For In the Swarm, the avant-garde guitarist, banjoist and improviser Brandon Seabrook reunited with his trio mates Cooper-Moore and Gerald Cleaver, on diddley bow (a single-stringed American instrument characteristic of the Deep South) and drums, respectively, with whom he forms an incredibly rhythmic triangle. These experimenters have already made a few marks on contemporary jazz, and here, just like in the previous Exultations (Astral Spirits, 2020), they catch your ear with creative explosions and an unflinching experimentalism stretched to the brink of psychedelic rock, electronica, and avant-garde jazz.

Bob Marley & the Wailers came to London’s Rainbow Theatre in the summer of 1977. The Exodus album was riding the British charts. The band’s potent, magical music was everywhere; on the airwaves, the jukeboxes, the sound system, hi-fi’s. For the first time on recording, Live at the Rainbow captures a moment in time at the height of Bob Marley’s popularity with a digitally enhanced sound, remastered in dolby digital stereo.

After the success of 1974’s Natty Dread and 1976’s Rastaman Vibration, Bob Marley was not only the most successful reggae musician in the world, he was one of the most powerful men in Jamaica. Powerful enough, in fact, that he was shot by gunmen who broke into his home in December 1976, days before he was to play a massive free concert intended to ease tensions days before a contentious election for Jamaican Prime Minister. In the wake of the assassination attempt, Marley and his band left Jamaica and settled in London for two years, where he recorded 1977’s Exodus. Thematically, Exodus represented a subtle but significant shift for Marley; while he continued to speak out against political corruption and for freedom and equality for Third World people, his lyrics dealt less with specifics and more with generalities and the need for peace and love (though “So Much Things to Say,” “Guiltiness,” and “The Heathen” demonstrate the bullets had taken only so much sting out of Marley’s lyrics). And while songs like “Exodus” and “One Love/People Get Ready” were anthemic, they also had less to say than the more pointed material from Marley’s earlier albums. However, if Marley had become more wary in his point of view (and not without good cause), his skill as a songwriter was as strong as ever, and Exodus boasted more than a few classics, including the title song, “Three Little Birds,” “Waiting in Vain,” and “Turn Your Lights Down Low,” tunes that defined Marley’s gift for sounding laid-back and incisive at once. His gifts as a vocalist were near their peak on these sessions, bringing a broad range of emotional color to his performances, and this lineup of the Wailers – anchored by bassist Aston “Family Man” Barrett, drummer Carlton Barrett, and guitarist Julian “Junior” Murvin – is superb, effortlessly in the pocket throughout. Exodus was recorded at a time when Bob Marley was learning about the unexpected costs of international stardom, but it hadn’t yet sapped his creative strengths, and this is one of the finest albums in his stellar catalog.

Bill Fay has always sung about attempting to understand the most universal questions: those of nature, spirituality, humanity. His songs are “calming hymns for another chaotic time”, he says. His influence can be traced through many artist’s work, and so it only seemed right to celebrate this with a collection of newer voices interpreting his timeless tracks. Originally released in 2010 by David Tibet (Current 93), Still Some Light was released as a double CD, made up of 70’s album demos (Disc One) and 2009 home recordings (Disc Two). This year, for the first time, this collection of recordings will be pressed to vinyl and released digitally, presented alongside contemporary reimaginings of the tracks by Kevin Morby, Steve Gunn, Julia Jacklin and Mary Lattimore. Bill Fay’s words and melodies remain unaffected by the passing of time and changing trends; and here alongside the original recordings, these reinvented versions still calmly guide us through another moment of chaos.

When discussing the inexhaustible and gone-too-soon genius of pianist Bill Evans, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the mass of music released both before and after his tragic death in 1980. The easy equation is that the studio albums done during his lifetime are the blueprint and the continuing stream of live albums are improvised variations on that theme, probably aimed at and best appreciated by those already familiar with his studio work. Evans’ gifts were deep and many-faceted and fortunately he recorded often. Of all the late studio albums, the bittersweetly titled You Must Believe in Spring, is the undisputed gem. While the title of its predecessor We Will Meet Again directly presaged Evans’ coming demise, You Must Believe in Spring spoke to the pain the pianist was suffering over his brother Harry’s struggles with schizophrenia and the suicide of his longtime partner Ellaine Schultz. Evan opens with the slow and plaintive “B Minor Waltz (for Ellaine)” in which the mood varies from searching to resignation, yet his incredible, seemingly effortless technique keeps it from being overly sad and unlistenable. Melancholy is also the major emotion in a searching version of Michel Legrand’s title track (from the musical, The Young Girls of Rochefort) where Eddie Gomez’s muscular bass and Eliot Zigmund’s drumming, both firmly in a mind meld with Evans, eventually wind up the tempo before the tune finishes on a quiet note by Evans alone. Regarding the musicians’ synergy and fluidity, the album’s co-producer Tommy LiPuma remarked, “By pure chance, I caught that trio at the right time. They were locked in and it was perfection. It all gets down to the quality of the story being told by the musicians.” Notably this would be Gomez’s last recording with Evans. Recorded in 1977 at the famed Capitol Studios in Hollywood with the great engineer Al Schmitt, this pure and gorgeously balanced session closes with “Theme from M*A*S*H (Suicide is Painless).” Always willing to imbue popular hits with his special interpretative verve, Evans ends this lilting tune with serious undertones with a special playfulness. The three bonus tracks here, which first appeared on a now scarce 2003 reissue of the album, confirm LiPuma’s judgment of a trio with an unspoken unity: “Without a Song” lightly swings; a robust, very deliberate “Freddie Freeloader”—the only song on Kind of Blue that Evans did not play on—shows how much he might have contributed; and an upbeat, nearly unrecognizable, version of Cole Porter’s “All Of You” with a rapid fire Gomez solo add to this landmark album’s perfection.

The folk-pop duo of Helen Austin (Royston, BC, Canada) and Paul Otten (Sprinboro, OH, USA) came together as a Happy Accident. Their collaborations have earned a JUNO award, a John Lennon songwriting prize, and have been featured in numerous commercials, films and TV shows. Living thousands of kilometres apart, they were used to working remotely, but they had always enjoyed coming together to tour their multi-instrumental frenetic live shows. With those shows cancelled during the pandemic the duo pledged to release a single a month, not just to keep themselves sane, but also connected. This album is made up of those singles – songs of separation, songs of friendship and of love.

Less acoustic and intimate than the first album Folly Tales, released in 2018 on Another Record (FR) et Outré (UK), Dance until the crimes end shifts towards a capricious, fanciful and sophisticated pop, sometimes coloured with psychedelic folk. A songwriting infuenced by Anglo-Saxon music (Kate Bush, Robert Wyatt, Virginia Astley, Joni Mitchell), including lyrics which express a taste for English poetry.

“The story of Anna is a story of the last century. The life of a woman born as the youngest of five children to a jewish tailor and his young wife, who fled from the progromes in early 20th century Poland, aiming for New York but ending up in Copenhagen. Being the only girl in the family, she had to pass on the religious torch and was set to marry against her will. But before the marriage could take place the family once again had to flee, this time from the Nazis occupying Denmark. In the early days of October 1943 the family managed to escape to Sweden with nothing else than the clothes they wore and their hopes for a better life intact.
