Psych rockers All Them Witches are following Lightning at the Door with their third album, Dying Surfer Meets His Maker, on October 30 via New West Records (their first for the label). There are undoubtedly some throwback vibes to their sound, but ATW sound like they have bigger goals in mind than simply being a retro band. The album’s new single “Dirt Preachers” has clear production and the kind of big, catchy melodies that could’ve broke on the radio just as easily in 1975 as 2005. It probably won’t now though, which says more about rock radio than it does about the strength of this song.

All Them Witches are a neo-psychedelic, dark blues quartet from Nashville. They unapologetically use the music of earlier eras to forge a loose, spacy, hard rock sound of their own. While it is easy to pick out influences – including Blue Cheer, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Mountain, Gris-Gris and Sun, Moon & Herbs-era Dr. John, and the electric Delta swamp blues of Junior Kimbrough – it is much more difficult to pin them down due to a unique meld of crafted songwriting and spacious grooves. This, the fourth full-length release for the psychedelic rock band led by Charles Michael Parks Jr., was produced by Dave Cobb.

All Them Witches have built a career out of playing music that can not be pigeonholed into one specific genre. Nothing as the Ideal was recorded in Studio 2 at the world famous Abbey Road with the help of longtime mixing engineer Mikey Allred. The history and vibe of that setting laid the groundwork for what was to come. The band’s signature psychedelic blues riffs, relentless drums, melodic bass lines and non-linear lyrics are all present. The resulting album is a thought provoking head banger that is the band’s most cohesive album to date.

2017’s Sleeping Through the War saw the Tennessee-based psych-blues outfit drop a largely song-oriented set of cosmic stoner metal emissions that dialed back on some of the more exploratory aspects of their previous outings. With the simply titled ATW, All Them Witches have married both sensibilities, delivering tense, doomy highway burners (“Workhorse”), greasy Southern groove-blues goodies (“Fishbelly 86 Onions”), and brevity-averse “Dazed & Confused”-inspired slow jams (“Harvest Feast”), all of which sound like they were born of an epic 4/20 jam session. Free — for better or for worse — of the stylish, yet tasteful sonic fingerprints of producer Dave Cobb, who helmed Sleeping Through the War, ATW is a homespun affair self-recorded in a cabin just outside of Nashville. Raw and unembellished, it lacks the luster of its predecessor, but it feels truer to the band’s retro-leaning D.I.Y. aesthetic. Their predilection toward pairing classic rock architecture with heavy-psych dynamics is made apparent early on, but it really takes hold midway through via the slow-burn single “Diamond” and the over-ten-minute “Harvest Feast,” both of which take their time getting to the finish line, but do so with equal amounts of rumination and menace. Zeppelin-isms loom large throughout the relatively spry 52-minute runtime, but Black Sabbath casts a formidable shadow as well, with doomy riffage in great abundance — the early portions of closer “Rob’s Dream” echo the sinister atmospherics of “Planet Caravan.” All Them Witches certainly don’t rush things, but that doesn’t make their approach to the genre feel any less immediate. If anything, ATW feels like a product of pure instinct, and while it may take some patience to absorb, there isn’t a single note that feels coerced. – James Christopher Monger

All Them Witches are known for their loud and lengthy live shows – 2020 found the band releasing their critically acclaimed album, Nothing As The Ideal – An album release from this band would traditionally be followed by a lengthy 18-month tour across the globe. Due to an international pandemic, the band’s touring plans were brought to a halt. This did not stop All Them Witches from assembling in a studio to broadcast a live set for their fans. The set was roundly received as an amazing performance and fans immediately inquired as to whether or not this show would be available outside of the broadcast. New West Records is proud to present All Them Witches – LIVE ON THE INTERNET.
