Alexander Claffy, who comes from the Philadelphia area, is the son of a pianist and a singer, which meant that he was surrounded by music from an early age. He initially played electric bass before switching to double bass. He first had lessons with bassist Mike Boone, then with Dwayne Burno, Ben Wolfe, Gregg August and Ron Carter. He studied at The New School.

Traditionally as a young artist’s career develops, the proverbial “music business” whittles their musicianship down to the most narrow box it can fit in, finding a neat label to pigeonhole their name into for all futureofferings. Occasionally, singular artists rail against that conformist machine, and put out a wide range of music that encompasses the entire breadth of their influences and taste, labels be damned. Alex Claffy is one of those artists.

This sophomore recording by bass phenom Alexander Claffy features a collection of familiar standards spanning several generations, from the American Songbook tradition to mid-20th century jazz classics to a Beatles favorite. Following his debut album, with its focus on a blend of contemporary soul and hip hop influences, it would be tempting to contrast the two projects as a looking forward/looking back dichotomy. This new album defies such easy categorization, however, with with deeply personal readings that update timeless melodies with an utterly timely approach.
