-emerge in a new form. Circles is a succession of paintings, ranging from light to dark, from total destitution to bubbling, from internal storms to moments of calm and plenitude. “A palette of feelings that flourishes throughout a disc filled with surprises and highlights.
