Has any musical reputation in the classical music world suffered more than Ormandy’s? I doubt it. Collectors can sneer all they want at the outdated styles of playing that Karajan and Bernstein brought to the party, but they buy the endless reissues all the same. Toscanini still sets a gold standard for many, and Stokowski is weird and famous enough to continue capturing hearts and minds. I’m not sure what Ormandy did wrong; he was a champion of new music, possibly the world’s greatest accompanist, and loved the world over. And then he died. Maybe that was it. In all seriousness, his musical achievements are worth hearing, and he was a persuasive advocate of Sibelius, among others.

“With her new companion LP, Radio Music Society, the young virtuoso branches out sonically, injecting her jazz roots with some modern soul and pop juice, maybe even inspiring the Bieber faithful to check in on what all the fuss is about… At just 11 tracks, this record flexes serious range, but what’s even more impressive is that it rarely sounds overextended.”

Weiss probably wrote more than 1000 pieces for lute, from which about 850 attributed pieces survived, most of them grouped into ‘sonatas’ (not to be confused with the later classical sonata, based on sonata form) or suites, which consist mostly of baroque dance pieces. Weiss also wrote chamber pieces and concertos, but only the solo parts have survived for most of them.

Acres of Blue is the second volume of solo piano albums by Norwegian pianist Espen Berg, an organic extension of the most beautiful, Noctilucent (Atterklang, 2012). This time Berg chose to present a mixture of original compositions, improvised pieces, and arrangements of pieces that reference the breadth of his musical vocabulary and his formative influences—romantic compositions of Frédéric Chopin, Ludwig Van Beethoven, Nordic pianists-composers as Esbjorn Svensson, Helge Lien and obviously, Keith Jarrett.

Esbjörn Svensson is certainly one of the most influential musicians in modern jazz history. Now “HOME.S.” is his first solo album, released 14 years after his tragic accidental death while diving.

The mere existence of Esbjörn Svensson solo recordings is considered a minor sensation. After all, the musician had concentrated virtually all of his creative energy on his groundbreaking work with his trio e.s.t.. The focus of all participants on “only” one musical project in a fixed constellation had been one of the special features of the Esbjörn Svensson Trio.

It was all the more surprising when nine solo piano pieces were discovered on a hard drive in the personal archive of his wife Eva. The Swedish pianist and composer had recorded them professionally on his own in his basement studio in the weeks before his sudden death in June 2008. Not even Åke Linton knew of the existence of these recordings, although the sound engineer had accompanied all e.s.t. albums and shows for years and, according to Svensson, was considered the fourth member of the band.

Whether the nine pieces, named after letters of the Greek alphabet, were improvised or composed remains as much a mystery as the plans Svensson had for them. But the fact is that the recordings now available are not only the first, but practically the only ones that show him in a setting other than that of the trio: intimate, concentrated and completely with himself.

Glaser has had a number of works written for him and he is currently working on his project “Conversations with J.S.Bach”. Glaser wants to explore the potential to connect the music of Bach with present-day approaches and has commissioned new companion pieces to be played alongside each of the Bach cello suites. Six different Norwegian composers have focussed on one Bach suite each. His hope is to create a unique meeting point between the past and the present; a conversation across timelines.

“Sunshowers” is a triptych exploring the resonance of the piano.

“Out of heart of light” (a fragment of text from T.S. Eliot) uses a rapid-fire rhythmic technique to sound out slowly changing tonal clusters. Chaotic repetitions of tones create unpredictable fluctuations in the sound colour, a kind of “glowing” effect.

“Ghosts” reveals a series of sustaining chords and amplifies imperfections in the decay. We hear the “ghosts” – the normally unheard details – inside the sound.

“Sunshowers” presents a sequence of cascading arpeggios, gently falling from right to left. As the harmonies gradually transform the resonance shifts across the colour spectrum like a rainbow.
