2018 live album from the Swiss hard rockers. Defrosted released in 1997 – was Gotthard’s very first live album. Still to this day, it’s seen as a cult-milestone within the bands career that helped establish their reputation as the most successful band from Switzerland. And now, 21 years after the first edition, the circle is completed as Gotthard return to Sony Switzerland and Nuclear Blast with Defrosted 2, an ultimate unplugged-compilation of Gotthard’s greatest hits, recorded on the Defrosted Tour in March. Even though the concept was the same as it was over 20 years ago – to capture the unique chemistry between the band and the fans – the circumstances that the band find themselves in are different. Both the band and their audience have grown, and yet after 25 years it’s the same unparalleled intimacy that Gotthard bring to their live performances that makes this record what it is.

Thirteenth studio album by the Swiss rock band. Amongst the usual straight up rock and roll that Gotthard are known for, ‘#13’ offers remarkable variety between songs – such as the powerful opener ‘Bad News’, the fast hard ‘n’ heavy ‘Every Time I Die’, the straight to the point lyrical message of ‘Man On A Mission’, old-school blues-rock with ‘Another Last Time’, epic ballads like ‘I Can Say I’m Sorry’ and unbridled ’70s psychedelia with ‘Rescue Me’.

Gottfried von der Goltz, first violin and conductor of the first-rate Freiburger Barockorchester comes back with a new album dedicated to the violin sonatas of a young – and already brilliant – Telemann. Rarely recorded, these works show a very surprising form as they allow the musician total freedom of expression and ornamentation. These features demonstrate also the unique creative inventiveness already in germ in Telemann’s music.

In January 1783 Mozart advertised in the Wiener Zeitung ‘the publication of three new, recently completed piano concertos’, which could even be played with quartet accompaniment – thus enabling him to reach a wider public. In similar vein, he told his father that they were ‘very brilliant and pleasing to the ear . . . Here and there only connoisseurs will derive satisfaction from them – yet in such a way that the non-connoisseur will also be pleased, without knowing why.’ It’s a fair bet that these dazzling performances by Kristian Bezuidenhout and the Freiburger Barockorchester will meet with the same unanimous approval!

Gottfried von der Goltz – Geminiani: The Art of Playing on the Violin (2017) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

Geminiani’s The Art of Playing on the Violin, op. 9 (published in English in 1751) give us a very precious glimpse of what was musical practice in the first half of the 18th century, then considerably in the grip of the Italian influence. The publication began with some 28 exercises, aimed at perfecting technical skills such as double stops, special bowing, arpeggios, chords, ornamentation, shakes, swelling and softening, staccato, scales galore etc., and finished with twelve “examples”, “twelve pieces in different styles for violin and cello with basso continuo for the harpsichord”. What he meant by different styles are dances (courante: no. IV, gavotte: no. VIII, gigue: no. XI), fugues in the style of Corelli’s sonatas (nos. I, II, VII; while nos. IX-XI could be considered a full-fledged sonata da chiesa) as well as slow pieces in the “pathetic” style. These last, full of affectation, are particularly evocative of opera arias. Violonist Gottfried von der Goltz plays these twelve examplesusing several ornamentation techniques as pinpointed by the composer himself in the exercises – according to the liner notes, this would even be a recording premiere, and quite astonishingly it seems this is really the case. The interpreter begins the recording with a free improvisation, like a kind of offhand praeludium, reminding us that Geminiani was known amongst his student as Il Furibondo. So as not to wary the listener, the recording makes use of various continuo combinations, what with harpsichord, theorbo or organ. Von der Goltz completes the album with two of the Twelve Sonatas op. 4 for violin and basso continuo, composed 1739, two pieces which stylistically make the link between the Italian style (Corelli, Vivaldi) and the French (Leclair, Boismortier), several years before the Quarrel of the Buffoons broke out – that moronic Parisian controversy concerning the relative merits of French and Italian music in general, opera in particular.

Alpha begins a complete cycle of the symphonies by Sibelius (and of his symphonic poems) with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and its new musical director, Finnish conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali. Originally a percussionist, the 33-year-old trained at the famous Sibelius Academy. His career took off after he stepped in at the last minute to conduct the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. In the great tradition of Finnish conductors, Santtu-Matias Rouvali is known for his extremely physical and organic interpretations: ‘Music unmistakeably flows from him,’ commented The Sunday Times. When Bachtrack asked him how he shapes the orchestral sound, he replied: ‘I sing it, I move my hands the way I want it (…) the conductor should be able to show tempo somewhere in the body (…) I was also a drum kit player, so my feet and hands can do different things at the same time. When you read the score, you sing it in your head (…) I think it’s the sense of inside groove that you get from playing percussion which is very important in Sibelius’s music.’

In the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra (GSO) he finds a prestigious cohort of musicians with an impressive discography, and joins a line of their illustrious musical directors, notably Neeme Järvi, the orchestra’s principal conductor from 1982 to 2004, but also Gustavo Dudamel – who made his first major recordings with the GSO – Christoph Eschenbach, Kent Nagano, and others.

It was in 1953, 65 years ago, that Herbert Blomstedt conducted the Gothenburg Symphony for the first time. Since then he has been back on numerous occasions, performing a wide range of works – only not those by Wilhelm Stenhammar. Blomstedt has told of how an international career gave him little opportunity to study and conduct Stenhammar’s music. At the age of 85, however, when he no longer had any obligations as a chief conductor, he thought ‘now or never’ and began to study the composer’s major scores in earnest. And when the time came to perform and record them, what other orchestra could he choose but the Gothenburg Symphony – Stenhammar’s ‘own’ orchestra which he conducted between 1907 and 1922. The works on this disc are possibly the finest orchestral music that Stenhammar composed and he gave the premières of both with the orchestra, Symphony No. 2 in 1915 and the revised version of the Serenade in 1920. In fact, he even dedicated the symphony to the members of the orchestra, his ‘dear friends’.

“CLUB SECRETO” reminds us that Gotan Project’s music grew out of dance music culture. Their first album went from being an underground favourite on the international tastemaker DJ circuit to a word of mouth, million selling hit album that heralded the revival of Tango on the world stage.

Like a kind of musical speakeasy, “CLUB SECRETO” offers plethora of exotic cocktails: Digital Cumbia de Buenos Aires (Lagartijeando), Baile Funk carioca (Sandrinho), Tropical Bass (Poirier), Tribal House (Michel Cleis), Deep Techno (Alex James), Soca from Berlin (Daniel Haaksman) Swing made in Paris (Nicolas Repac), Hip Hop from Tokyo (DJ Muro), etc … And finally ends with a “version” an acoustic remix made in Tucson Arizona by Calexico. Enjoy the ride!

GospelbeacH concluded a three week tour through Spain, Scandinavia and England while the news of a global pandemic loomed. The final night was booked as an “acoustic” show at the bands favorite pub, The Betsey Trotwood in London. The Betsey is where GospelbeacH recorded Another Winter Alive in 2017 as well as the site of London’s Neal Casal tribute just months earlier. Neal’s vibe and everyone’s spirits were riding high in the warmth of the packed pub.

Recording began during the North American leg of the Humanz Tour in 2017, with fewer collaborators than usual. According to Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn, the album was recorded quickly so that the band would have more material to play at future concerts. The album was first teased through a series of posters found at All Points East Festival, and was officially announced two days later. The posters contained phrases and a link to a website, which displayed a short teaser containing a snippet of a new song and the release date. Damon Albarn has described the album as “pretty much just me singing” and “very sort of in the world of 2-D”.
