With the first Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band concerts in six years now fewer than 50 days away, a return to where their rebirth began feels fitting. East Rutherford, NJ 7/18/99 was only the band’s second US date on the Reunion tour. It followed a 36-show European leg that saw them playing beloved outtakes (finally released on Tracks), exploring the depths of their own catalog, and rounding into form ahead of an audacious 15-night stand at Continental Airlines Arena to kick off the American run.

If there’s any period in modern Springsteen history that continues to grow in admiration it is the 2007-2008 Magic era.
There was always something appealing in the idea that Bruce and the E Street Band weren’t reuniting after an extended separation (only a few years since Vote For Change) nor called to service by historic events, but simply touring behind an excellent new album. Better still, the Magic tour created the setlist model we’ve had ever since.

Russian pianist Valentin Malinin, winner of the 62nd Jaén International Piano Competition, has chosen a programme that offers moments of reflection alongside dazzling virtuosity. The album opens with Shostakovich’s imposing Piano Quintet, one of the composer’s most popular chamber works. Granados evokes a “Ghost’s Serenade” with guitar-like effects in the exuberant finale to his Goyescas (Serenata del espectro), while Prokofiev’s Four Études are among the most complex and technically challenging works of their kind. Malinin’s own inspired fantasy The Pearl Fishers, based on Nadir’s Romance from Les Pêcheurs de perles, serves as a fine encore, reimagining Bizet’s original in daring, compelling style.

Brandon Allen – The Gene Ammons Project (2017)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 53:36 minutes | 586 MB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © RT Jazz Records
Gene Ammons was one of the founders of the Chicago style of tenor saxophone playing but was often in the shadow of his tenor-playing contemporaries, Dexter Gordon, Wardell Gray, and Sonny Stitt. Despite this he forged a lasting partnership with Stitt, recording some classic tenor battles in the 1950s.
While adept at the technical aspects of bebop, in particular its love of harmonic substitutions, Ammons more than Young, Webster or Parker, stayed in touch with the commercial blues and R&B of his day.
In 1950 the saxophonist’s recording of “My foolish heart” made Billboard magazine’s black pop charts.
The soul jazz movement of the mid-1960s, often using the combination of tenor saxophone and Hammond B3 electric organ, counts him as a founder.
His later career was interrupted by two prison sentences for narcotics possession, the first from 1958 to 1960, the second from 1962 to 1969.
He recorded as a leader for Mercury (1947–1949), Aristocrat (1948–1950), Chess (1950–1951), Prestige (1950–1952), Decca (1952), and United (1952–1953).
For the rest of his career, he was affiliated with Prestige.
After his release from prison in 1969, having served a seven-year sentence at Joliet penitentiary, he signed the largest contract ever offered at that time by Prestige’s Bob Weinstock.
This project focuses on music spanning Gene Ammons’ entire career, from 1943 to 1974.
Compositions written by him or tunes by others that he recorded.

Boston Symphony Orchestra – Shostakovich: Symphonies Nos. 9 & 5 (Live) [Remastered 2022] (2022)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 01:11:32 minutes | 693 MB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Digital Booklet, Front Cover | © Archipel
The Boston Symphony Orchestra and Andris Nelsons earned a Grammy Award in 2015 for their first volume in this Shostakovich series, entitled Shostakovich: Under Stalin’s Shadow. The five album set focuses on works composed during the period of Shostakovich’s difficult relationship with Stalin and the Soviet regime. This installment includes the popular, pre-war Fifth Symphony, the darkly compelling mid-war Eighth Symphony and the elusive, post-victory Symphony No. 9, plus excerpts from Shostakovich’s incidental music for a farcical 1932 Moscow production of Hamlet. These performances were recorded in late 2015 and early 2016 at Boston’s Symphony Hall, one of the world’s most renowned venues for acoustic excellence.
“I could not live without the music of Shostakovich. I’m sure it has something to do with having grown up in the Soviet Union and my connection to the conducting tradition there in St. Petersburg, his hometown, where I studied. But also I feel close to Shostakovich as a person, since he was naively shy rather like myself. I can’t entirely explain why I have such an intimate relationship with his music, but I feel like I know him, in a mystical way.”

Bori Magyar – Whole Wide World (2022)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192 kHz | Time – 40:54 minutes | 1,48 GB | Genre: Folk, Rock
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Hunnia Records
For the record, I wanted to cover songs that had a special effect on me in recent years. Folk songs will always be relevant, their message is eternal. People feel their roots through their folk music, their identity through their mother tongue. World music – as well as this material – is now looking for answers to the question: how is it possible, or perhaps worthwhile, to play ancient songs in our modern world? The musical context in which we place them says a lot about what a folk song brings out of us, how it moves us, how it affects us. This makes the interpretation truly personal. It is a fantastic inner and shared journey. The musical reflections on the songs (which we often formulated together “cutting into each other’s words”) finally came together on the record into a common essence, a lesson. The record turned out to be quite eclectic, as we relied solely on our intuition when processing the songs, on a wide spectrum of music, without borders.

Whether in his original home of Vienna, as a conservatoire director in Germany, or as an émigré in Edinburgh, where he became one of the mainstays of musical life, Hans Gál (1890-1987) championed choral singing as a way of directly involving people in making music: he founded and conducted a number of choirs and provided an extensive output of choral compositions.

Bojan Čičić, The Illyria Consort – La Notte: Concertos & Pastorales for Christmas Night (2022)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 01:05:50 minutes | 1,26 GB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Digital Booklet, Front Cover | © Delphian Records LTD
Bojan Čičić and the Illyria Consort’s latest Delphian recording revels in the great variety of musical styles and traditions that grew up around Christmas and its related feasts in Catholic Europe in the seventeenth century – a time when the introduction of ‘rustic’ effects into instrumental music changed the sound of Christmas forever.
The vivid theatricality of Baroque evocations of the shepherds and their milieu and the unusual combinations of instruments in much of this music, here given in performances brimming with energy and the joy of rediscovery, make this a Christmas album to reach for every year.
