Anna Marie Wooldridge, known professionally as Abbey Lincoln, was an American jazz vocalist, songwriter, and actress. She was a civil rights activist beginning in the 1960s. Lincoln made a career not only out of delivering deeply felt presentations of standards but writing and singing her own material. “It’s Magic” is her third album featuring tracks recorded in 1958 for the Riverside label.

Abbey Is Blue is the fourth album by American jazz vocalist Abbey Lincoln featuring tracks recorded in 1959 for the Riverside label.

Allmusic awarded the album 4½ stars, with the review by Scott Yanow stating: “Abbey Lincoln is quite emotional and distinctive during a particularly strong set… very memorable”. All About Jazz also gave the album 4½ stars, with David Rickert calling it “a breakthrough performance in jazz singing”, and observing: “With the civil rights movement looming over the horizon, no longer did singers need to stick with standards and Tin Pan Alley tunes and could truly sing about subjects that mattered to them. Lincoln picked up Billie Holiday’s skill at inhabiting the lyrics of a song and projecting its emotional content outward, and these songs, all of which deal with sorrow, are stark and harrowing accounts of loss and injustice.”

Reissued several times since it originally came out on a Candid LP, this is one of Abbey Lincoln’s greatest recordings. It is a testament to the credibility of her very honest music (and her talents) that Lincoln’s sidemen on this date include the immortal tenor saxophonist Coleman Hawkins (who takes a memorable solo on “Blue Monk”), Eric Dolphy on flute and alto, trumpeter Booker Little (whose melancholy tone is very important in the ensembles), pianist Mal Waldron, and drummer Max Roach. Highpoints include “When Malindy Sings,” “Blue Monk,” Billie Holiday’s “Left Alone,” and “African Lady.”
