Hedvig Mollestad must surely be one of the hardest working musicians on the Norwegian music scene at the moment, with “Tempest Revisited” being her third album in a mere 18 months, all at a consistently high artistic level. Her first solo album, “Ekhidna” (2020), received a Spellemannpris (Norwegian Grammy), appeared on several jazz and rock best of the year lists and got her into Downbeat´s “25 for the future” selection. “Tempest Revisited” draws lines back to 1998 and the very beginning of Rune Grammofon. This was the year we released “Electric”, the collected electronic works of Arne Nordheim, one of Norway´s greatest composers. It was also the year when parts of “The Tempest”, possibly his most cherished and well-known work, was chosen to be performed at the opening of Parken, the new cultural house in Ålesund, birthplace of Hedvig Mollestad. To celebrate 20 years, the culture house was ready for a new storm, and the first name that came to them was Hedvig, a local artist that was already making waves on the international scene with her power-trio. Hedvig took inspiration from the front of the house, adorned with Nordheim´s score for “The Tempest”, at the same time making a direct connection to the sometime heavy weather conditions of this coastal area in the northwest part of Norway. One could say it´s a big paradox that over all this might be Hedvig´s most lyrical and less aggressive collection of music. On the other hand it´s quite a dynamic record, lots of light and shade and enough sonic parts at work to evoke the elements, the mighty Gran Cassa drum only one of them. The music included here was adapted from the initial performance in 2018 and produced by Hedvig in the studio the following year for this album release. The musicians included are old friends Marte Eberson from the Ekhidna band, Ivar Loe Bjørnstad from her trio and Trond Frønes (Red Kite) on bass as well as a horn section of three.
Yet another triumph in a more than impressive discography.

Heavy Tin – Back To Nowhere (2020) [Official Digital Download 24bit/44,1kHz]

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Concinnity Recordings

Back to Nowhere is Heavy Tin’s fifth record and comes eight years after their critically acclaimed fourth “Makeover” a JamBand heavy-rotation-chart-topping favorite on traditional radio. Back To Nowhere opens with a tune called Dem Keys a languid bop number with piano swinging over a slick walked bass with just enough synth to give it identity and flavor. One thing’s for sure Dem Keys is new and compelling. G Blues is a tune built like a metal fortress with bop jazz and rockabilly ramparts. The tune compounds uniquely in nondescript meters of both five and seven with basses so dense it’s like an army on the march. Seven Flights Down lands on a lighter tone keeping an easy flowing meter of seven throughout. It’s an avantgarde pop jazz thing that’s sure to win over plenty of listeners. What it Was When it Wasn’t is a bop jazz number but Heavy Tin diverted convention and gave to a more lavish coloration. Sloppy Joe the Fez-Man is a loose progressive sort of thing with no easily recallable antecedent. Next up “It’s Blue See” a blues number that took a turn north or south depending on your blue compass and landed amalgamated in musical limbo where it found sonority and phrase. Whatever this music is it’s easy to listen to music. Jazz Night at the Neptune is a jam with the fishes. Back to Nowhere, the title track, has uptown personality and low-town swag. It’s an industrial avantgarde jazz with plenty of syn-smack! Perhaps the true meaning of Back to Nowhere is that nowhere is somewhere to someone. So come Back To Nowhere and put your feet up.

Since his 2012 debut as Heathered Pearls, Jakub Alexander has constructed art — music, objects, installations, performances — as a way of re-imagining fragments of his past and mapping ideas for his future. The Polish-born, Michigan-raised, New York-based artist and producer sees imagery and narrative framework as fluid components to his craft. Alexander’s first album, Loyal, mimicked the hypnotic motions of ocean waves at night, offering melodic, loop-based ambient music as a tribute to the tasteful influence of his mother and aunt. The second Heathered Pearls album, Body Complex, found inspiration from comfort, imperfection, and visions of interior architecture, transforming Loyal’s soft textures into driving 4/4 figures, glacial tone drifts, and starry synth plateaus. His 2017 EP, Detroit, MI 1997 – 2001, reflected on a formative era through ephemeral dance music. The third Heathered Pearls full-length, Cast, returns to moodier loop formats joined by the distinctly new presence of the spoken word. The move mirrors the multitudes of its namesake: collaborators comprise a cast, healing in the bind of a cast, complex emotions and the shadows they cast.

Heather Crosse, a respected bassist from Clarksdale, Mississippi, now releases her debut on Ruf Records. Her band Heavy Suga‘ & the SweeTones has appeared frequently at the world-famous Ground Zero Blues Club and has performed at major festivals, opening for B.B. King, Robert Plant and others. As a singer, Crosse looks to soul and blues icons like Etta James, Koko Taylor and Big Mama Thornton for inspiration.

Her solo debut Groovin’ At The Crosse Roads shows what she’s really about. It’s all blues – with a soul twist. “I grew up singing Motown and a couple of my blues mentors did a lot of 70s soul. So that tends to come out in the songs that I’m writing,” explains Crosse, who co-wrote five of the album’s eleven tracks while also paying tribute to heroes such as Etta James and Big Mama Thornton. It’s the kind of mix she relies on to get Mississippi crowds dancing on a Saturday night.

The Heath Quartet makes its harmonia mundi début with this contrasting programme of Tchaikovsky’s String Quartets: his Quartet No. 1 (famed for its plaintive “Andante cantabile”) and the tempestuous No. 3 (dedicated to the memory of Ferdinand Laub).

Since being selected by YCAT and winning 1st Prize at the Tromp Competition in 2008 the Heath Quartet has forged a strong international presence. In 2011 they were awarded a prestigious Borletti-Buitoni Special Ensemble Scholarship and undertook complete Beethoven cycles at the Facyl Festival in Salamanca and in Edinburgh. Highlights over the last year have included recitals at Wigmore Hall as part of the Emerging Talent scheme, including the premiere of a new work by Luke Bedford and collaborations with Stephen Hough and Ian Bostridge. Future engagements include complete Tippett and Bartók cycles, and a recital with the soprano Anna Caterina Antonacci at Wigmore Hall, debut recitals at the Louvre and Musée d’Orsay in Paris, return visits to the Concertgebouw and their USA debut.

A monument of chamber music: The string quartet was of central importance to Bartók throughout his career. His six quartets were written (between 1907 and 1939) at crucial turning points in the composer’s creative development. From the elegiac tone of Quartet no.1 (reflecting an unhappy love affair) to the sadness and wry parody of no.6, composed on the eve of World War II, by way of the mirror forms and atmospheric ‘night music’ of nos.4 and 5, they represent perhaps the biggest interpretative challenge in the genre alongside the Beethoven quartets. A challenge triumphantly met here by the Heath Quartet. Future plans include complete cycles of Jörg Widmann’s string quartets at Kilkenny Festival, Berlin’s Boulez Saal and Wigmore Hall, as well as numerous appearances at summer festivals in the United Kingdom and beyond. Their debut recording of Tippett’s string quartets (Wigmore Hall Live) received widespread acclaim and won the Gramophone Chamber Disk of the Year in 2016. A subsequent release on Harmonia Mundi of Tchaikovsky Quartets 1 & 3 was selected as Disk of the Week by both The Sunday Times and BBC Radio 3.
