Won’t You Come and Sing for Me? is the second album by Hazel Dickens and Alice Gerrard. Their hard-driving style and soaring harmonies broke the glass ceiling of male-dominated bluegrass in the 1960s. Hazel and Alice inspired generations of women in bluegrass and beyond. Their influence has been acknowledged by artists as diverse as country superstars Naomi and Wynonna Judd, champion flat-picker Molly Tuttle, and proto-feminist punk rocker Kathleen Hanna. This landmark record includes blazing takes on songs penned by the Stanley Brothers and the Louvin Brothers as well as timeless older works by the Delmore Brothers and the Carter Family. It concludes with “The One I Love Is Gone,” a haunting and poignant piece written (but not recorded) by the father of bluegrass Bill Monroe, who personally sang it for Hazel and Alice. The album’s title song, written by Hazel, has become a widely recorded bluegrass classic.

As one of the finest pianists of his era and an improviser of genius, Ludwig van Beethoven’s preferred vehicle for musical exploration was the piano. With his five piano concertos composed between 1788 and 1809, he not only achieved a brilliant conclusion to the Classical piano concerto, but also established a new model for the Romantic era: a sort of symphony with obbligato piano which was to remain a reference point well into the twentieth century.

After Bach’s Goldberg Variations, which won him worldwide honours (including a “Diapason d’Or”), Hannes Minnaar challenges and confronts what has become a “classic” of the 20th century repertoire: Shostakovich’s Preludes and Fugues, composed in 1951. Here again, the qualities of his pianism, for which he is recognised as one of the leading musicians of our time, come under the spotlight: the diversity of touch and the suppleness between tension and tranquillity to characterise every Prelude and Fugue, the precision of tone, the lack of any affectation, a natural finesse in phrasing and articulation, and a familiarity with the score going hand in hand with a freshness that conjures a sense of improvisation. Here we encounter a new landmark in the crowded field of interpretations of this wonderful music.

Although his is a rather less charming sound than that of a John Coltrane or a Sonny Rollins, Hank Mobley is still a master of the tenor saxophone. The famous critic Leonard Feathers, the author of many album liner notes, would describe him “the middleweight champion of tenor sax”. With daring solos, often of pleasing complexity, this Georgian who grew up in New Jersey was one of the great standard bearers for that unique hard bop that rang out on several Blue Note albums in the 50s and 60s. It was on this famous label that Mobley, a marathon runner of the recording studio, put out thirty records or more. On this record in particular, the then-27-year-old jazzman is accompanied by Bill Hardman on the trumpet, Curtis Porter on the saxophone, Sonny Clark on the piano, Paul Chambers on double bass, and Art Taylor on drums. A flawless session (as were almost all the Blue Note productions of that era), recorded in a single day (23 June 1957) throughout which Hank Mobley (one year on from leaving the Jazz Messengers, which he had founded with Horace Silver and Art Blakey) carefully ensures that his former bandmates stay focussed on a soothing swing. Across the following decade, with masterpieces like Soul Station (1960), Workout (1961), No Room For Squares (1963) and The Turnaround! (1965), Mobley took another step with an even more original and unique style and sidemen of quite a different calibre (Lee Morgan, Donald Byrd, Andrew Hill, Herbie Hancock, Philly Joe Jones). While we wait for more, this eponymous Hank Mobley and its superb sleeve make for a fine rediscovery. – Marc Zisman

If we were to travel four centuries back in time, when strolling through Prague streets we would most likely hear from many a house, palace or church some engrossing and catchy songs by Adam Václav Michna, one of the greatest Czech Baroque poets. His Christmas songs have become widely known and highly popular. Lesser known is Michna’s Czech Marian Music, drawing the listener into the world of poetic hymns praising the Virgin Mary, which formed a significant part of 17th-century Czech music.

Home For Christmas is the eighteenth (and most recent as of 2022) studio album by Hall & Oates, and their first full-length album of Christmas music. It was released in the US on October 3, 2006. A portion of the proceeds of the sale of this album goes to Toys for Tots. It was only available at Trans World Entertainment music stores in 2006, but has since become available at all retail outlets.

Previously, the duo released a promotional only single called “Jingle Bell Rock” in the early 1980s that had each of them separately singing the lead vocals on either side of the 45. The version of “Jingle Bell Rock” on this album is different from those two versions.[citation needed

It includes a version of “It Came Upon A Midnight Clear”, which became their second number one Adult Contemporary hit.

Composer Guillaume Roussel has written the original music for the film Couleurs de l’incendie directed by and featuring Clovis Cornillac with co-stars Léa Drucker, Benoît Poelvoorde, Alice Isaaz and Olivier Gourmet. The film is based on the novel by Pierre Lemaitre, who received the Prix Goncourt for his book Au revoir là-haut. The movie adaptation of the latter by Albert Dupontel in 2017 (See You Up There) was a huge success and won several Césars. In Couleurs de l’Incendie, Fanny Ardant plays the role of a heroic opera singer; her singing voice in the film is that of the soprano Sandrine Piau. In addition to the music by Guillaume Roussel (who, among other things, wrote the soundtrack for Cédric Jimenez’s film Bac Nord), we hear Verdi, Saint-Saëns and other classics from the French repertoire, including Plaisir d’amour.

Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra & Thord Svedlund – Weinberg: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 7 (2010/2022) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

Thord Svedlund has previously made three recordings of the orchestral music of Mieczyslaw Weinberg. First was his 1998 recording of the Polish-Russian modernist’s First and Fourth chamber symphonies issued first on Olympia and later on Alto, then his 1999 version of the Second Symphony and Second Chamber Symphony, likewise issued on Olympia and then Alto, then his 2005 recording of four of Weinberg’s concertos issued by Chandos. Now, Svedlund at last gets his crack at two full-fledged symphonies, No. 1 and No. 7, with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra on Chandos, and the results are stunning. Weinberg’s First has had only one previous recording, by Alexander Titov and the St. Petersburg State Academic Symphony, and while it is more than serviceable, it cannot compare with this account. Written in 1942 and dedicated to the Red Army, the First is the smoothest and by far the most sincere pastiche of Shostakovich and Prokofiev’s styles imaginable, and if it does not quite touch the depths of Shostakovich’s Seventh or Eighth, or Prokofiev’s Fifth or Sixth, it comes closer than any other Russian modernist symphony. The competition is tougher in the Seventh because its only other recorded performance was made by its dedicatee, Rudolf Barshai, and it is hard to top the gritty integrity of his 1967 recording. Conducting with rare sensitivity, Svedlund comes very close, with committed playing from the Gothenburg musicians. Chandos’ clear, colorful, and immediate sound beats the heck out of Barshai’s cold, gray Soviet-era sound. Fans of Shostakovich and Prokofiev owe it to themselves to try this disc.
