In a fractured, social media-fuelled music landscape, few things are more valuable to an emerging artist than a co-sign from a superstar. That bodes well for Snoh Aalegra, a Swedish-born, LA-based singer with collaborations and endorsements coming out of her ears. In the two years before his death, she was mentored by Prince; in 2017, Drake sampled one of her songs for his mixtape More Life. She has worked with Vince Staples and Common and, on this record, Tyler, the Creator and the Neptunes. Underpinning these impeccable connections is her longstanding association with the producer No ID, the man who mentored Kanye and is now married to Aalegra’s cousin.
Boogie, Dvsn, Alicia Keys, Rejjie Snow, Vic Mensa… Between 2019 and 2021, the list of renowned artists who have invited Snoh Aalegra to feature on their tracks is long., so there’s nothing surprising in seeing a slew of heavyweights come on board for the Swedish singer’s own projects. On her third album, Temporary Highs In The Violet Skies, leading producers such as No I.D., the Christian Rich duo and Compass have built up a tracklist with synthetic beats backing up an R’n’B sound which is deeply influenced by Janet Jackson and Timbaland. The 1990s are put through the mill of modernity and the result is a superb record, which is emotional on Taste and Everything, but also full of groove. The dream team of beatmakers is rounded out by two big beasts: The Neptunes on In Your Eyes (certainly the best track on the album) and Tyler, The Creator, who makes a guest appearance on two tracks as both artist and producer, namely In The Moment and Neon Peach. With such a meeting of talents, it would have been hard to put a foot wrong, and Snoh Aalegra hasn’t. In fact, she went one better than that: Temporary Highs In The Violet Skies is definitely one of the very best R’n’B releases of 2021. – Brice Miclet
