After two live dates cut for the long-suffering faithful, Fink — comprising singer/songwriter/guitarist Fin Greenall, bassist Guy Whittaker, and drummer Tim Thornton — offer their first new studio material in three years. Hard Believer is, for the most part, a slow burner; one that employs a more varied, albeit moodier set of textures and sounds than its predecessor, 2011’s Perfect Darkness. Recorded at Hollywood Sound with producer/engineer Billy Bush (Garbage, Foster the People), the pace here is generally slow — even dirge-like in places — but the timbral palette that illustrates these melancholy songs puts them across in often unexpected ways. The opening title track begins on the blues tip (with Greenall once more revealing his great debt to guitarist Davy Graham). Spare, gently reverbed acoustic guitar and stomp box initiate, but at a tad over a minute in, a multi-tracked vocal chorus subtly enters, followed shortly thereafter by kick drum, skeletal bassline, electric guitar, more echo, piano, and more lathered-on effects to erect a stoned crescendo inside the repetitive-to-the-point-of-hypnosis groove. On “Green and the Blue,” jazzy-folk (à la John Martyn), meets dubwise rhythm painted by a swirling textural buildup via piano, synth, and stacked backing vocals, delivering a pronounced sense of drama. Speaking of dub, it’s the primary vehicle in the steamy “White Flag.” Bass, tom-toms, and heavily edited guitar chords create a frame for the vocals as other instruments appear and vanish seemingly at random in the humid mix. Clearly, Greenall’s previous occupation as a DJ comes in handy here, even when tempos and rhythms are relatively static. The tortoise-like pace in the lion’s share of these cuts creates not only an atmosphere, but underscore the emotional heft in Greenall’s lyrics. That said, a few tracks — “Pilgrim,” “Shakespeare,” and “Looking Too Closely” — shake things up a bit. Their midtempo, nearly rockist dynamics and sprawling production result in Fink coming dangerously close to terrain inhabited by Coldplay. On “Too Late” and “Truth Begins,” the use of slight yet idiosyncratic and deft pop hooks adds a sleight-of-hand dimension that escapes the traps of those numbers. Song to song, Hard Believer is an emotional bummer but it doesn’t suffer from sophomoric self-indulgence; instead, the hazy, gauzy, often open-ended production and arrangements reveal that this group won’t be reined in by a single approach and that a “signature” sonic trademark is far too confining a place to reside. It’s the world of sound that creates individual homes for the tunes. As such, there is a widening sense of exploration at work here; the considerable benefit of that aesthetic is clear even when it falls a tad short of the mark.

From very early on, Mozart was aware of the possibilities of an ensemble situated halfway between concerto and chamber music. Indeed, it was Mozart who paved the way for the piano quartet in 1785 and 1786 with the two masterpieces that are presented here. Such an instrumental ensemble was unknown before this, but from that point onwards it would live on throughout the 19th century through the key works of Schumann and Brahms, then of Dvořák and several other famous musicians. The Quintet in G minor, K. 478, is bold right from the opening few bars, in a passionate key that Mozart used in famous works such as Symphonies Nos. 25 and 40 as well as his fabulous String Quintet, K. 516 from 1787. The powerful first movement, the lyricism of his Andante and his joyful final Rondo in G major have captivated chamber musicians from around the world for centuries. Its counterpart, the Quarter in E-flat major, K. 493, displays the carefree nature of youth but still shows a sense of maturity with darkness and nostalgia.

In 2013 he completed his three-year tenure as Associate Artist of the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra in Dublin, completing a cycle of the complete Mozart and Beethoven piano concertos. Over the past two decades Collins has developed a close relationship with Claves Records, recording two double albums of Schumann’s piano music in 2006 and 2009 which won numerous awards including Gramophone’s Editor’s Choice. The current Chopin recording is a judicious medley of famous – a Prélude, the Fourth Ballade, the Polonaise-fantaisie – and more confidential works among which a handful of Mazurkas and Nocturnes.

Antonín Dvořák’s music, imbued with the spirit of Bohemia, reflects a love of his native land. His String Sextet, written in the distinctive style which brought him international fame, was an immediate success at its premiere. Composed just eight years earlier, his String Quartet No. 4, unpublished until 1968, features pioneering, wild outer movements, highly unusual for the time, which foreshadowed the modernist innovations of composers decades later. A moving Andante religioso, which Dvořák made use of in future works, lies at its heart. The Polonaise exploits both the soulful and virtuoso character of the cello.

The string quartets of Beethoven are among the greatest works of their kind, but he composed other works for quartet which have been neglected. This album is dedicated to these intriguing rarities. Alongside the wild and monumental Grosse Fuge, in many ways the culmination of Beethoven’s achievements in the string quartet genre, this recording further displays his mastery of counterpoint by bringing to light brilliant yet forgotten original versions of his quartets Op. 18, No. 1 and Op. 131, plus six virtually unknown miniatures, including his Preludes and Fugues.

The Bay Area shoegaze group offer up an early listen of their fifth studio album their first in eight years. With the recent reunions of such canonical figures as My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, and Ride, shoegaze is unquestionably back. Consequently, so is Film School. With their first album since 2010’s Fission, the San Francisco noisemakers have returned with the perfect thing; Bright to Death is not only a loyal adherent to its genre’s tradition, but also exhibits some of the band’s sharpest work to date.

“When this lineup first came together in the early 2000s, I never thought we’d be doing some of our best work fifteen or so years later,” admits singer and guitarist Greg Bertens. “Our [self-titled] album came out in 2006, when bands like The Strokes and Franz Ferdinand were in full swing. The music landscape was totally different then shoegaze was a bad word. That’s changed.”

With Franz Ferdinand and at least one Stroke back in full swing albeit in entirely different corners of the sandbox Film School have found their stride in a significantly less homogenized era for rock, threading the needle previously framed by “Lectric”’s dark trance and “Sunny Day”’s bright guitars. Bright to Death’s forty-minute run time straddles a middle ground of hazy noise pop driven by a darkwave undercurrent. Check out the album in full below a day before its official release via Hauskat Records.

In 1516 Ludovico Ariosto published his powerful epic Orlando furioso, a sequence of intertwined heroic adventures. The story of the knight Orlando, driven mad by a disappointed love for the princess Angelica, serves the entire range of emotions and quickly achieved great success throughout Europe. Dozens of operas were created around Orlando and other characters from Ariosto‘s epic. Countertenor Filippo Mineccia has put together a varied programme of arias from operas by Steffani, Porpora, Vivaldi, Handel, Mele, Wagenseil and Millico around the figure of “Raging Roland“, in which he brilliantly displays all the creative facets of his voice.

Francesco Gasparini was held in high esteem by his contemporaries, as can be easily seen from his curriculum vitae: In Rome he was in the service of the great patrons of the arts Cardinal Pamphili, Marchese Ruspoli and the Borghese family, and in between he was music director at the Ospedale della Piet`a in Venice for twelve years, at the same time as Antonio Vivaldi. Gasparini wrote a total of almost 60 operas and nearly 30 oratorios, which were performed in many Italian cities. The countertenor Filippo Mineccia has cherry-picked the repertoire that suits his voice and presents a portrait of Gasparini’s alto arias. He was very careful to select arias with different affects in order to present Gasparini’s broad dramatic palette. Slow arias are interspersed with furioso pieces and contrapuntal pieces. Particularly brilliant are the rage arias, in which Mineccia is able to display all his vocal prowess. In the richly orchestrated and harmonically exciting arias from Gasparini’s oratorios, the Orchestra Nazionale Barocca dei Conservatori Italiani can shine with its qualities.

This release features a collection of works for flute and piano written by a group of contrasting French composers during the exciting Belle Époque period, which occurred between the end of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century. ‘Chant dans la nuit’ is the outcome of a ten-year project which has involved flautist Filippo Mazzoli and pianist Nathalie Dang in intense, pioneering research conducted within the music section of the Paris Bibliothéque Nationale. Quite a number of these works are recorded here for the first time, including Fontbonne’s Chasse aux papillons Op. 30, Louis Masson’s Trois pièces, Xavier Leroux’s Le Nil, Moret’s Nuit de langueur, nuit de mensonge, Coedès-Mongin’s Suite Op. 5, Lefort’s Sur l’Eau, and Guilmant’s Romance sans paroles Op. 85. To quote Filippo Mazzoli, these are ‘evocative titles, like the music they feature. They are positive sensations that precisely reflect the years in which they were composed [and they express] the desire for well-being, and the desire to always be proactive and positive.

After a first recording of Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations acclaimed by the critics (“Diapason d’Or”, BBC, Guardian, Le Monde) Filippo Gorini, a student of Alfred Brendel and winner of the first Prize and Audience Prize of the Bonn Beethoven Competition in 2015, pursues a fast-growing career. Here he returns to Beethoven and tackles the perilous Sonata No. 29, ‘Hammerklavier’, which the composer himself said would pose a challenge for future generations, along with the Sonata No. 32, which according to Thomas Mann represents the supreme accomplishment of and ‘farewell’ to sonata form.

Supporting new talents is in Alpha’s DNA. Here is the very first recording of the Italian pianist Filippo Gorini, who was recently awarded First Prize in the Telekom-Beethoven Competition in Bonn. He has also won the same competition’s Audience Prize twice over. At just twenty years of age, he has already played in such prestigious venues as the Berlin Konzerthaus, the Leipzig Gewandhaus, the Laeiszhalle in Hamburg, the Herkulessaal in Munich, the Liederhalle in Stuttgart, Die Glocke in Bremen, the Royal Academy of Music in London, and the Moscow Conservatory. Strongly supported by Alfred Brendel, with whom he studies, he has chosen to tackle a monument of the piano repertory, the Diabelli Variations, a work whose interpretation he has matured through frequent performance, notably at the Beethoven Competition where it was the key item in his winning programme. And, appropriately, it is at the Beethovenhaus in Bonn that he made this first disc, the start of a highly promising recording career.

The Italian pianist Filippo Gorini took advantage of the world health crisis to immerse himself in The Art of Fugue, Johann Sebastian Bach’s unfinished mystical masterpiece: “The view that it should be seen solely as a theoretical marvel is misguided: as the counterpoints and canons evolve in formal complexity, so does their emotional tension, until the heartbreaking mystery of the unfinished Fuga XIV”, says the young pianist, winner of a Borletti-Buitoni Trust prize in 2020, whose first two albums for Alpha have been very well received. In parallel with the release of this recording, Filippo Gorini will launch a website (www.TheArtOfFugueExplored.com), with a documentary series featuring conversations with personalities, films about Bach’s work and more. The young pianist has even gone so far as to write poems and haikus about the work: “We pray in trepidation, / When the blessed night is here…”.

In the opera PAGLIACCI by Ruggero Leoncavallo, fiction and reality, life and the theatre and love and death are intertwined with the music for the staging of a drama inspired by a true story in black, a femicide (unfortunately very timely) took place in Montalto Uffugo during the childhood of the composer, and who had occupied the father, during his term of office as a magistrate in the small town of calabria. This one-act opera is characterized by a musical and dramatic continuity that poses an arduous challenge to the director, so that Pagliacci does not reduce itself to a series of famous pieces [how to Recitar! Dress the jacket n. d. r.] for exuberant voices, but you find in the most famous pieces, as many fundamental touches in the drawing of passions (from the notes of the booklet).
