The Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century continues true to its original guiding spirit, with a new recording of the six Hamburg Symphonies, Wq 182 by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. This second son of JS Bach, Carl Philipp has sometimes had a rough ride with posterity (and with some of his contemporaries too). Although overshadowed later by Haydn and Mozart – albeit admired by the pair – and overshadowed in his lifetime by Handel, he remains a crucial link between the Baroque and the Classical, particularly for the ultra-sensitive style, his Empfindsamkeit.

Director and violinist Alexander Janiczek leads principal players from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in this beautifully intimate recording. Mozart’s writing allows each player to shine and demonstrates the depth of talent within the ensemble, illustrating why this orchestra has had such extensive success with its previous Mozart recordings. The works on this disc are full of well-known tunes which demonstrate Mozart’s trademark melodic beauty. Acclaimed oboist, Robin Williams, gives a dazzling performance of the composer’s great masterpiece. The Chamber Orchestra of Europe performs Stravinsky’s Apollon Musagète and Pulcinella Suite, repertoire that demands the fresh and energetic delivery for which the COE is renowned. The COE deliver the ‘wonderful freshness’ Stravinsky himself envisioned in Apollon Musagète with their bright and spirited performance. The Guardian commented: ‘In Stravinsky’s Apollon Musagète each and every player contributed to the distinctive, rich-toned sonority.’

The Pulcinella Suite is a ballet based on some of Pergolesi’s most memorable music. The COE has recorded the more unusual 1949 ‘revised’ version of the 1922 concert suite which is in eight sections and performed without voices. The Independent commented: ‘Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite brimmed over with the energy and insight of first-rate musicians discovering every opportunity such sunny music offered them.’

The COE recorded this album at Église Maronite Notre-Dame Du Liban, Paris, in November 2008. They performed this Stravinsky programme at Cité de la musique, Paris, Konzerthaus, Vienna and Philharmonie, Luxembourg to widespread critical acclaim.

The ‘Clarinet Concerto No. 1 in F minor’ and ‘Concertino for Clarinet & Orchestra in C minor / E-flat Major’ were composed at a pivotal time in the instrument’s development. A new style of playing which was soft, full and rich in tone inspired several composers to write for the instrument, whilst inspiring Weber to write what would become one of the cornerstone’s of the clarinet repertoire. Clarinettist Maximiliano Martín was praised for his performance of Weber on 2009’s Vibraciones del Alma with The Herald admiring his ‘liquid virtuosity, which flows like oil’…
