Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Digital Booklet, Front Cover | © Reference Recordings
Reference Recordings is proud to present a first album with the Carnegie Mellon Wind Ensemble, conducted by George Vosburgh. Unusual and underperformed repertoire has long been a hallmark of this ensemble’s programming. This album exemplifies that, with the pairing of Strauss’ 1945 Symphony for Winds in E-flat major (“The Happy Workshop”) and his 1881 Serenade for Winds in E-flat major, Op. 7. Amanda Vosburgh states: “Taken together, the Serenade Op. 7 and the “Happy Workshop” form the bookends to a long and diverse body of work, marked by innovative chromaticism and complexity, but tethered at either end to the classical tradition”.

Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Edwin Outwater, Mason Bates – Philharmonia Fantastique: The Making of the Orchestra (2022)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/48 kHz | Time – 22:58 minutes | 256 MB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Digital Booklet, Front Cover | © Sony Classical
Inspired by a desire to offer my own kids a fresh guide to the orchestra, Philharmonia Fantastique was created to showcase both the artistic and technical wonders of the medium. Like its predecessors Peter & the Wolf and Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, it colorfully presents the instruments of the orchestra in the medium of a film soundtrack. Philharmonia Fantastique uses both musical genre and electronic sounds for characterization: noir-ish jazz for the woodwinds; bending lyricism in the strings; dark techno for the brass; drum-corps in the percussion; and, for our Sprite protagonist, a simple yet harmonically wandering piano melody.

Carolyn Sampson, Kristian Bezuidenhout – Trennung: Songs of Separation (2022)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192 kHz | Time – 01:12:36 minutes | 2,71 GB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Digital Booklet, Front Cover | © BIS
This is a well conceived album that has clearly been subject to a thorough editorial process. Not content with having recorded over 100 vocal pieces, soprano Carolyn Sampson is stepping away from her global limelight to join Kristian Bezuidenhout (an inconspicuous pianofortist who is nevertheless still very active in terms of recordings and concerts, whether as a soloist or with best early music ensembles of the moment). Together, they’ve created an incredibly original programme based on separation and departure songs from the 18th century, a time period when a loved one’s absence could last for a long time, if not forever. This album has provided the perfect opportunity for these two curious minds to discover delightful, unknown pieces written by gifted composers who’ve remained hidden in the folds of time. They’re the perfect accompaniment to the safe and timeless works of Mozart and Haydn.

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Universal Music Division Virgin Records Distribution Deal
To say the French synthwave crossover artist has somewhat of an established aesthetic would be a touch of an understatement. Pretty much from the inception, Carpenter Brut – the musical project of Franck Hueso – has built a career of romanticising the excess, glamour and filth of outsider 80’s pop culture, with references to sleazy glam metal, slasher horror and everything that made the time period fun being rife within his work, both live and on record.

Cypress Hill – Back in Black (2022)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/48 kHz | Time – 32:29 minutes | 437 MB | Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © BMG Rights Management GmbH
Cypress Hill shifts culture. Since releasing its eponymous debut album in 1991, the California rap group has regularly revolutionized rap. B-Real and Sen Dog’s innovative lyrics, distinctive voices and poignant street-centered subject matter catapulted the group to superstar status. Its first LP sold more than 2 million units and its second album, 1993’s Black Sunday, pushed another 3 million units thanks to the Grammy-nominated singles “Insane In The Brain” and “I Ain’t Goin’ Out Like That”. Along the way, Cypress Hill earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, sold more than 9 million albums, and were nominated for three Grammy Awards. During a time increasingly defined by singles of the moment, rappers B-Real and Sen Dog wanted to make a statement by releasing an album. Back in Black, the group’s tenth studio project, finds the group flexing its musical muscles and pushing itself creatively. With a mesmerizing mix of celebratory, confrontational, inspirational, reflective, and rugged songs, Cypress Hill shines throughout Back in Black. Entirely produced by Black Milk (Slum Village, Lloyd Banks, Pharoahe Monch), the LP is an homage to Cypress Hill’s return and its collaboration with Black Milk.

America has been a unique place of refuge and safety for Jews from around the world for hundreds of years. It has not always been the perfect “Goldene Medine” (Golden Land) of immigrant lore. But, in no other place in history have Jewish communities been able to thrive as they have in the United States. An immigrant people in an immigrant land, most American-Jewish families can trace their ancestors’ arrivals at Ellis Island or other ports of entry to the early 20th century.

Christophe Rousset – Le Manuscrit de Madame Théobon (2021)

This manuscript, from Christophe Rousset’s private collection, was discovered by him in 2004. Property of Madame de Théobon, one of Louis XIV’s mistresses, it contains not only the essential French harpsichord pieces of the late seventeenth century, but also many transcriptions of compositions by Lully and several hitherto completely unknown works. Providing precious insight into the musical practices of that time, these pieces are recorded here for the first time. With its powerful sound, the Nicolas Dumont harpsichord of 1704 does them full justice.

Even in his prime, Chuck Berry in concert was something of a buyer-beware proposition. Pickup bands, inconsistent performances, a sometimes surly disposition did not always guarantee the “Rock and Roll Music” would be as great as it could, and should, be.

Cat Power – Covers (2022)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 43:21 minutes | 757 MB | Genre: Indie Rock
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Domino Recording Co
There’s nothing in the world like a Cat Power cover version. The artist also known as Chan Marshall made herself known as one of the 21st century’s finest interpreters of other artists’ material – her re-imaginings as emotionally devastating as they are decidedly dreamlike – at the very beginning of the millennium.
On 2000’s ‘The Covers Record’, she found new elegance in trad-rock and butch blues – from the Rolling Stones’ ‘Satisfaction’ to The Velvet Underground’s ‘I Found A Reason’ – before doubling down on 2008’s ‘Jukebox’, which made woozy inroads into country and folk with torchy and twinkling takes on classics by Hank Williams, Joni Mitchell and country blues legend Jessie Mae Hemphill.
Initially an answer to a time in Marshall’s life when she felt more at ease singing other people’s songs than her own, her cover versions now possess a strength all of their own, with the self-produced ‘Covers’ setting itself apart from its predecessors by veering into the modern mainstream. Here material by Frank Ocean (‘Bad Religion’) and Lana Del Rey (‘White Mustang’) appears alongside the more long-established likes of Nick Cave (‘I Had A Dream, Joe’), Jackson Browne (‘These Days’) and The Pogues (‘A Pair of Brown Eyes’). Marshall has carefully selected each song to reflect a personal memory.
A tender, sparse take on Billie Holiday’s ‘I’ll Be Seeing You’ was a favourite of her grandmother’s and a mournful, piano-led, rendering of The Replacements’ ‘Here Comes a Regular’ reminds Marshall of spending her final dollar to play the song on a New York City jukebox. Sadness is an art, and here Cat Power does it exceptionally well.
