London-based singer-songwriter, producer and DJ, SG Lewis, releases his second studio album AudioLust and HigherLove. Highlights include the album’s euphoric opening track, ‘Infatuation’ and ‘Vibe Like This’, featuring Grammy-award nominated powerhouse Ty Dolla $ign and Grammy-award winning rising star Lucky Daye. The singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer builds on the kaleidoscopic future-disco of his debut album times, in an expansive and ambitious record made of two halves: on one end of the spectrum, he crafts the kind of nocturnal bangers that dancefloors, underground raves, pool parties, and festivals subsist on. On the other end, he accesses a higher level of timeless pop ecstasy anchored by just the right amount of breezy hook-laden rock, organic instrumentation, and vocal eloquence. He suits one mood to the adrenaline rush of your wildest night out, and he tailors another to the blissful ride home at sunrise. It’s a diverse collection of classic but deeply contemporary cuts from one of the richest production talents of the last decade and includes a blockbuster collection of guests, alongside SG’s own vocals which are featured more prominently than ever before.

Gro-Marthe Dickson is a Norwegian jazz singer with vibrant inventiveness and absolute power in her singing. Dickson is continuously searching for unknown paths to explore and develop in her musical journey. Her main projects are the jazz quartet D-lovely (AMP Music & Records 2019 and 2021) and the vocal improvisation ensemble Oslo14 (Losen Records 2018, NOR CD 2016). Her music blends famous and favorites with lesser-known pearls from Cole Porter’s long and prosperous career. D-lovely presents jazz that is charming, passionate, and has a creative twist that makes a statement through popular music’s greatest composer, Cole Porter. Dickson is now releasing her latest AMP Music & Records album called Fornemmelsen Av Hjemland (The feeling of homeland). Dickson has crafted original Norwegian lyrics to Cole Porter’s melodies, and with those new lyrics, new musical ideas are achieved. The members of D-lovely are Aksel Westlund (guitar), Håkon Norby Bjørgo (bass), and Magnus Sefaniassen Eide (drums).

Greta Van Fleet – The Battle at Garden’s Gate (2021) [Official Digital Download 24bit/44,1kHz]

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 01:03:39 minutes | 762 MB | Genre: Rock
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Republic Records

The Battle at Garden’s Gate is the kind of album title that accurately reflects the contents within. Greta Van Fleet isn’t much concerned with the modern world, preferring to live in a fantasy of their own creation, one cobbled together with ideas learned from old albums from Led Zeppelin, Rush, and Styx. All these elements were in place on their 2018 debut Anthem of the Peaceful Army, but they’re amplified on The Battle at Garden’s Gate, an album that makes everything that worked the first time bigger and louder, or just more. The group’s unexpected success meant they had the power to enlist an A-list producer, so they brought Greg Kurstin – a Grammy winner for his work with Adele and Beck who also helmed records by Paul McCartney and Foo Fighters – into the studio to help shape their fanciful notions and heavy riffs. Kurstin manages to conjure the expansive vistas that were so common in 1974, letting the band puff up their pomp and ramble on. As texture is Greta Van Fleet’s main gift, this is for the best: the extra length gives the impression that the group is in control of their fantasy. This spell works best when guitarist Jake Kiszka, bassist Sam Kiszka, and drummer Danny Wagner labor to conjure the ghost of Houses of the Holy, paying rapt attention to the slight shifts in light and shade. The spell is punctured whenever Josh Kiszka stumbles in to caterwaul his tales of barbarians and nations. More Geddy Lee than Robert Plant, Josh Kiszka commands attention then alienates; his wail is the weak link in a group who is getting better at their period-accurate cosplay. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

‘Americana’ represents an exciting collaboration between two prodigious musicians: harmonica great Gregoire Maret and acclaimed pianist Romain Collin. Grégoire Maret is a phenomenon and a master musician. He is a virtuoso with a vivid imagination and a sublime way of giving shape to a melody. Collin, meanwhile, has been described by NPR as “a visionary composer, an extraordinary jazz pianist” and by the Boston Globe as being “among the leading lights of a new breed of players.” Upon meeting each other in New York, the two musicians bonded over a shared love of jazz, song and pure melody. Together they embarked on a project which would explore the musical depths of the American soul. They turned to the uniquely great Bill Frisell to help forge a connection between American songwriting and the high art of instrumental playing. In this musical world, vast soundscapes co-exist with epic stories.

Has it really already been 50 years since The Grateful Dead released their debut album? My, my, those half-centuries certainly do fly by…

In commemoration of this momentous anniversary, we’re kicking off an equally-momentous, utterly epic album reissue series of the Dead’s back catalog, one which involves two-disc deluxe editions and limited-edition picture disc versions of all the group’s studio and live albums. The original albums will have newly remastered sound, the second disc of each will contain unreleased recordings, and the 12” picture discs will contain that same newly-remastered audio. Mind you, it’ll be a limited-edition situation with the vinyl reissues, so if you don’t rush to get one of the 10,000 copies we’re producing, you’ll be out of luck.

In the case of THE GRATEFUL DEAD: 50th ANNIVERSARY DELUXE EDITION, the bonus disc features the band’s complete unreleased concert from July 29, 1966 and select cuts from July 30, 1966 at the P.N.E. Garden Auditorium in British Columbia. The band’s performances at the Vancouver Trips Festival are among only a handful of recordings that exist from the Dead’s first two years, so just know what a big deal this is.

Greenleaf – Echoes from a Mass (2021) [Official Digital Download 24bit/48kHz]

Greenleaf – Echoes from a Mass (2021)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/48 kHz | Time – 46:15 minutes | 574 MB | Genre: Rock
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Napalm Records Handels GmbH

Emerging in the wake of what might be considered the second wave of stoner-rock groups, Kyuss, Monster Magnet, Fu Manchu and so many others, Greenleaf are nonetheless veterans themselves. Sweden has long been a breeding ground for the genre, despite its roots in the California desert. After all, didn’t the Scandinavian country give us Spiritual Beggars and Dozer, with that guitarist, Tommi Holappa, branching off to form Greenleaf in 1999? The band’s eighth album fleshes out a discography turning more and more towards blues and rock, less sludgy than yesteryear. Marked by the isolation everyone has experienced to varying degrees during the pandemic that brought the world to its knees in 2020, the group delivers an album with a melancholy feel and song lines that are more melodic than ever, setting the tone from the start with the superb single Tides. Greenleaf have often drawn comparisons with Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age due to their reliance on softer, more measured vocals than bands who roll in a deeper, more aggressive register. Echoes From a Mass is nonetheless firmly entrenched in the tradition of albums powered by badass drumming, swathed in reverb and pushed back in the mix to avoid crushing the fuzz-soaked guitars (and bass), but never over-compressed, with room to breathe and maintaining that vintage flavour. That’s how this album earns its status as stoner rock and desert rock, as much as classic hard rock (the solo in Bury My Son). That lineage reaches all the way back to Black Sabbath, whose long, dark shadow hovers majestically over the magnificent 6-minute-plus Wings of Gold. While this highly-codified genre leaves little room for surprise, Echoes From a Mass manages the feat through a complete mastery of the basics. Admittedly, the recipe doesn’t change much (dirty yet melodic guitars, muscular sound with a reassuring shot of ’70s, reverb here and there for a touch of psychedelia…), but the palpable emotion and vocals that sometimes verge on a false note make the whole thing deeply human, even fragile. Those are the elements that make for great music. Taking responsibility for your choices and weaknesses without seeking perfection at all costs to maintain authenticity… mission accomplished, Greenleaf. – Chief Brody

“I’m drawing on the urgency of the moment,” reflects Grant-Lee Phillips. “The things that eat away in the late hours” That urgency inspired the headlong rush of Widdershins available February 23 via Yep Roc in which Grant-Lee Phillips invests the insight, nuance, and wit that has distinguished his songcraft over the past three decades in a riveting dissection of today’s fraught social landscape. Beneath the moment’s tumultuous veneer, Phillips uncovers resonances spanning centuries ‘patterns echoing from the present day to the distant past. Its twelve tracks were cut largely live in the studio with the sharp trio of Phillips (guitar, vocals, keyboards), Jerry Roe (drums), and Lex Price (bass) serving as messengers. Says Phillips, ‘This moment is explosive, volatile, and heightened. It’s important to me that the music reflect that… By turns sardonic, provocative, and illuminating, Widdershins (produced by Phillips and mixed by Tucker Martine) delivers its poetic truths through Phillips’s peerless melodic sensibilities, carefully balancing intensity and vulnerability. A now seasoned songwriter and performer, with more than two decades’ experience first as front man of the acclaimed Grant Lee Buffalo then as an accomplished solo artist, Phillips awakens comfort and hope by shining light into darker corners. ‘I hope to express my faith in people, my faith in the good ideas we’re capable of, and that regardless of what opposition we face, the fact that we can surmount these things,’ he concludes. ‘We can stare them down, laugh at them, belittle them, and drive the darkness back into a hole.’
