André Mathieu was born in Montreal on February 18, 1929. He received his first music lessons from his father Rodolphe Mathieu, and was already composing little piano pieces by the age of four. Noël Strauss of The New York Times wrote that even Mozart, the greatest musical prodigy of all time, only began composing at the age of four, and his first works were much simpler in nature than those of the young Canadian. André Mathieu astonished audiences far and wide with his pianistic prowess from a very young age: at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Montreal at six, in the Salle Pleyel and Salle Gaveau in Paris at seven, in Carnegie Hall, New York at ten. Rachmaninov pronounced him “a genius, more so than I am.”

Canadian pianist Alain Lefèvre has long championed the music of pianist-composer André Mathieu (1929-1968). As a child prodigy, Mathieu caused a sensation as ‘the Canadian Mozart’ in New York and Paris (where he studied with Yves Nat and Arthur Honegger), but he eventually died in poverty at the age of just 39. On this album, Lefèvre and fellow pianist Hélène Mercier play three works written by Mathieu in the 1940s. “André Mathieu’s music it has its own place in the history of composition,” says Lefèvre. “It has been described as Romantic, and obviously was out of step with its own age, but does that really matter today?”

Recently described as a “new personality that truly stands out from the typical trends and artifices offered on the international scene…” (Classica), Alain Lefèvre has been invited by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London, the SWR in Stuttgart, the Hambürg Symphony and the Nürnberger Symphony, the Detroit Symphony, the National Symphony in Washington, the Houston Symphony, the Pacific Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonie de Lorraine, the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony and the Moscow Virtuosi, just to name a few. He also worked with renowned conductors such as Christoph Eschenbach, Charles Dutoit, Matthias Bamert, Vladimir Spivakov, Yan Pascal Tortelier, Clair St-Clair, Jukka-Pekka Saraste and Georg Tintner, and with composers Pierre Max Dubois, Henri Dutilleux and John Corigliano. His CD entitled Lylatov, featuring in a world premiere some of his own original works, was praised by both the public and the press when released in 2000, so as the best-seller Carnet de notes, released in 2002.
