Sundown is Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot’s 10th studio album, originally released in 1974. The record made it to the number one spot in the US, his only record to make it to the top spot.

Lightfoot’s commercial peak came with this album, which topped the US charts, containing both the #1 title song and the Top 10 hit “Carefree Highway.” But songs like “Somewhere U.S.A.” and “High and Dry” are textured, catchy folk/rock on a par with the better known tunes.

The legendary songwriter, who last released ‘Harmony’ in 2004, found ‘Solo’s material tucked away in his office in his Toronto home; the two discs of material were recorded in late 2001 and early 2002, just before Lightfoot suffered a near-fatal abdominal aortic aneurysm. After rediscovering the songs, Lightfoot entered Hamilton, Ontario’s Grant Avenue Studio to rerecord the tracks with only his guitar.

Gordon Grdina’s The Marrow – Safar-e-daroon (2020) [Official Digital Download 24bit/88,2kHz]

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Songlines Recordings

Here is the second release by The Marrow, Grdina’s Vancouver/New York project adapting Arabic and Persian forms to a jazz approach and ethos. For Grdina there is nothing exotic in this endeavor – he’s been playing oud since he was a teenager and first recorded with it on his Songlines debut, Think Like the Waves (2006); his Arabic/jazz 10-piece, Haram, debuted in 2008 and released Her Eyes Illuminate in 2012. Haram is at heart an extravert Vancouver party band filled with avant-jazz improvisers playing the heck out of old-time Arabic pop and folk tunes; The Marrow explores a deeper level of expressive fusion between worlds by means of original compositions (some more or less rooted in tradition, others more fluid in the influences they stir together and the emotions they evoke) and performers whose intuitive grasp of the material and group dynamics is very finely honed.

Vancouver guitarist Gordon Grdina has cultivated multiple projects and collaborations over his career, including his group the East Van Strings and this 2009 album written for string trio and guitar, inspired by Grdina’s longtime fascination with the music of Bartók, Webern and Berg and an appreciation of Jim Hall’s late career pieces for strings. The opportunity to put together his dream trio only came in 2006, when Grdina began writing with the trio members in mind, the written material based on ideas that had emerged during free playing with each of them individually and which seemed to reference Bartók and the second Viennese school.

The young, Vancouver guitarist and oud player Gordon Grdina sought out Gary Peacock after a Keith Jarrett concert in San Francisco in 2000, and for the next five years Gary became his mentor and teacher. At their last meeting at Gary’s house in upstate New York there was virtually no discussion, they just sessioned together for an hour or so, and the next day Gordon asked Gary if he would do a trio record. Gary agreed, and helped bring Paul Motian (another of Gordon’s musical heroes) into the picture. Recorded in Brooklyn in January, Think Like the Waves is a remarkable international jazz debut, full of compelling original tunes by Grdina and deep interaction by the trio.

Gordon Goodwin’s Little Phat Band – An Elusive Man (2016) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

Winning 4 Grammys and 20 Grammy nominations is a reliable indicator for constant and high-level professionalism. Gordon Goodwin built his fame with the Big Phat Band, a large 18-piece ensemble. Little Phat Band is his 8-member alternative.
Their debut album An Elusive Man is available since September 9, 2016. Beside Gordon (piano and tenor sax) are performing Wayne Bergeron (trumpet), Eric Marienthal (alto and tenor sax), Andy Martin (trombone), Andrew Synowiec (electric and acoustic guitar), Rick Shaw (electric and acoustic bass), Bernie Dresel (drums) and Joey De Leon (percussion).
The LP Shuffle is a striking example for a Big Band formation with natural energy and a blistering chemistry. The emphasis is on pure brass in straight swinging. Cot In The Act is full of fun and flavor with guitar and sax in expanding solos. But when the brass team gets underway, the music is reaching full steam.
Behind You opens a plethora of musical boxes, moods and styles. One never knows what to find next corner. On the title track Andrew Synowiec brings in a sonic fury with bluesy approach on electric guitar through distortion effects. The various horns amp up to a powerful equipoise.
Samba Cya pulses with impressive solos by pianist Gordon Goodwin and guitarist Andrew Synowiec. A scorebook of this Latin jazz tune is available. Garaje Gato (Garage Cat) celebrates the salsa, the rhythm and more flowers of beautiful Latin America with musical pyrotechnics of Wayne Bergeron on trumpet, Bernie Dresel on drums and Gordon on piano.
With I Know You and Miles Davis’ Walkin’ Little Phat Band returns to the swinging jazz of East Coast with a broad jazz orchestration. In A Sentimental Mood is a composition by Duke Ellington (1935), he recorded with John Coltrane. The band keeps the original arrangement untouched and opens this way a window to the glorious time of Big Bands with their very own spirit.
Why We Can’t Have Nice Things exposes Eric Marienthal’s impressive talent on tenor sax which he only can expand in full range when he is performing the jazz realm. Andy Martin follows with another smashing solo on trombone.
Gordon Goodwin is with his formations the first address in Big Bands and with An Elusive Man he remains in this genre the measure of all things.

Written and arranged by Gordon Goodwin, “The Reset” reflects on some of the changes felt during the world’s collective experience of dealing with Covid-19. A departure from most of their other material, there is less emphasis on melody and structure with more free association, compositionally speaking. The nearly 7-minute excursion features more programming elements like synth textures, drum loops, and SFX, but the focus remains the amazing human beings that perform the music. To highlight the incredible musicians in the 18-person Big Phat Band, multiple mixes were created, each one featuring a different soloist, including Eric Marienthal (soprano sax), Jeff Driskill (tenor sax), Mike Rocha (trumpet), Francisco Torres (trombone), and Gordon Goodwin on keyboard. This version, the title track to the newly released 5-song EP, features guitarist Will Brahm and Brian Scanlon on tenor sax.
