GRAMMY-nominated multireedist and composer Anat Cohen shifts her focus to an intimate group sound on her newest release, the endlessly colorful Quartetinho (pronounced “quar-te-CHIN-yo,” i.e., little quartet).

The group of New York-based international multi instrumentalist-virtuosos are all drawn from the ranks of her GRAMMY-nominated Tentet featuring bassist Tal Mashiach, pianist/accordionist Vitor Gonçalves, and vibraphonist/percussionist James Shipp. They share a deep love for music in all its heterogeneity and it’s all amply documented on Quartetinho, which includes originals by Cohen, Mashiach and Shipp along with material by the great masters Antonio Carlos Jobim, Egberto Gismonti and more. The result is boundlessly melodic and lyrical, with a wide array of timbres and subtle details of orchestration.

Continuing to blaze a trail as a poll-winning clarinetist and far-sighted bandleader, Cohen delves into the wealth of ideas summoned by Lev-Ari on “Triple Helix”: classical and contemporary sounds, Americana lyricism, Latin and Middle Eastern rhythms and more. The clarinet trill at the outset hints briefly at Rhapsody in Blue, subtly proposing a 21st-century perspective on Gershwin’s model of hybrid-genre works for the concert hall. The Tentet has grown from workshops at Shapeshifter Lab in Brooklyn to multi-night runs of rousing club experiences at the Jazz Standard in Manhattan as well as high-profile engagements at the Newport, Monterey and SFJazz Festivals.

On their debut recording as a duo Live In Healdsburg, Anat Cohen and Fred Hersch, two of most prolific and celebrated artists in jazz today display qualities they have in abundance: empathy, open hearts, big ears, quick instincts, and an ego-less approach to the music. These two expert collaborators combine virtuosity and beauty, which permeates every note they play. Live In Healdsburg comes on the heels of Anat’s Tentet recording, Happy Song, and her two Grammy nominated Brazilian albums, Outra Coisa: The Music of Moacir Santos (with 7-string guitarist Marcello Gonçalves) and Rosa Dos Ventos (with Trio Brasileiro). For Fred Hersch, Live In Healdsburg is the follow up recording to his latest CD, the double Grammy nominated Open Book (his 7th and 8th nominations). This album with Ms. Cohen is the latest release in a stunningly deep discography that dates back to the 1980s and encompasses more than twenty albums as a leader, and the publication of his autobiography Good Things Happen Slowly: A Life In and Out of Jazz.

For Outra Coisa, Marcello Gonçalves arranged a dozen Moacir Santos pieces from their large-ensemble scores into intimate, lyrical duets, with Anat often playing in the rich lower register of her instrument and Gonçalves channeling the orchestral textures of the originals into his 7-string guitar. “The music of Santos has always been such a treasure,” says Gonçalves, a longtime member of Trio Madeira Brasil. “But it wasn’t until I started going closely through his scores that I realized how natural they feel on guitar, as if they had been composed for the instrument.

Moacir Santos’ music has this lightness and freedom,” Gonçalves adds. “Anat can really dance and sing with it – just listen to her beautifully warm sound and playful phrasing in ‘Nanã’ and ‘Coisa No. 1.’”.
