Since its early beginnings, organ writing has been characterized by the imitative and contrapuntal style, conducting melodic lines whose rigor well knew how to grasp the distinctive element of the instrument, emission that prevents the perspective differentiation of the different sound planes. The flowering on the Italian territory within the musical chapels of a compositional style of the highest artistic level involved since the beginning the organ, the only musical instrument allowed in places dedicated to rites and religious functions. It was used both in accompaniment and in transcription for the instrument of motets and vocal masses, sometimes even as a substitute for singing, a custom that gave life to the practice of alternatim, alternation between instrument and voice, “Ch’or Si or no s’intenon le parole” (Dante Alighieri, Purgatorio, IX If in the form of servitude to sacred singing the organ repertoire owes its debut, it soon emancipated from this through the flourishing of musical forms exclusively dedicated to Instrumental Performance – ricerca, Tiento, Toccata, Fantasia, intonation, Praeludium, Praeambulum – with a wealth of titles that sometimes translates equivalent forms of writing, some closer to the contrapuntal-imitative style, others to free invention, according to a style more similar to improvisation. It is to this second genre that the stluslus phantasticus refers, a musical gesture of great elasticity and executive freedom.

Nannette Streicher (1769-1833) was regarded throughout her life as a prominent piano maker, who was regarded in Vienna as the «third great Master» after Johann Schantz and Anton Walter already at the age of 27. Not averse to innovation, Nannette Streicher produced instruments at the highest technical level, while good relations with musicians such as Joseph Haydn, Ludwig van Beethoven or Ignaz Schuppanzigh, but also with amateurs such as Karoline Fürstin von Lobkowitz or Georg Graf von Apponyi were helping to sell the grand pianos, with numbers produced rising up to 85 instruments per year. One of these instruments from 1813 was donated to the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna by the Bösendorfer company, where it was restored from 2013 on and even made playable again. Ines Schüttengruber presents this fortepiano on this album with music from the time of its creation by Ludwig van Beethoven, Johann Nepomuk Hummel, Franz Schubert, Ignaz Moscheles, Jan Václav Hugo Vorísek and Anna Maria (Nannette) Streicher.

Prokofiev’s Ten Pieces can also be seen as a work involved in representation, but this time the music aims to render the story of a well-known play, Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Initially, Prokofiev is commissioned by the Bolshoi Theatre to write a ballet based on the play, but the ballet’s production is subsequently cancelled by the Stalinist government, a common occurrence of political censorship in the arts at the time. In response, Prokofiev penned the Ten Pieces for piano in order to be able to perform the music himself instead of relying on the government’s approval for orchestral performance. However, these pieces are not mere orchestral reductions, but pianistically conceived scene paintings, with a virtuoso pianist in mind since Prokofiev himself was a virtuoso performer.

Jorge Grundman is one of Spain’s best-known composers.
