The two eldest children of the music-loving banker Abraham Mendelssohn and his wife Lea were highly musical: Fanny, born in late 1805, and her brother Felix, who was three and a half years her junior. The lucky children enjoyed a carefree youth, in which music played a central role. While Felix became a famous composer and conductor, Fanny, according to the dictates of the time, had to subordinate her own composing talents to a role as wife and mother. The musical compositions of this highly-regarded concert pianist only received more attention from the 1970s onwards, when they were re-edited, and have since appeared more frequently in concert programmes. In his new audio biography, Jörg Handstein tells the life stories of these two important creative artists of the early 19th century, both of whom died far too early in 1847 (Felix was only 38 and Fanny only 41 years old). The audio biography is duly entitled: “Two lives devoted to music”. Linking the well-known phases in the life and compositions of Felix with those of his elder sister Fanny opens up different and entirely new insights into the musical history of those times. This detailed audio biography, elaborated as usual on the basis of original sources and accompanied by numerous impressive musical examples, is dedicated to the life stories of both siblings, and combines exciting and lively narration with inspired musicianship. Some of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s early works have been included as bonus tracks: the String Symphonies Nos. 8 and 12 that he composed at the age of 13 and 14 respectively. They were written in 1822/23 for concerts at Mendelssohn’s parental home in Berlin, where he himself rehearsed and directed them. The Symphoniesatz in C minor, a single movement that he completed on December 29, 1823, also numbers among his early string symphonies. These works by the young Mendelssohn are complemented by his choral cantata Verleih uns Frieden gnädiglich (1831), which is based on the text of the traditional Lutheran chorale.

Ewa Fabianska-Jelinskais one of the most active and recognized composers of her generation. Her oeuvre is regularly presented at national and international music festivals and appreciated by music authorities, which is confirmed by numerous awards she has received in prestigious composers’ competitions. The creative output of Fabia’nska-Jeli’nska, despite her young age, includes over a hundred compositions (excluding incidental music and arrangements), written for diverse ensembles, and is constantly expanding. In her work, we can find pieces representing various genres, including songs, solo concertos, symphonic works, while nearly half of them are written for one to four instruments. The present album features compositions created in the years 2015-2019, most of which represent a sui generis specialization of Fabia’nska-Jeli’nska in the genre of instrumental chamber music, including instrumental duos and quartets. The album is complemented with four songs for solo instruments. Together, the compositions constitute a showcase of Fabia’nska-Jeli’nska’s musical language; it’s indicators include high formal discipline and attention to material coherence, important role of tone color and melody in shaping expression, often marked by the presence of lyrical element, and frequent use of viola and trombone.

La musique a toujours pris une place importante chez Raymond Devos, dans ses spectacles déjà mais surtout dans la construction de ses sketches et plus encore dans son phrasé qui n’est pas sans rappeler celui du slam ou du hip hop. C’est de ce constat qu’est née l’idée de ce projet. Pour illustrer ce propos 8 sketchs interprétés par Devos ont été mis en musique alors que différents interprètes ont réadapté certains de ces sketchs en chansons : François Morel, Mc Jean Gab1, Boris Bergman.

Richard Desjardins est l’un des artistes les plus pertinents, poétiques et forts que le Québec ait connu dans les derniers 50 ans. Un auteur-compositeur-interprète qu’on place dans une catégorie sélecte qui compte de très rares membres dont on pourrait nommer André « Dédé » Fortin. S’attaquer aux chansons de Desjardins, c’est s’attaquer à un monument. Et pour se frotter à des monuments, il faut avoir la couenne solide et surtout, il faut avoir de quoi à dire artistiquement avec les chansons. Desjardins propose onze nouvelles versions de chansons interprétées par une belle brochette d’artiste. Certains nous offrent des relectures qui méritent de faire le détour. À l’opposé, on se rend compte aussi que du Desjardins, ça ne se chante pas n’importe comment. La charge émotive que l’homme engagé sait injecter à un texte n’est pas anodine ni facile à réinterpréter. / Richard Desjardins is one of the artists most relevant, poetic and strong that Quebec has known in the last 50 years. An author-composer-interpreter that we place in a category, select that account, very few members of which we could appoint André “Dédé” Fortin. Tackle the songs of Desjardins group, is to attack a monument. And to rub to some of the monuments, it is necessary to have the rind robust, and most importantly, it must have something to say artistically with the songs. Desjardins offers eleven new versions of songs performed by a bunch of artist. Some offer us readings that deserve to make the detour. On the contrary, one realizes also that of Desjardins, it does not sing no matter how. The emotional charge that the man involved knows how to inject a text is not a trivial nor easy to interpret.
