Outside Problems consists of nine fleeting, expansive moments of instrumental improvisation and melodic exploration make up a new album that captures the sound of music in everyday life. It wasn’t so long ago that Andrew Bird was recording his music onsite for his Echolocations series, but it seems since then he has had a change of heart. With the series still unfinished, he has released the bold new album My Finest Work Yet whose cover was inspired by the famous 1793 painting La Mort de Marat by Jacques-Louis David. This time, the album was recorded live in studio and produced by Paul Butler, the champion of retro sounds who now brings us folk-rock road-trip tunes like Sispyphus with its 60’s vibe. The album’s lyrics are overtly political and make an appeal against Trump’s America as Bird started writing it after the elections had taken place. Upon listening to the music, it soon becomes clear that the title of the album is more of a humble truth than an attempt to brag as Bird is truly at the top of his game. Plush, sophisticated melodies are enhanced by vocals, whistling, strings and piano which all come together to produce a delightful sound. Although it may be America’s favourite instrument, in all but the folk ballad Bellevue Bridge Club the album favours a greater instrumental variety than just the violin. Well-produced and rich yet still light, we would have to agree with Bird – this is his finest work yet.  – Charlotte Saintoin

The polymathic Andrew Bird has released a holiday EP called HARK!, Pitchfork reports. The project includes some original songs, alongside winter standards like “White Christmas.” “I’ve never had the impulse to make a holiday record until last February. I found myself enjoying the Vince Guaraldi Peanuts records and thought I’d book a few days in the studio. It was an excuse to play some classic jazz with my favorite musicians. A lot of folks have a hard time with the holidays but they serve a purpose to us as a people—to create comfort, warmth and atmosphere within the darkness and the cold that can crush one’s spirit,” Bird reportedly said in a statement. “There are a couple originals in here that address this idea of light and warmth in the darkness as well as some classics that have some nostalgic resonance with me. Hark! What sounds come flowing alabaster?”

Andrew Bird releases Hark!, a brand new holiday album on Loma Vista Recordings. Building upon last year’s EP of the same name, the thirteen-song set delivers freshly recorded originals – including Christmas in April, perhaps the first COVID-inspired holiday song, which Andrew wrote during lockdown (“when will we know/if we can meet under the mistletoe?”) – plus holiday classics and wintertime reimagining’s of seasonally ambiguous deep cuts by John Cale, John Prine and Handsome Family. For the first time since 2002’s Ballad of the Red Shoes, Andrew Bird collaborated on the album artwork with his mother, who was also the inspiration for Hark!’s exquisite, solo violin arrangement of Mille Cherubini in Coro – her favourite piece from the Pavarotti and Vienna Boys Choir performance she and Andrew would always listen to when he was a child.

Andrew Bird has always been highly respected and has held a captive audience with his story telling prowess, but it’s with his new album, Are You Serious, that he has made a breakthrough record. Produced by Tony Berg, the album propels him into a new category of American songwriters. It’s his most direct lyrically to date with key contributions from Fiona Apple and Blake Mills.

Three years ago while traveling west to California to start a new life with his wife and young child they stopped at the family farm in rural Illinois for two weeks to catch their breath. The previous two years had been intense to say the least: raising a child in New York City as his wife battled a serious illness. With these dark days behind them he spent the next seven days on the front porch writing the lyrics for what became Are You Serious.  It’s a breakthrough for him in that it gets to the quick of the matter. This is the record he needed to make right now and is certain to put him in the leading class of American songwriter.
