Already hailed as his country’s foremost composer, Sibelius completed what was to be his only concerto in early 1904, and its spellbinding and instantly recognisable opening can surely be counted amongst the most iconic of any. A virtuosic violinist himself, Sibelius beautifully evokes Finland’s natural landscape and ancient folklore, which continues through Sibelius’s 1917 work for violin and orchestra – the Six Humoresques – demanding a considerable level of technique. Violinist Fenella Humphreys joins with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and conductor George Vass to present these formidable works with a world premiere recording of a new work for violin and orchestra by the American composer Nors S. Josephson – Celestial Voyage.

Unfamiliar with Fences, aka Christopher Mansfield I could be forgiven by taking the visual and assuming what I was going to hear matches up to the image of the man himself. Instead within seconds, I realized I was not in Kansas anymore, a melodic, emotive range of songwriting flowed across the headphones immersed in soft poised vocals that told a story beyond the lyrics itself.

Legendary activist and Afrobeat originator, Fela Kuti, used his music to lament social injustices and political corruption in his native Nigeria. Fela’s legacy spans decades and genres, touching on jazz, pop, funk, hip-hop, rock, and beyond. While this impact can be felt in Nigeria and the entire world, it also greatly affected Fela’s son Femi and his son Made, both of whom carry his legacy as torchbearers for change. Here, we have the eldest son of the Kuti family, Femi, with his tenth album: One People, One World. It’s a record that holds to the revolutionary, conscious and dance-centred essence of Afrobeat as created by the unforgettable Fela. But it also shows off the particular talents of Femi and his group Positive Force. Before they were committed to disc, these pieces had spent a long time being perfected on the stage of the Shrine, as he had it rebuilt in Lagos, on the site of the temple built by his father. The heritage is dealt with very confidently; but the Afrobeat sound isn’t stuffy: it bears the mark of our times as seen through Fela’s legacy. The message is global, positive and fully summed up in the title One People, One World. From one end of the world to the other, we are in the same mess, on the edge of the same abyss; but we must not lose hope; we have to fight injustice.

Felt is a late 1970s British indie-rock cult band founded by the mononymous individual Lawrence. “Let the Snakes Crinkle Their Heads to Death” was their fifth studio album, released in 1986. For the 2018 reissue of the album, Lawrence returned the record to its original planned title, renaming it “The Seventeenth Century”. The reissue also featured a different cover, replacing previously used photographs with typography.
