A gifted singer and trumpeter, Spain’s Andrea Motis makes emotive, romantic jazz. Born in Barcelona in 1995, Motis studied trumpet and saxophone from a young age. By the time she was 13 years old, she was singing and playing trumpet in the Sant Andreu Jazz Band under the supervision of her mentor, saxophonist Joan Chamorro. In 2010, at age 15, she made her recorded debut with the standards album Joan Chamorro Presenta Andrea Motis. More well-received albums followed, including 2012’s Feeling Good and 2015’s Live at Palau de la Msica. In 2017, Motis made her Impulse! Records debut with Emotional Dance. ~ Matt Collar

If the little world of jazz wasn’t exactly slow to pick up on the outstanding talent of Andrea Motis — the great Quincy Jones in person told us all about her in 2012 when she was 17 (he’d invited her on stage at the Barcelona Festival) — there’s no question that the 2017 release of Emotional Dance, her first real album as a leader on the prestigious Impulse! label, suddenly took the career of this young Catalan singer-trumpeter into another dimension altogether.

With her latest solo project Loopholes, Andrea Motis, currently the exponent of the Spanish jazz scene, embarks on a search for a completely new, unconventional style with her formation and expanded concept with her own compositions and those of her comrade-in-arms Christoph Mallinger by borrowing from “electric jazz”, “funk” and “neo-soul”. Motis sings both soulfully and impulsively in Catalan, her mother tongue, as well as in Spanish, Portuguese, English and German, and comments on her vocal expression alternately – trained on both instruments – with trumpet or saxophone. Chet Baker and Dexter Gordon may have been the inspiration for this. As a young star, she recorded her first album with jazz standards at the tender age of 15 and later became the first Iberian artist ever to release on internationally renowned jazz labels. She has worked with Quincy Jones, Scott Hamilton, the classical cellist Yo-Yo Ma and the WDR Big Band, among others. We can look forward to Loopholes, which is scheduled for release in spring 2022.
