At 37 years old, Scott DuBois is one of the most prominent guitarists on the New York scene. Since being discovered alongside the great saxophonist Dave Liebman (who guests on this album, courtesy of the label Soul Note, as he did on 2005’s Monsoon and 2007’s Tempest), DuBois has refined his style with his quartet consisting of Gebhard Ullman (saxophone and bass clarinet), Thomas Morgan (bass) and Kresten Osgood (drums). Here, then, are many capable musicians, who display their chops by alternating between sequences that meditate, and then rage. The guitarist is virtuoso in his pyrotechnical display, and lets his accomplices express themselves appropriately alongside him. All of this makes Winter Light a beautiful opus of masterful contemporary jazz.
