The 3 Violin Sonatas by Edvard Grieg are a mixture of German and Austrian traditions with the Nordic folk. The experience at the Leipzig Conservatory, where the strong influence of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Robert Schumann was felt, and the trips to Italy, especially Rome, where Grieg met Franz Liszt, contributed greatly to the formation of the style of the Norwegian composer. Similarly of crucial importance were the years he spent in Copenhagen where he completed his studies under the guidance of the Danish composer Niels W. Gade.
The complete Sonatas for violin and piano are included in this album signed by the well-matched couple Cammarano-Deljavan who has already recorded the works by Johannes Brahms and Anton Rubinstein. The 7-mic recording by Alessandro Simonetto is fully dynamic and realistic.

This recording is the the first collaboration of Italian pianist Alessandro Deljavan with Artalinna. It brings together three contrasting Sonatas and the famous Variations in F minor by Joseph Haydn, in fact two works from his full maturity (1793, 1794) with two opuses from the middle period (1774-1778) during which Haydn, the ebullient revolutionary, laid down the standards of the classical forms that were to structure a large part of creation until the end of the 19th century. The two scores of the 1790s represent a supreme achievement of “classical” genius.

Raffaele Bellafronte (born 1961) is one of the foremost contemporary composers of Italy. He studied piano, composition and analysis. He has taught in several Italian Conservatories and today he teaches at the Conservatory of Campobasso. Raffaele Bellafronte’s music is free, mobile, rich in distant echoes and yet tenaciously reflecting today’s reality. It has a strong communicative character without slavishly following existing or ancient traditions. Bellafronte has produced a wide-ranging body of work in a modern tonal idiom. Previous albums of concertos, guitar music and chamber works paint a portrait of a lively mind and a personal voice embracing large dramatic gestures and lyric reflection, each as quintessentially ‘Italian’ in their expression as the other.
