Recorded in 1956 and 1957, All Or Nothing At All was one of Billie Holiday’s last releases before her death in 1959. A collection of jazz and pop standards by the Gershwins, Irving Berlin and Duke Ellington, among others, the album was produced by legendary producer Norman Granz. Holiday runs the emotional gamut from summery optimism (Love Is Here To Stay) to pathos-rich musings (Ill Wind) backed by a strong studio lineup of veterans including Red Mitchell on bass and Ben Webster on tenor saxophone.

For most of her life, the First Lady of Jazz offered the world a voice, the likes of which it will never hear again. Billie Holiday, whose inspiration was more instrumental than vocal, used to say that her aim was to get Bessie Smith’s feeling and Louis Armstrong’s style. She put her whole being into her singing, and leaving behind a legacy of superb vocal jazz recordings. The compelling tracks on this historic album were transferred from the original 78 rpm transcription master.

This compilation, gathered from recordings of her New York sessions in 1954, is an excellent sampler of the skills and charms of Lady Day. While the disc may appear to be just another throw-together of Holiday hits, with nothing in particular to distinguish it from the others, the arrangements, the performances and the recordings themselves are all wonderful. Backed by tight, laid-back session musicians (Oscar Peterson plays piano on many of the tracks–check out his solo on “Lover, Come Back to Me”), Holiday here enjoys the last full flush of her talents before health and substance abuse problems claimed her voice in the late ’50s.

In tracks like “He’s Funny That Way” and “Softly,” her raspy voice plays over melodies, caressing them, trailing off the end of phrases for emotional punctuation. Her tone is at once rich and wispy, managing simultaneously to convey vulnerability, despair, strength and sexuality. From the up-tempo swing of “Too Marvelous for Words” to the piano/vocal duo “I Thought About You, Recital is full of gems and a perfect album to put on at 3:00 in the morning.

The first popular jazz singer to move audiences with the intense, personal feeling of classic blues, Billie Holiday changed the art of American pop vocals forever. More than a half-century after her death, it’s difficult to believe that prior to her emergence, jazz and pop singers were tied to the Tin Pan Alley tradition and rarely personalized their songs; only blues singers like Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey actually gave the impression they had lived through what they were singing. Billie Holiday’s highly stylized reading of this blues tradition revolutionized traditional pop, ripping the decades-long tradition of song plugging in two by refusing to compromise her artistry for either the song or the band. She made clear her debts to Bessie Smith and Louis Armstrong (in her autobiography she admitted, “I always wanted Bessie’s big sound and Pops’ feeling”), but in truth her style was virtually her own, quite a shock in an age of interchangeable crooners and band singers.

In March 2016, British indie singer-songwriter Billy Bragg and his American counterpart Joe Henry boarded a Los Angeles-bound train at Chicago’s Union Station, guitars in hand, looking to reconnect with the culture of American railroad travel and the music it inspired. Winding along more than 2700 miles of track over four days, the pair recorded classic railroad songs in waiting rooms and at trackside while the train stopped to pick up passengers.

Billy Bragg has been the crown prince of pop (and country and “anti” folk) politics—though the Englishman would certainly hate the elitist leanings of that title—going on four decades. His 13th album has no shortage of sly, damning takes on politics; but it’s also full of beautiful life lessons. “Should have seen it coming but I didn’t understand/ That hubris is the enemy of best-laid plans,” he sings on the slow-Sunday-morning soul song “Should Have Seen It Coming,” imbued with warm Hammond as well as both pedal and lap steel. Written during the pandemic lockdown, it’s one of many songs that reference the personal instabilities triggered by isolation. “Good Days and Bad Days” leaps from its spare beginning to become a Carpenters-like piano and mellotron jaunt, with Bragg marveling, “Now I don’t know where things end or begin/ The day of the week or the state I’m in” before a Broadway-worthy chorus underscores the universality. (Later, on “Reflections on the Mirth of Creativity,” Bragg celebrates the simplest pleasures of 2020: birds singing, the sun shining and even the luck of timing traffic lights just right. It recalls the airy music-hall style of George Formby and his influence on the Beatles.) “Mid-Century Modern” sounds so bountiful as Bragg weighs the changing times. “The kids that pull the statues down, they challenge me to see/ The gap between the man and I am and the man I want to be,” he sings, delivering the killer line, “Freedom’s just another word for acting with impunity.” And he really digs into America. Fiddle-powered “Freedom Doesn’t Come for Free” is the cautionary tale of New Hampshire as Libertarian utopia. After they banned all rules and taxation, “No one came to mend the roads/ The street lights faded and the library closed/ And when the garbage overflowed/ Bears came sniffing around” Bragg playfully warns, “if you leave everything to laissez-faire/ You may have to wrassle with a bear.” Soulful “The Buck Doesn’t Stop Here No More” uses a slowed “Rhythm of the Rain” melody to poke at woolly U.S. politics. “Never trust a man who would be king … A nation born in revolution/ Should know this offers no solution,” Bragg sings, before turning his eye to insurrection. “With their God and their guns, what are they fighting for? An all-American sharia law?” Rollicking “Ten Mysterious Photos That Can’t Be Explained,”is a hilarious horror show (“I’ve been down rabbit holes, I’ve seen the rabid trolls/ Cackling in the twilight of the Age of Reason”) about the internet, which Bragg compares to “heroin for autodidacts” and warns, “You know that you can overdose on too much information?” He has said that “I Will Be Your Shield” is the “heart and soul of the album,” as “I’ve come to the conclusion that empathy is the currency of music.” It’s a gorgeous, dramatic piano ballad, and a true love song about the loyalty we can give family and friends. But it’s also like he’s assuring his audience: “When the world beyond your doorstep/ no longer makes much sense … I’ll come to your defense,” he sings. “When … pain stops you from functioning/ Trust in me to care.” – Shelly Ridenour

“Bridges Not Walls” features all of the singles he has released over the summer plus two other gems that stand shoulder to shoulder with every song Billy has written in his 30 year career on the frontline. “Bridges Not Walls” sees Billy Bragg doing what he does best, writing heartfelt and gloriously moving songs confronting the issues of the day. He plugs in his buzzsaw guitar and puts Trumpism to the sword on ‘The Sleep Of Reason’ (Produces Monsters) and his cover of Anais Mitchell’s ‘Why We Build The Wall’; he puts his own spin on Oscar Wilde’s ‘the price of everything and the value of nothing’ on the bucolic folk of ‘Not Everything That Counts Can Be Counted’, while the elegant piano ballad ‘Full English Brexit’ nails the attitudes of an all too familiar ageing Little Englander; he confronts the climate change deniers on the country shuffle of ‘King Tide And The Sunny Day Flood’ and celebrates the heroic stand taken by Saffiyah Khan who smiled in the face of right wing thugs at an anti-immigrant demonstration on ‘Saffiyah Smiles’. Always engaged, never predictable, Billy Bragg continues to fight the good fight.

Billie Marten once said her youth was “the worst thing” about her. Society’s obsession with age, especially in the context of art, can be something of a poisoned chalice. Early articles about the singer-songwriter focused her supposedly ‘precocious’ talent, and in a statement accompanying this album, she speaks about having previously concealed herself in her music and being “obsessed with what people thought of me”. Confidence and clarity has come with age – and with it her biggest, boldest music.

Bille Marten, one of Britain’s most promising young voices, releases her new album: Feeding Seahorses by Hand. It comes a few years after her debut Writing Of Blues and Yellows; a time which has seen her complete her secondary school studies, including GCSEs and A-Levels, on top of travelling and creating the new record. It’s no surprise that she has maturity beyond her years. Feeding Seahorses By Hand takes a magnifying glass to the outside world, giving a fictional appraisal of Donald Trump from the perspective of his daughter on the saccharine Cartoon People, and poking fun at unnamed politicians on Betsy.

Foreverly is an unforgettable collection inspired by Songs Our Daddy Taught Us, an album of traditional Americana songs reinterpreted, recorded and released by The Everly Brothers in 1958. The album captures the beauty of the Everly’s stunning close harmonies to create a moving and powerful testament to these traditional ballads. The collaboration between Green Day front man and Grammy Award winning artist Billie Joe Armstrong and Grammy Award winning singer and songwriter Norah Jones began ten years ago when they both performed with Stevie Wonder and his band at the Grammys.

The ‘No Fun Mondays’ covers series launched in March 2020 on Green Day’s YouTube channel. Like many musicians, Armstrong expected to spend much of 2020 on the road, touring in support of the band’s chart-topping February album, ‘Father of All.’ However, once the COVID-19 pandemic forced him to put those plans on pause, Armstrong got busy with a different kind of work. ‘No Fun Mondays’ sees Armstrong putting his signature melodic-punk spin on the songs that have formed the soundtrack to his life, including classics by John Lennon, Billy Bragg, and Johnny Thunders.

It follows her debut studio album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? (2019). Eilish has cited self-reflection as the biggest muse behind the record, with lyrical themes including emotional abuse, power struggles, and mistrust, among others.

Five singles preceded the album: “My Future”, “Therefore I Am”, “Your Power”, “Lost Cause”, and “NDA”, all of which charted in the top 40 of the US Billboard Hot 100. To promote the album, a Disney+ documentary concert film, Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles, will be released on September 3, 2021. Eilish will also embark on Happier Than Ever the World Tour in 2022. Before its release, Happier Than Ever became the most pre-added album in Apple Music history.
