Czechian Gustav Brom led one of the foremost European big bands of the 1960’s. This amazing Czechoslovakian band was rated among the top ten big bands in the world, playing festivals and concerts throughout Europe, India, and Cuba. Most of the pieces are by the band members, just one more reason why this was such a tight-knit group. Lypso swings with strong tenor and trumpet solos. On Dedicated to Eric a medium-tempo melody alternates with somber sustained chords and impressive baritone and trumpet solos. Trombones and drums start and end Contraband with a baritone-drum duet and bass solo packed in-between. Sumpf features the popular Czech singer Helena Blehárová, as she scats her way through this bluesy piece. Abas emits a bop feel and hard-swinging trumpet and sax solos. Henry Mancini’s Moon River, the only standard on the album, is given a hip treatment in ¾. The ballad Von Joseph has Gil Evans-like harmonies behind an introspective melody. Kater Peter leaps out with the trumpets leading the way. The jazz waltz Waldmächen once again features an impressive solo from Helena Blehárová. Eigenartige Verwandte mixes modernist harmonies with exemplary baritone trombone and solos. Taschkenter Nächte revolves around the reflective vibraphone solo – a fitting ending to this affirmation that jazz was alive and swinging behind the Iron Curtain.

Biffy Clyro will release the surprise new project ‘The Myth of the Happily Ever After‘ on October 22nd. The record is a homegrown project that represents a reaction to their UK #1 album ‘A Celebration of Endings’ and a rapid emotional response to the turmoil of the past year. It is the ying to the yang of ‘A Celebration’, the other-side-of-a-coin, a before-and-after comparison: their early optimism of 2020 having been brought back to earth with a resounding thud. It’s the product of a strange and cruel time in our lives, but one that ultimately reinvigorated Biffy Clyro.

BIFF BYFORD’S SCHOOL OF HARD KNOCKS DUE FEBRUARY 21ST 2020. Legendary Saxon frontman releases first solo album Free, tough, uncompromising and supremely obdurate, the English North is everything you saw in Game of Thrones and more. It is the true heart of England, the region where its soul resides, and Biff Byford has earned the right to be considered its true heavy metal bard. The legendary Saxon frontman takes on not just tales and stories from his heart and soil, but also investigates the Middle Ages and Medieval history overall in his first ever solo album. Recorded by Jacky Lehmann at Brighton Electric Studios and mixed by Matts Valentin at Queens Street Studio in Stockholm, the album was produced by Biff Byford, vocals, with Fredrik Akesson on guitars, Christian Lundqvist on drums and Gus Macricostas on bass guitar. The album also features guest appearances from Phil Campbell, Nick Baker, Alex Holzwart and Dave Kemp. In all senses a classic, masterfully-constructed old school British hard rock album School of Hard Knocks is every aural inch a Byford storybook highlighting his passionate interests. From the spoken word of “Inquisitor” leading into the metaltation on the Spanish Inquisition of “The Pit and Pendulum” to the autobiographical, old-school ‘wheels of steal’ era thrust of the title track, you’ll get to know Byford supremely well over the 11 tracks which comprise School of Hard Knocks. School of Hard Knocks is destined to be one of the biggest, most entertaining metal-plated surprises of 2020.

Bibio returns, just over a year on from his latest album Ribbons, with a new ten track EP titled Sleep On The Wing on Warp Records. The release follows a pattern Bibio has established in his work; releasing a follow up EP after an album exploring similar sonic ground. This release draws on a familiar range of influences from traditional folk, peaceful atmospheric soundscapes and field recordings from the natural world. Stephen Wilkinson (Bibio) once again demonstrates the breadth of his musicality, embracing a wide range of self-played instruments including the strings which gave Ribbons much of its flavour and features some new accouplements for good measure.

Bibi Tanga’s brand of Afro-Pop-Futurist-Funk is a melting pot of styles that bridge a musical gap between Africa and France. The son of a diplomat from Central African Republic, he moved to France at the age of ten and has lived in four different countries. His smart, slick and groovy blend of styles fuses together languages and cultures with socially conscious lyrics in English, French as well as Central African Republic’s official language, Sango. On his latest album, Now, Tanga has forged a new musical identity in which rhythms of his homeland are melded with English new wave and two-tone and particularly American funk to achieve a unique and uncategorisable sound.

Austrian Baroque music takes centre stage in the repertoire of this unusual Baroque ensemble. The music performed at the imperial court in Vienna at this time was initially heavily influenced by the music of Italy, later by that of France; Spanish court ceremonial also had important artistic effects in Vienna. The typical Austrian sound of this era was characterised by the impact of its many royal domains. The political and societal boundaries of Baroque Austria stretched much further than nowadays. Elements of Slavic, Hungarian and Alpine folk music styles had lasting effects on art music, making up its specific sound. The title “Sonatae tam aris quam aulis servientes” suggests that these works can be used for both sacred and secular purposes. They represent the first of several collections of pieces for polyphonic instrumental ensembles (published in 1676, 1680 and 1682) in which Biber demonstrated his mastery in handling the most important forms of instrumental music of his time.

Johann Kuhnau, Bach’s predecessor at Leipzig, composed biblical sonatas depicting stories – such as David and Goliath – in abstract, worldless, keyboard pieces. Biber’s Mystery Sonatas are quite different because they form part of a linked meditation on the life of Jesus and therefore present remarkable potential for the interpreter as a kind of ‘Evangelist’. Uniquely, these celebrated works employ fourteen different scordatura tunings where the altered intervals on the four strings create extraordinarily different ‘sound worlds’ to describe each event. Singers aside, performers are rarely presented with such heady subject matter to motivate their interpretations, apart from the usual movement titles indicating tempi, pulse and character.
Some pieces may have meaningful titles with a dedication, perhaps to another composer or friend, and we also come across specific instructions to ‘imitate’ various animals. For instance, Biber’s Battalia – a work which employs fashionable programmatic elements in the best traditions of a sonata rappresentativa) – portrays both the battle and the lament for the dead in a fashion which requires no further explanation. Likewise, in the case of C.P.E. Bach’s trio sonata Sanguineus and Melancholicus, a whole scene is described with meticulous and detailed instructions for expression, ranging from stubbornness and anger to laughter and ridicule, and even irony!
