“Sir” Oliver Mally, our blues favorite from the south of Austria, has made a name for himself in professional circles beyond the country’s borders. And this, although – or just because – he is not one of those dogmatists who do not accept anything outside the pure doctrine and narrow niche. From Mally one has heard Bob Dylan or Nirvana interpretations (“Smells Like Teen Spirit”) as well as sensitively adapted reenactments of his idols Albert King, Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, BB King or Albert Collins.

“The self-taught musician got his first guitar at the age of 15,” notes Wikipedia. The “best blues singer in the country” (Samir H. Köck, “Die Presse”) is constantly on tour anyway – between Hamburg and Budapest, Graz and Waidhofen an der Thaya, but in between he also likes to play at the Himalayan Blues Festival in Nepal. “Amadeus” nominations and ten category trophies in the critics’ poll of CONCERTO magazine have no place in his luggage, but his instrument is indispensable. “He still plays his guitar himself, he sings with dedication, heart and soul, he feels himself,” summed up the “Oberösterreichische Nachrichten”. “And he cares as little about conventions as (unfortunately) far too few in Austria care about him.”

So now he sings and plays Dylan. Pure. We are curious. The cover, by the way, is a reminiscence of the legendary album “Byrds play Dylan”.

“Sir” Oliver Mally positions the song spotlights of the Bob Dylan compositions differently and lets them shine in a personally colored light. The ice performed at the beginning has held and the artist has not crashed. Kudos!” ROCKTIMES (D)

“With a mixture of sincere respect and confident nonchalance, Mally’s interpretations stay close to the originals without sounding arbitrary. We hear a respectable homage.” VIENNA NEWSPAPER (AUT)

An undertaking that can be called more accomplished. Unpretentious, accompanying himself on guitar, Mally sings his favorite Dylan songs with larmoyant attitude without ever becoming embarrassing. An affectionate approach to the grandmaster.” BOX (AUT)

“Nine tracks full of reverence and respect for the old master, an endeavor that never slips into glorification or cheap copying. With a dust-dry voice and an equally held guitar, the Styrian convinces in every moment. The point of the exercise: to show Dylan songs in a new light. And that, it should be said in all clarity, has succeeded extremely well. Favorite song: “Blind Willie McTell”. Predicate: Great stuff!” GREBE (AUT)

“”Sir” Oliver Mally circumnavigates the dangerous cliffs of cramped different-sounding adaptations. Not that he plagiarizes instead. No, he takes the original and leads it into his singer/songwriter cosmos, adds his unexcited guitar and especially his roughened voice and makes the songs his own as a matter of course. An intimate homage.” CONCERTO (AUT)
