Myron Elkins didn’t set out to become a full-time musician. After graduating from high school, the then 17-year-old instead became a welder in his hometown of Otsego, Michigan and had every intention of making that his career. However, fate had other plans. Three years ago, a relative signed him up for a battle of the bands at a local venue, despite the fact Elkins’ only prior experience with live music was playing at church and a few bars in the small Michigan town where he grew up. With just three weeks’ notice, Elkins put a band together featuring three of his cousins and a friend. Although the group didn’t win (they came in second), the experience opened Elkins’ eyes to a very different career path.

Jahrhunderts.

Richard Strauss was in his element shortly after 1900 when he prepared to portray his now three-member family in a symphonic way: “Bubi” had expanded the cozy togetherness with his wife (and soprano) Pauline into a “trio con brio” since 1897 and the artist marriage was the greatest cheerfully mixed up. The press and the public were shocked: How could you write a symphony about yourself and divulge the most intimate secrets of your married life (musically)! Strauss, however, was convinced, like his great role model Goethe, that an artist fundamentally draws “from the poetic content of his own life” and was not at a loss to acknowledge the premiere of his “Sinfonia domestica” in the New York department store Wanamaker, which had been cleared out especially for this purpose, as ” and legitimate earning of a living for wife and child”.

Mirsaeed Hosseiny Panah is an Iranian composer and musician with Santoor as his main instrument – a trapezoid shaped string instrument played on with small hammers. His curiosity toward different genres of music motivated him to study classical and jazz music in addition to the heritage of Iranian classical music. His background gave him the conclusion that despite the contrast between these musical fields, there is still a musical language out there that stands as a combination of all three. In 2013 he graduated from Tehran University, and recently he graduated with his second master’s degree from the Norwegian Academy of Music (NMH). In addition to being invited as a soloist with different orchestras/bands, he has been given several commissions as a composer and arranger.

Swiss conductor Michel Corboz heads the English Bach Festival Baroque Orchestra in this programme of works from George Frideric Handel, focusing on the Suite from Rodrigo, HWV 5 and Il pastor fido, HWV 8a.
Rodrigo (HWV 5) is an opera in three acts composed by George Frideric Handel. Its original title was Vincer se stesso è la maggior vittoria (“To overcome oneself is the greater victory”). The opera is based on the historical figure of Rodrigo, the last Visigothic king of Spain. The libretto was based on Francesco Silvani’s II duello d’Amore e di Vendetta (“The conflict between love and revenge”). Dating from 1707, it was Handel’s first opera written for performance in Italy, and the first performance took place in Florence late in 1707.
Il pastor fido (“The Faithful Shepherd”) (HWV 8) is an opera seria in three acts by George Frideric Handel. It was set to a libretto by Giacomo Rossi based on the famed and widely familiar pastoral poem of the ‘Il pastor fido’ by Giovanni Battista Guarini. It had its first performance on 22 November 1712 at the Queen’s Theatre in the Haymarket, London.

Eight years after her double-length self-titled ECM debut, the Norwegian Sami tenor saxophonist Mette Henriette Martedatter Rølvåg has returned with an album of brief musical haikus, introductions and unfinished thoughts—shadowy free jazz/contemporary music meant to provoke endings to her short moody statements. While half of her debut featured a big band, Henriette is now joined only by a pair of players, both of whom are leaders in their own right: pianist Johan Lindvall (who appeared on that first album) and versatile Australian cellist Judith Hamann.

Chicago’s Metropolitan Jazz Octet partners with the acclaimed vocalist Paul Marinaro to create an inspired tribute to the durability and pure magic of David Bowie’s songwriting legacy. Reinterpreting without replicating, due in no small part to Marinaro’s riveting vocals paired with creative arrangements, the octet palette reveals transparency and intimacy, coaxing nuanced colors more indicative of a larger orchestra, laying out an inventive complement to Bowie’s lyrics. The MJO was originally founded in the ’50s by saxophonist/arranger Tom Hilliard and documented first in 1959’s The Legend of Bix on Argo Records. Its re-awakening in 2014 by Hilliard’s former student, Jim Gailloreto, extends the rich legacy of Hilliard’s library of compositions and devotion to this elegant chamber ensemble.
