Essentially, Supergrass’ eponymous third album is a refined, subdued extension of In It for the Money. Where that album was a supremely confident, head-spinning musical kaleidoscope, splendidly shifting focus from track to track, Supergrass is down to earth, mellow, and unassuming. Part of the trio’s charm has always been that they’re unabashedly unpretentious, since their casual attitude made their considerable musical skill all the more impressive. On Supergrass, that casualness occasionally crosses the line into laziness. It doesn’t happen all that often, but there are moments on the album that feel tossed-off, such as “What Went Wrong (In Your Head)” and “Beautiful People.” This is particularly evident because these also-rans are surrounded by songs that are as great as anything Supergrass has ever recorded – the harpsichord-driven, pulsing “Your Love”; the stately, sophisticated “Shotover Hill”; the gleeful absurdity of “Jesus Came From Outta Space”; or the breezy, infectious summer single “Pumping on Your Stereo.” The disparity in material also hammers home the point that Supergrass doesn’t quite gel, the way their first two albums did. There were no themes behind those two records, but the performances and songs shared a similar spirit. The third album is simply a collection of moments, some spectacular and some average. While that may come as a slight disappointment, since I Should Coco and In It for the Money are two of the greatest pop albums of the ’90s, the songs that work on Supergrass – and they do account for well over half the record – confirm that the ‘Grass remain one of the most gifted.

At roughly half an hour’s running time, the return of Elizabeth Fraser is an EP with all the heft of an album. Fraser’s gaseous soprano arrived fully formed in the 80s as part of the Cocteau Twins. Since then, she has lent her instantly recognisable instrument most famously to Massive Attack – her partner in life as well as in Sun’s Signature, Damon Reece, played drums for them – but hasn’t released a body of work of her own.

Suede return with their ninth studio album Autofiction, set for release on 16th September 2022 via BMG.

As Suede began work on the songs that would become Autofiction, they decided to go back to basics. In a move that recalled their most formative days, Brett Anderson, Mat Osman, Simon Gilbert, Richard Oakes and Neil Codling schlepped to a rehearsal studio in deserted Kings Cross to collect a key, hump their own gear, set up and start playing.

Speaking about Autofiction, Brett Anderson said: “Autofiction is our punk record. No whistles and bells. Just the five of us in a room with all the glitches and fuck-ups revealed; the band themselves exposed in all their primal mess.”

First single ‘She Still Leads Me On’ is the track that reconfigured what the album could be. A beautiful song written from Brett to his late mother. As its title suggests, Autofiction is one of Anderson’s most personal records yet. Reflecting on the process of writing acclaimed works of memoir Coal Black Mornings and Afternoons With The Blinds Drawn helped Brett get a newfound perspective on himself as a performer and singer in the public eye, much of which has bled into the lyricism of Autofiction.

Born out of a great orchestral tradition, the Streichquartett der Staatskapelle Berlin began its life in 2017, on the judicious advice of Daniel Barenboim. Since then the four string section leaders of the famed Staatskapelle Berlin have been performing on many of the world’s most famous stages. Building on its familiarity with the world of opera, the quartet’s first album highlights three operatic heavyweights. Verdi’s string quartet, his only surviving chamber music work, was composed in 1873 while the composer was at the height of his creative powers. Although written in a matter of weeks, it is a piece replete with beautiful melodies and idiomatic writing. Composed two years earlier, Tchaikovsky’s first string quartet harks back to Schubert and Beethoven and embraces their ideals of beauty and perfect form. Taking its inspiration from the chrysanthemum flowers associated with Italian funeral ceremonies, Puccini’s Crisantemi , dedicated to the memory of Amadeo I of Spain, completes the trio of works.

Steven Bernstein first saw the late, great New Orleans pianist Henry Butler play in 1984. “He was genius-level brilliant, man,” he says, still marveling. “I couldn’t believe there was a guy who could sound like the most ancient music and the most futuristic music at the same time.” Fourteen years later, Bernstein took Hal Willner’s recommendation and hired Butler to play in the touring band that played the score for Robert Altman’s film Kansas City. In 2013, the two musicians formed the Hot 9, the name a tip of the fedora to Louis Armstrong’s landmark Hot Five and Hot Seven sessions of the 1920s. They released the acclaimed Viper’s Drag album the following year, and toured until Butler’s untimely passing in 2018.

“Where are you going to get original arrangements of the Grateful Dead, Eddie Harris, The Beatles, Bessie Smith, Ellington, and Charles Mingus, and not played as novelties but, like, this is our music?” Bernstein asks. Popular Culture, that’s where. It’s what the Millennial Territory Orchestra (MTO) has done brilliantly for 20 years: playing Bernstein’s arrangements of the American Songbook, but reimagining that tradition in their own image. “I’ve always been into the idea of popular culture: what do we all connect with? What brings us together?” Bernstein adds. “Also, I just like the music.”

What Remains is a dynamic confluence of sonic worlds — four interconnected passages that venture from analog-sequencer driven elegant futurism, to yearning and mysterious tribal ambient, to conclude with the heart-wrenching, pure-atmospherics of the title track. There’s an odyssey-like quality at work here, a revealing culmination of the different electronic musics Roach has developed and explored over the last forty years.

Deep emotion, soulful longing and vast interweaves of sonic epiphanies of grace and beauty are immersed and nourished in a balance of darkness and light. The four distinct — yet allied — movements progress as one stylist space opens to the next, each emerging from the resonance of the previous piece.

Xaybu: The Unseen is the highly-anticipated sophomore release from Sélébéyone, the international avant-rap collective comprised of MCs HPrizm (New York City) and Gaston Bandimic (Dakar), and saxophonists Steve Lehman (Los Angeles) and Maciek Lasserre (Paris). Described as “legitimately new” and a “revelation” by Pitchfork, the group’s eponymous 2016 debut was hailed as a game-changing synthesis of underground hip-hop, modern jazz and live electronic music. On Xaybu, Sélébéyone – which means “intersection” in Wolof – continues to build on its groundbreaking work with shifting rhythms and state-of-the art sound design, now with a newfound sense of effortless fluidity. The result is a profound musical statement that deftly explores spirituality and mysticism through the lens of experimental music.
