“Brothers” is the fruit of the tandem Portal-Deconfin, two childhood friends from Bourges, who found themselves in New York and who today deliver a common partition logically entitled “Brothers”. This album was conceived just a few weeks after the release of the first album of Geraud Portal, Recall the facts. In 2013, Géraud conquered the United States with his double bass. He lands in New York, in the home of the legendary bassist Bill Lee, father of director Spike Lee. In this house, Géraud met other musicians, also hosted by Bill: Arnold Lee (saxophone), Kush Abadey (drums) and Ben Solomon (saxophone), all three members, moreover, of Wallace Roney’s band. From a studio in the basement, the house quickly becomes a sound laboratory for these young musicians, who work there night and day. A few weeks later, Etienne puts his suitcases at Bill’s house; the quintet of Geraud Portal has just been born. Their first album will be released in February 2014. In tribute to Bill, it bears the name of the neighborhood in which he lives in Brooklyn, “Fort Greene”. Even before the French tour of the quintet began, Géraud and Etienne began writing this second album, which was recorded in December 2013 in New York, at the studio Peter Karl (Brooklyn). Their adventure is now Parisian for our greatest pleasure.

Un son. Brut. Un leadership. Naturel. Charles Mingus. Géraud Portal. Louis Michaud

The life and work of Robert Schumann has a dual characteristic. In immersing oneself in one or the other, we face an almost systematic duality. He himself was aware of this, appearing in both his writings and in his compositions sometimes under the guise of Eusebius, the tender, introverted dreamer, and sometimes as Florestan, the fiery, impassioned fighter. In studying his life and work, one gains the impression that the greatest lucidity and some form of madness stood side by side in him. But as one deepens one’s knowledge of him as a creator and as a man, one realises that what appears to be contradictory is in fact quite cohesive.

Trip Into Friendship is the project of three musician friends celebrating their long friendship with music. Orlando “Maraca” Valle in Havana, Orlando Poleo in Caracas and Gerard Naulet in Paris have been friends for 20 years. This recording under Orlando “Maraca” Valle’s brilliant artistic direction and Orlando Poleo’s exceptional rhythmic pulse, with a supporting wink from Gérard Naulet for Latin-jazz, help traditional melodies of Cuba music meet the original compositions of the three musician friends. The “trip” is a tribute to Latin-American music. Getting together a world-class group of musician friends during a stay in the Norman Countryside, because music knows no boundaries, and celebrating Cuban and Latin-American traditions, is the invitation offered by Gérard Naulet and his “Amigos” with this festive and passionate trip. This album is dedicated to Alena, Orlando Valle’s daughter; for whom he wrote the very beautiful same name melody during the recording.

New bottle, same old wine! With Cooking, Géraldine Laurent serves up another delicacy along with the entire team from her brilliant 2015 album At Work: the amazing Paul Lay on piano, Yoni Zelnik on double bass, Donald Kontomanou on drums and the pianist Laurent de Wilde on production. The years spent in each other’s company have clearly strengthened their intuitiveness and they reveal here a record that feels even more powerful than its predecessor. Those who follow Géraldine Laurent will recognise the saxophonist’s warmth and musical force. She truly makes her instrument sing, without ever being excessive. Between the four of them, both the individual conversations and the collective playing reach new heights of cohesion. Nobody poses any metaphysical questions on the state of jazz in 2019, no. They’re there to conjure up strong emotions and call on ghosts such as Sonny Rollins, Wayne Shorter, Paul Desmond and Eric Dolphy. In some ways, the title Cooking speaks volumes. Laurent de Wilde comments “Géraldine wanted to call it that because in music, like in the kitchen, it is a team effort to measure out each ingredient so as to reach a perfect final result. Because an album is cooked up like a meal and it is in fact possible to have taste buds in your ears. Because the pleasure of music is organised, weighed and tasted. And because we always like to hear a passing musician feeling that same pleasure when they push open the venue door and exclaim, amazed: wow… what’s cooking?!”. Ultimately, while At Work featured themes by the greats (Monk, Mingus, Jobim), Cooking is above all the work of Géraldine Laurent, who signs ten of the eleven themes. Here too, her beautiful pieces contain nods towards her elders, but above all they are vast soundscapes – perfect for improvisations. This is pure jazz (no added colourings or conservatives) and you come out from the intense 47 minutes feeling thoroughly reinvigorated. – Marc Zisman

This release includes the world première recording of the full orchestral score written by Armas Järnefelt (18691958) for Mauritz Stillers silent film Song of the Crimson Flower (1919) performed by Gävle Symphony Orchestra under Jaakko Kuusisto. Armas Järnefelt today largely known in music literature only as Sibelius brother-in-law became one of the most remarkable Finnish orchestral composers during the 1890s. The composer wrote several symphonic poems and orchestral suites in his young age which were highly successful and widely performed by various orchestras in his home country. However, for reasons unknown, Järnefelt decided to devote himself to conducting. In the years to follow, Järnefelt moved to Sweden and become a highly-esteemed conductor. Some of Järnefelts miniatures became hits for salon orchestras in Europe, such as his Berceuse, but this recording makes more justice to a largely forgotten Nordic composer. In 1919, Finnish-born film director Mauritz Stiller approached Armas Järnefelt and commissioned him to write an orchestral score for his silent film Song of the Scarlet Flower (Sången om den eldröda blomman), based on a novel by Finnish author Johannes Linnankoski. Järnefelt made great efforts for the project and as a result, wrote a large 100-minute orchestral score. The work can be considered as his final orchestral masterpiece and a pioneer work in film music. The film was a huge hit and went on to be screened in more than 40 countries in addition to Sweden. It was also the first ever Nordic feature-length film to have a full-length original score written for it. Järnefelts score was lost for a long time, although he did conduct a recording of extracts from the score in 1931. In the 1980s the original score was rediscovered among the possessions of Järnefelts relatives. Järnefelts score was augmented and restored by Jani Kyllönen and Jaakko Kuusisto for the present recording.

On the West side of the Alps, Italian composer Vito Palumbo (born in 1972) isn’t very well known yet, even though his music is played in abundance in many countries in the classical world. Right from the start, let’s say the first three seconds, one could very well imagine his 2006 Concerto barocco to be two hundred fifty years older, but after just two bars, the musical discourse diverts, becoming atonal, breaking up, while always keeping the rigorous form of baroque entertainment in mind. Granted the choice of the harpsichord as a soloist corrupts our vigilance and, much like in Martinů, Poulenc or Falla, one tends to think this is the work of a very old artist who would have gone mad! Regardless Concerto barocco is deliciously fresh and leads the listener to wonder how the next track on the album would sound like, in the present case his 2007 Cello concerto. And there, baroque references are nowhere to be found, we are thrown right in the 21st century – meaning the 70s and 80s avant-garde has been carefully left out in a language where musical beauty and phrases prevail, even if they are on the fringes of tone. The listener, growing further intrigued, starts wondering about what the 2013 Recorder concerto that closes the album might sound like… and how in the world a recorder can compete with a great modern symphonic orchestra! The recorder is indeed modern, from the brand Eagle, and its material, range, sound uniformity from bass to treble, and most importantly its power, make it equal to any of today’s transverse flutes. But with the sound of an unknown recorder. The music itself makes use of all the possibilities, plays with balance and unfolds with great modern beauty. Vito Palumbo, a name worth remembering!

György Vashegyi and his Orfeo Orchestra and Purcell Choir offer up a recording of Boismortier’s Les Voyages de l’Amour of which this 1736 opéra-ballet has been in sore need, a score long and unjustly neglected. For this latest dramatic extravaganza on Glossa, Chantal Santon-Jeffery takes on the title role of lovesick Cupid, and the soprano is joined by two further widely experienced stars of the French Baroque opera revival in Katherine Watson (as the god of love’s sidekick and factotum Zéphire) and Judith van Wanroij as the shepherdess Daphné, smartly resistant to the god’s charms (until the end of the fourth act).
By 1736, Joseph Bodin de Boismortier had become well-known in Parisian musical circles for his entertaining instrumental and vocal music and in his booklet essay Benoît Dratwicki (of the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles) explains how this fashionable composer came to have his first production for the Paris Opéra cast into the shadows, how the roles for Cupid and Zéphire may have originally been written for two prominent dessus of the time but were replaced by male singers for the première and how this new recorded edition aims to provide a performance as the composer would have wanted it.
Katia Velletaz, Éléonore Pancrazi and Thomas Dolié also contribute to this lively entertainment, with this release also containing two differing versions of the second act about the arrow-firing god of love’s travels through village, city and court in search of true love for himself.

Loss, death, and redemption: Anton Bruckner went through a whirlwind of emotions during the two years in which he wrote the Seventh Symphony. The worst theater fire in history left hundreds dead practically next door to his Vienna apartment; Bruckner would have been one of the victims, had he not decided at the last minute to stay at home instead of going to the opera. He still feared that the flames might engulf his apartment and his manuscripts. As he wrote shortly thereafter to a friend: “The inexpressible misery of so many souls makes the blood run cold!” In the Seventh Symphony, Bruckner incorporated all those unsettling impressions, as well as the mourning over the death of Richard Wagner, his admired “ideal.” The work, however, is by no means somber; it’s four movements trace an unswerving path toward redemption. The symphony’s premiere in 1884 in Leipzig was a resounding success and catapulted Bruckner for many years to the forefront of the European music scene. Leading up to the 200th anniversary of Bruckner’s birth in 2024, François-Xavier Roth and the Gürzenich Orchestra will release the Austrian composer’s complete symphonies in new recordings: the cycle is inaugurated on this recording with the Seventh Symphony. François-Xavier Roth’s approach to Bruckner is lean and light-footed; the sonority remains transparent at all times. He calls Bruckner “a trailblazer of Modernism.” Roth creates an unforgettable musical experience with the Gürzenich Orchestra, which has been closely associated with Bruckner’s symphonic output for well over a century. These recordings of acclaimed live concerts from the Cologne Philharmonie are all processed in audiophile high-resolution DXD technique.

After two recordings devoted to Mahler’s Third and Fifth symphonies, François-Xavier Roth continues his exploration of the major works premiered by the Gürzenich Orchestra. In the spotlight this time are two of the young Richard Strauss’s most brilliant achievements: Till Eulenspiegel and Don Quixote. In the latter, a symphonic poem in the guise of a double concerto, Jean-Guihen Queyras and Tabea Zimmermann form a picaresque duo playing the Knight of the Doleful Countenance and his squire Sancho Panza.
