“It is difficult to think of Mendelssohn without being reminded of the extraordinary evocative power of his music, capable of conjuring up bright Italian sunshine, grey Scottish landscapes, and the magical world of fairies. He was a child prodigy and an outstanding composer, but he tends nevertheless to be neglected, compared to other members of his generation in the nineteenth century – to the detriment of his art, which is fascinating in so many ways.

With Les Ambassadeurs ~ La Grande Écurie, Alexis Kossenko embarks on a series of concerts and recordings devoted to Mendelssohn’s complete orchestral works, played on period instruments, with the forces that would have been used in his day, and also focusing on versions that we rarely have an opportunity to hear. For indeed, Mendelssohn was a great perfectionist, constantly dissatisfied with his own work, which he therefore revised to the extent that there are now often several versions of the same score. The first volume in this series is devoted to his Symphony no. 4, “Italian” (1834 version), and Symphony no. 5, “Reformation” – in fact his second in order of composition (written at age of twenty) and his first great symphony.”

Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764) left two very different versions of his tragédie en musique Zoroastre: the first, in 1749, suffered from cabals and the work was withdrawn from the repertory. Rameau gave it a thoroughgoing revision in 1756. At this time, he was at the height of his powers. Melody, harmony, orchestration and choral writing no longer held any secrets for him. Zoroastre brought still further innovation. For the first time, he dispensed with a prologue, and turned the overture into a philosophical ‘program’, the struggle between day and night, between good and evil. The 1749 version is entirely governed by avant-garde ideas; Zoroastre resembles Tamino in Die Zauberflöte, but two generations earlier. This disconcerted some of the audience: Zoroastre was a moral, social and philosophical opera. The 1749 version has never been revived in modern times. Alexis Kossenko takes up the challenge with zest, accompanied by an outstanding cast including Véronique Gens, Jodie Devos, Reinoud Van Mechelen, Mathias Vidal and Tassis Christoyannis.

Musettes, hurdy-gurdies, and flutes formed the dream countryside of Rococo-style salons, that of Watteau’s painting Concert Champêtre (1727), when Naudot’s Fantaisies were enjoying their hour of glory. The fashion for “pastoralism” was in full swing, and professional musicians as well as great amateurs vied with each other in “pastoral” concertos where musettes and hurdy-gurdies featured heavily. These instruments were popular originally, garnering great skill to rise to the heights of virtuoso: enough to enchant Louis XV’s courtesans and those close to La Pompadour! Alexis Kossenko reveals these wonderfully outdated gems to us as a bold shepherd.

From them, Alexis Kossenko has chosen two concertos with orchestra: one for flute, the other for flute and violin, preceded by an overture.

This programme is perfectly composed to demonstrate what a great Baroque conductor he has become as well as, of course, showcasing his impressive qualities as a flautist. It is also the occasion to again find Zefira Valova as Konzermeister and soloist in one of the concertos.

Les Ambassadeurs launch a series of recordings devoted to the repertory of the Dresdner Hofkapelle at the time of Bach, with the aim of rediscovering the splendid sound of an ensemble then regarded as the orchestral ideal. The ties of friendship between Johann Georg Pisendel – who led the orchestra – and Antonio Vivaldi held firm for life. Between their first meeting in Venice in 1716 and the death of the Prete Rosso in 1741, Pisendel continually enriched his collection of Vivaldi concertos, a certain number of which were manifestly tailor-made for his outstanding technique and equally exceptional delicacy of expression. This explains why Dresden holds so many Vivaldian treasures, sometimes autograph, sometimes copied in Pisendel’s own hand.

Although the concertos assembled by Les Ambassadeurs bear no explicit dedication, there can be little doubt that they were expressly written for the Dresden orchestra: they feature the instrumentation typical of the court Kapelle, with its horns and oboes vying for prominence with the violin.

Unjustly forgotten, Eugène Walckiers left some extraordinary chamber music: works that are amazingly theatrical and lyrical, and constantly full of humor. Behind hints of Beethoven, Rossini, Berlioz or Mendelssohn, with a touch of folk music here and there, we perceive the mischievous personality of an unclassifiable, iconoclastic and irresistible composer. Alexis Kossenko and a group of exceptional soloists revive these treasures, for the most part recorded here for the first time, with relish and enthusiasm.

“Playing Mozart’s concertos poses the same problem for a flutist as Bach’s sonatas and partitas do for a violinist or his suites for a cellist. This problem is encountered with masterpieces that entered our repertoire too early; when we are confronted with the admirable before the ordinary or when we are taught the exception before the rule. How can we find the distance that will allow us to offer a personal reading? How can we take an objective look at what is already familiar? How can we judge and appreciate as an adult what we have been fed since our earliest childhood? How can we question the precepts taught us in our early years of study? How, finally, to escape from the prison of tradition?

For his new album Soave e virtuoso, Alexis Kossenko went on the trail of rare scores from the baroque era. Partitions that remind us that the Italian repertory, if it gives pride of place to the the violin and the voice, nevertheless doesn’t forget wind instruments. At the head of his ensemble Les Ambassadeurs, the conductor and flutist Alexis Kossenko performs delightly concertos by Tartini, Vivaldi and Sammartini. Sometimes voluptuous, sometimes dreadfully acrobatic, these scores require technique and sensitivity from the soloist. With a jubilant virtuosity, at the service of expressiveness, Alexis Kossenko, multi-skilled musician as at ease with flute as with recorder, brings life in colors to the works of the three Italian composers.

In France, during the reign of Louis XIV, the religious service known as Tenebrae was one of the most distinctive ceremonies in the liturgical year. Gradually, in the course of the office, the candles were extinguished, recalling the darkness that covered the earth when Jesus died on the cross.

Charpentier composed Tenebrae settings throughout his career, thirty-one lessons in all. The three presented here, written for the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of Holy Week, are scored for a solo bass voice, accompanied by an orchestra composed of recorders, oboes, strings, bassoon and organ.

After the success of Vivaldi’s Concerti per il flauto traversier (Gramophone Editor’s Choice), flautist and conductor Alexis Kossenko, rising star of the younger generation of Baroque musicians, and the fine ensemble Arte Dei Suonatori present a new vision of this highly dramatic work by Marc-Antoine Charpentier.

Flautist Alexis Kossenko’s latest offering is evocative, impressionistic: a programme in which flute, piano and voice together have pride of place.

In the company of Anna Reinhold, Sabine Devieilhe, Magali Mosnier and Emmanuel Olivier, Alexis Kossenko blends melodie and chamber music through a fascinating programme that explores the various influences of French music in the early Twentieth Century.

From Ancient Greece (with Maurice Emmanuel’s Odelettes anacréontiques or Debussy’s very famous Syrinx) to the Orient, with Jacques Ibert and Maurice Ravel (Asie), the musicians deploy a great colour palette, to the image of Monet or Renoir’s vivid paintings. The result is a fine picture of French music at the time of Debussy.
