The first joint album from countertenor Philippe Jaroussky and guitarist Thibaut Garcia, À sa guitare takes its name from a song by the 20th century French composer Francis Poulenc. But its frame of reference is extraordinarily wide – both culturally and stylistically. Its 22 tracks range across 400 years and music by composers and songwriters from France, Britain, Austria, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Argentina and the USA. “The album is a journey between different cultures, different continents and different languages,” says Philippe Jaroussky, “but each piece is a world in itself. The idea was to take some risks… sometimes moving to a completely different world between one track and the next.” “We can evoke hugely different colours as we juggle between renaissance music and a song by Barbara,” explains Thibaut Garcia. “It’s our job to play with a palette of colours to produces something unique… We put a great deal of thought into the album, but we also put our hearts into it.”

From John Dowland to Benjamin Britten, visiting en passant Barbara, Fauré and Rossini, Philippe Jarrousky and Thibaut Garcia revisit five centuries of music in this very intimate album.

The young guitarist from Toulouse and the countertenor from Versailles come together beautifully: a cross-interview for the simple text accompanying the programme allows us to discover the communicative complicity of two musicians from different generations. Despite his certain willingness to share the bill equally, one must admit that Thibaut Garcia on guitar is slightly more dominant: at ease in all styles—his interpretation of Schubert’s arrangement of Erlkönig is strikingly virtuoso—he always accompanies Philippe Jaroussky with great elegance, more or less convincingly depending on the piece. Nevertheless, there are some very enjoyable surprises, such as the delicate version of Barbara’s Septembre.

The listener may be a little bewildered by the extent of the period covered; indeed, it is difficult to segue seamlessly from one universe to another. But everyone is free to select and choose according to his or her taste between a Fauré Nocturne and a Rodríguez tango. Therefore let us welcome this recital for what it is, a beautiful story of friendship: after all, music is also a sharing experience. – Pierre Lamy
