Champs Hill is delighted to release the debut recording from “viola star in the making” (The Strad) Emma Wernig, following her success at the Cecil Aronowitz International Viola Competition.Wernig explores works for viola and piano by 19th and early 20th century Austrian composers. “The viola’s voice is at its most beautiful bringing hidden gems to life through a uniquely Austrian lens. Growing up in an Austrian/German family in the United States, I always sought to feel a deeper connection to my roots. Exploring these works has allowed me to better connect to my heritage and my instrument and feel closer to my cultural and musical identity. Pianist Albert Cano Smit has joined me on this journey of discovery and offered musical inspiration, collaboration, and friendship in making this personal and deeply special disc.” – Emma Wernig

Emma Stevens swaps folk convention that marked her previous records for brighter pop waves. Her fourth studio record, Light Year, out today (April 30), remains earth-bound with her rootsy songwriting style, yet leaps through the stratosphere with starry patterns, decorative synths, and programmed beats. “When I write an album, I don’t tend to specifically set out to make sure all the songs blend well,” she tells American Songwriter. “I really like a lot of different music, and that gets reflected in what I make. This album has a lot of ups and downs, I’ll give you that.”

Emma Ruth Rundle – Engine of Hell (2021) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 40:49 minutes | 750 MB | Genre: Folk Rock, Slowcore, Female Vocal
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Sargent House

2020’s May Our Chambers Be Full saw Emma Ruth Rundle and Baton Rouge sludge enthusiasts Thou spin doom, gothic rock, post-grunge, and icy black metal into a potent and unforgiving opus. Rundle’s predilection for pairing ambience and opulence takes a back seat on Engine of Hell, a stark and stormy set that pairs everything down to the essentials. Rundle’s songs are both remarkably compelling and uncomfortably immersive, stripped of their cavernous reverb and dark finery. Opener “Return,” one of a handful of piano/vocal cuts that evoke the austere beauty of Little Earthquakes-era Tori Amos, sets the tone with a harrowing meditation on existential angst. Rundle switches to guitar for the commanding “Bloom of Oblivion,” which tackles themes of addiction and self-worth — “Down at the methadone clinic we waited/Hoping to take home your cure/The curdling cowards, the crackle of china/You say that it’s making you pure.” Elsewhere, the softly fingerpicked and deep-seated “Razor’s Edge” tries to soften the discord between fate and free will, while the hushed closer “In My Afterlife” manages to find catharsis amidst all of the melancholy and midnight ruminations that preceded it. Peppered with the occasional backing vocal or the ghostly drone of strings, the eight-song set feels less like an “unplugged” session and more like the world’s most intimate house show. Rundle has tempered her sweeping post-rock cinematics with lyrical vulnerability in the past, but Engine of Hell is a braver and bolder beast, as it lays bare the soul of its creator and dares the listener to reckon with it. – James Christopher Monger

Emma gave us a taste of the album in the single “What Is Love?” late in 2018. Recorded for the short film “An Athlete Wrestling a Python’, Emma writes about the simplicities of love, asking “What Is Love?”. During the song she asks, “is it borrowing a t-shirt?” OR is it “reading over shoulders?”. It is many things! Apart from the personal lyrical content, the other prevalent thing in the song is the piano taking the lead. It also does so on the new single “Winter Blues”. The four-and-a-half-minute single is the album’s centrepiece. Incredibly subtle and incredibly beautiful, the song floats in a sombre key, intermittently dotted by Russack’s contemplations, “blame it on the winter blues”. The piano is also showcased on the album’s quieter moments: “Like the Wind”, “Horses” and the album’s stunning finale “Never Before”.

Clearly, if you had penned a hulking 100-page score for a choir of eight, and then gone to the trouble of assembling a group of vocalists, you’d be feeling pretty beat when Covid made the idea almost immediately impossible to execute. Instead, finding herself in this bind, the New York-raised, Irish-American vocalist, songwriter and composer Emma Houton got herself a loop pedal. Choir-less, and confined to her flat, she recorded all of the score’s vocal parts alone. The Bath, released via Trapped Animal, is the arrestingly blissful result.

Emma Blackery can’t remember a time before she wanted to make music. Since picking up her first guitar aged 12, she’s self-released 5 pop-punk EPs, and performed at London’s Wembley Arena and O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire. Now she is turning her attentions towards pure pop, with the release of her eagerly anticipated debut album, Villains. Inspired by artists including Paramore, Taylor Swift and Katy Perry, Emma has worked with renowned producers including Toby Scott (Little Mix, Girls Aloud) and Hutch (Goldfrapp, All Saints) to create a sound that’s fresh, bold, and catchy as hell. Lead single Dirt has had more than 1,000,000 streams and counting, reaching number 5 in the Spotify Viral Chart. “I’ve always written from personal experience”, she says. “I can’t imagine writing about feelings I’ve never had.”Born in 1991 – the same year that the first internet browser was released to the public – it’s fitting that Emma’s career began online. Since starting to share her music on YouTube, she’s amassed a social media reach of 2.2 million fans, alongside a unique perspective on the pitfalls of internet culture. “I’d had experiences before of people being nasty for a like or a retweet but last year someone I considered a friend really hurt me, publicly”, she says. “I ended up taking all social media off my phone and spent a couple of weeks just trying to get back to reality and not be so caught up in it all.”Villains was inspired by that period of reflection, and invites listeners on Emma’s journey from “feeling so paranoid that I risked becoming a person I didn’t like, to letting go of all of that hurt”. Atmospheric album opener Villains Pt. 1 sees her declare, “I am a nightmare. designed to destroy” over a beat that drips with menace. The mood lifts on Agenda – a sunny slice of synth pop – and Fake Friends, which pairs buoyant production with lyrics about two-faced frenemies to create the perfect kiss-off song.

Without any announcement or promotion, 47-year-old Eminem released his 11th solo album, cheerfully starting 2020. “Music To Be Murdered By” is a kind of horror film for competing rappers, named after the eponymous record of the cult horror director Alfred Hitchcock. He even appears in a tracklist with two hermitages. Throughout the album, Em touches on literally everything: from critics who do not accept his current work, and rappers who provoke a nervous tick in Marshall himself, to memories of parties in the prime of his own popularity and toxic romantic relationships. “Darkness” is one of the most personal tracks on the record, in which Em shares his feelings about the fear of loneliness. I am glad that here Eminem is not afraid to collaborate with new artists Young MA, Anderson .Paak, Juice WRLD and Don Toliver, but also does not forget about old friends represented by Royce Da 5’9 ″, Black Thought, Q-Tip, Skylar Gray and pop stars Ed Sheeran. In the musical component, Em balances between different eras of his work. Dr. Dre, D.A. Doman, Royce, Mr. Porter, The Alchemist, Ricky Racks, Luis Resto and, of course, Eminem himself. Pay attention to the final lines of the intro: “Instead of giving us credit for longevity and the ability to be at such a high level all this time, you tell us that we will no longer be who we were. Bitch, if I were at least half the same as before, it would still be twice as good as you will ever be. ” It’s hard to argue with that ..

Hurt in his core by the critics on his comeback album, Revival, Eminem keeps with the times by releasing a surprise album the very same year. Kamikaze is a biting response to naysayers, and most importantly to the new generation of “mumble” rappers, who don’t really impress Eminem, to say the least. Surrounded by trendy producers Mike Will Made It, Ronny J and Tay Keith, Slim Shady strings his verses written in fire, shooting his poisoned arrows towards most of the rap world. Tyler The Creator, Lil Pump, Charlamagne Tha God, Migos, Drake, Joe Budden… Everyone takes a beating.

Emily West’s first release with Sony Masterworks, and her first after finishing as runner-up on the 2014 season of America’s Got Talent, All for You opens with a refined cover of Sia’s “Chandelier,” a song she performed on the talent competition show. Other covers from the show include the Moody Blues’ “Nights in White Satan,” the Phil Phillips classic “Sea of Love,” and Roy Orbison’s “You Got It.” Tenderly delivered, and mostly piano/keys- and strings-accompanied ballads, West leaves behind the country of her early releases and opts for a more classic pop vocal delivery. She’s joined by Cyndi Lauper on a duet version of “True Colors,” and the album’s four original tunes include the Billie Holiday-haunted “Fallen,” co-written with K.S. Rhoads (Kris Allen, Katie Herzig). –AllMusic Review by Marcy Donelson
