For Camiel Boomsma, discovering the music by Dutch composer Gerhard (and his son Karel) Hamm was really a game of fate. After a recital, Carl Hamm, who is a direct descendant, gave him a stack of scores. While playing through the pieces at home Boomsma was struck by their delicacy and narrative power. Gerhard Hamm belongs in a way to the musical family of Robert Schumann. He writes little poetic reflections on grand Romantic gestures. In these small musical poems a whole world lies hidden. Sometimes powerful and proud, sometimes vulnerable and reflective. Romantic expression beautiful in itself. In his Gefunden: 6 Clavierstücke in Liedform, Op. 18, Gerhard Hamm’s musical gift as a composer is beautifully displayed. Hamm’s craftsmanship is excellent but he never neglects poetic expression.

Spanish music is the focus of “Tapeo”, a new recording by cellist Cameron Crozman and pianist Philip Chiu. Works by Gaspar Cassadó, Manuel de Falla, Joaquin Turina are performed on “El Tiburon,” a circa 1769 Spanish cello attributed to Joannes Guillami, and generously loaned by the Instrument Bank of the Canada Council for the Arts. “I fell in love with Spain the moment I first stepped into a tapas bar in the middle of Barcelona”, says Crozman. “Each of the short pieces on this album was chosen for its own unique flavor and will give you a musical taste of Spain’s incredibly diverse and rich culture. And just as Spanish food would be unthinkable without the tomatoes and potatoes of the New World, so too it felt like an album of Spanish music would be incomplete without a couple gems from Hispanic America”.

It’s not just any instrument on which the ‘bad boy of the organ’ Cameron Carpenter plays this selection of works by Bach: it is a custom-built instrument made to his exact specifications by the company Marshall & Ogletree. Supposedly “portable” – you still need some large trucks to carry everything – the console itself weighs no less than a ton.
