Station to Station is the 10th studio album by English musician David Bowie, released on 23 January 1976 by RCA Records. Commonly regarded as one of his most significant works, Station to Station was the vehicle for his performance persona, the Thin White Duke. Co-produced by Bowie and Harry Maslin, the album was recorded at Cherokee Studios in Los Angeles, California, in the latter half of 1975 after he completed shooting Nicolas Roeg’s The Man Who Fell to Earth; the cover artwork featured a still from the film. During the sessions, Bowie was heavily dependent on drugs, especially cocaine, and later claimed that he recalled almost nothing of the production.

The second of two inessential double live albums David Bowie released in the ’70s, 1978’s Stage is a different beast than its 1974 predecessor, David Live. That album captured Bowie in a transitional phase, sliding from glam to stylized soul, while Stage was recorded in the thick of his Berlin phase with producer/collaborator Brian Eno, and Stage is an attempt to translate that sleek, angular, arty studio-bound sound to the live arena. This means not only are Low and Heroes given live treatments, but about half of both Ziggy Stardust and Station to Station are given new arrangements here. On these older tunes, the new flair – the synthesizers and Adrian Belew’s tangled, mathematical guitar – doesn’t sound sleek, it sounds chintzy and cheap, not quite fully formed. The newer songs suffer from this, too, and that’s because the performances are too direct and the recording is too crisp and clear, removing the dark, foreboding mystery and assuredness that made Low and Heroes thrilling, compelling listens. Consequently, Stage winds up as a curiosity, and not a very interesting one at that.

50th anniversary edition of Bowie’s seminal album featuring a brand new mix by original producer Tony Visconti. Originally released 14th November 1969, the sophomore effort from Bowie was a big turning point from his 1967 debut. The album most famously introduces the character of Major Tom in Space Oddity which would go on to be one of his most enduring classics. The new mix of the album now features the title track of the boxset Conversation Piece restored to the track listing in its initially intended position before it was originally dropped due to time constraints of vinyl.

Originally released as part of the comprehensive 2018 box set Loving the Alien, Serious Moonlight (Live ’83) is an audio release of the 1984 home video release Serious Moonlight, which itself aired earlier on the cable network HBO. In any incarnation, Serious Moonlight captures Bowie at the peak of his coolly calculated superstardom, streamlining his eccentricities so they are slick yet still a bit strange. It ain’t rock & roll, it’s entertainment, but that’s also the charm of the record: it’s big and glitzy, with Bowie acting justifiably proud of his grandiose moves but also performing with a sly, knowing wink. – Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps), also known simply as Scary Monsters,[a] is the 14th studio album by English musician David Bowie, released on 12 September 1980 by RCA Records. Over the past three years, Bowie garnered massive artistic success with the “Berlin Trilogy”, which consisted of Low, “Heroes” and Lodger (1977–1979). However, the trilogy had proven less successful commercially. By 1980, numerous artists Bowie had inspired with the trilogy were out-performing him commercially, leading him to desire a more commercial sound for his next record.

Newly remastered of the 1987 album. The seeds of this new reimagining of the albums were first sown in 2008 when David asked Mario McNulty to remix the track ‘Time Will Crawl’ and record new drums by longtime Bowie drummer, Sterling Campbell along with strings. The track was issued on the iSelect compilation to much acclaim, and in the notes, for that record, David remarked ‘Oh, to redo the rest of that album’.

Fast-forward to early 2018 McNulty entered Electric Lady Studios in New York with Sterling, Tim Lefebvre on bass, who was in the ★ (“Blackstar”) band and Reeves Gabrels and David Torn on guitars. All of the musicians had a history with David, so were a perfect fit for what now sound like brand new songs. Nico Muhly, whom Mario first met when they were both interns working for Philip Glass in 2001, has handled the string arrangements.

“Sula vie dilejo. Solo vie milejo!”Warsaw, April 1976. The little cozy train from Zurich to Moscow stops for a while in the even more inhospitable capital of socialist Poland. A well-known Londoner with his buddy Iggy Pop walks deeply impressed through a city full of bomb craters, bullet holes and coal smog. A trip in the middle of the”low” sessions, which should be worthwhile. Meanwhile, the other buddy Brian Eno sat alone at home and devised the basic melody of “Warszawa”.

“Lodger” is the 13th studio album by English singer-songwriter David Bowie, the last of the Berlin Trilogy. It was recorded in Switzerland and New York City with collaborator Brian Eno and producer Tony Visconti. Unlike Bowie’s previous two albums, Lodger contained no instrumentals and a somewhat more pop-oriented style while experimenting with elements of world music and recording techniques inspired by Eno’s Oblique Strategies cards.

After summing up his maverick tendencies on Scary Monsters, David Bowie aimed for the mainstream with Let’s Dance. Hiring Chic guitarist Nile Rodgers as a co-producer, Bowie created a stylish, synthesized post-disco dance music that was equally informed by classic soul and the emerging new romantic subgenre of new wave, which was ironically heavily inspired by Bowie himself. Let’s Dance comes tearing out of the gate, propulsed by the skittering “Modern Love,” the seductively menacing “China Girl,” and the brittle funk of the title track. All three songs became international hits, and for good reason – they’re catchy, accessible pop songs that have just enough of an alien edge to make them distinctive. However, that careful balance is quickly thrown off by a succession of pleasant but unremarkable plastic soul workouts. “Cat People” and a cover of Metro’s “Criminal World” are relatively strong songs, but the remainder of the album indicates that Bowie was entering a songwriting slump. However, the three hits were enough to make the album a massive hit, and their power hasn’t diminished over the years, even if the rest of the record sounds like an artifact.

“Let’s Dance” was the fifteenth studio album by David Bowie, originally released in 1983, with co-production by Chic’s Nile Rodgers.

The title track of the album became one of Bowie’s biggest hit singles, reaching No. 1 in the UK, US and various other countries. Further singles included “Modern Love” and “China Girl,” the latter of which was a new version of a song which Bowie had co-written with Iggy Pop for the Pop’s 197 album, ‘The Idiot.’

The success of the album surprised Bowie, who felt he had to continue to pander to the new pop audience he acquired with the album. This led to Bowie releasing two further solo albums in 1984 and 1987 that, despite their relative commercial success, did not sell as well as Let’s Dance, were poorly received by critics at the time and subsequently dismissed by Bowie himself as his “Phil Collins years.”
