Joe Venuti pioneered the jazz violin; his virtuoso playing influenced generations of players from Stephane Grappelli to Jean-Luc Ponty and beyond. Famous for his “hot” style, his recordings with guitarist Eddie Lang in the late 1920s – early 30s are jazz milestones. He worked with the Dorseys, Bix Beiderbecke, and Benny Goodman. Venuti was “rediscovered” in the late 1960s. Recorded in 1971, the album also features the superb American pianist Lou Stein. Signor Venuti’s Gershwin Medley covers an emotive Summertime, an infectious ‘S Wonderful, a relaxed Embraceable You, a happy-go-lucky Lady Be Good, and an expressive Rhapsody in Blue that segues into a jumpin’ I Got Rhythm. Venuti bows to his Italian heritage on O Marie before transforming it into a jaunty piece of swing. After You’ve Gone has Joe playing melody-driven improvisations with seemingly limitless creative embellishments. Fats Waller’s Honeysuckle Rose is taken at a medium-slow pace with lots of feel before double timing it. Lover begins romantically, then moves into ¾ before ending up in a romping 4/4. The Dixieland classic Muskrat Ramble has a stately bounce as Venuti trades with the drums. Venuti’s One Finger Joe is a medium-tempo blues that jumps into double time. Originally recorded in 1927, the Venuti-Lang composition Doin’ Things sold over 600,000 copies and made Venuti a star – a fitting piece to end on.

Joe Venuti, regarded by some as the Father of Jazz Violin, enjoyed a recording career under his own billing that stretched from 1926 to 1978. Besides momentary lapses in the years after 1935 and one big gap from 1961 to 1967, this activity is practically continuous. But in his last decade, Joe effectively surpassed his prodigious 1926 to 1960 output in the sheer number of late recordings he made, transforming it into a large and bewildering legacy. For most listeners, a decent collection drawn from the years 1926 to 1935 is sufficient, and the number of compilations derived from that period nearly equals the number of original 78 rpm record releases themselves.

Big Joe Turner was a blues shouter from Kansas City, Mo., who stood at 6-foot 2, weighed 300 pounds and was fundamental to the development of rock ‘n’ roll. He was the first to record “Shake, Rattle and Roll” in 1954. The “Big” was added to distinguish him from the already famous Joe Turner, a stride pianist who was born in 1907 in Baltimore. While touring there in the late 1960s, Turner was asked to record by Germany’s MPS Records. In November 1969, Turner recorded for the label in Berlin backed by bassist Hans Rettenbacher and drummer Stu Martin. All 13 tracks are laced with a stride-piano sound that conjures up images of the 1920s and ’30s. What makes Turner’s stride special is his ability to leave space for the listener to enter songs. Many stride masters from the era tended to flood the ear with seamless cascades of notes. Rosetta, Willow Weep for Me and Effervescent from “Smashing Thirds” are particularly lovely and show off Turner’s beautiful, floral technique.

Call me nostalgic, but in a world that seems to admire novelty above all else, I still love big band jazz. I love all the same stuff I was attracted to right from the start…energy, sound, time, groove…edgy trumpets and old bendy blue notes…bright, aggressive trombones….well you get the picture. So before making this record, I went to my old pal an dlong-time collaborator Jean Frechette and asked him to help me make a disc we could both be proud of. It started with a marathon 2-day big-band-binge, me and him, a big pile of vinyl and CDs, and a significant quantity of more than passable hooch. At the end, shaky but otherwise unscathed, we had agreed on the sound we wanted: resonant, alive, the sound that knocked us out back in the day and made us want to play jazz…Thad Quincy, Francy Boland…like I said, nostaliga. The session was laid out so that people felt at ease and could hear each other (no headphones for the horns!) and Jean went for the bright, clear mix we wanted. After all is said and one, I hope we’ve made a record that is vibrant and swinging – and I hope all you jazz-lovers out there will enjoy listening to it! (Joe Sullivan)

Joe Simon established himself as a poignant, folksy, yet urgent vocalist with his debut album on the Sound Stage label. He was then working with the great disc jockey John “R” Richbourg, who helped him find the right blend of soulful ardor and countrified narrative. While neither “Teenager’s Prayer” nor “Nine Pound Steel” hit the charts, they laid the groundwork for Simon’s monster hits that followed two years later. This album has long been deleted; look for it on collector’s auction lists or in used record stores. –AllMusic Review by Ron Wynn

His plaintive baritone equally conversant with R&B and country phrasing, Joe Simon married the two genres with startling success during the late ’60s, adapting Nashville material to the soul sound and repeatedly coming up a winner. Simon began recording in the Bay Area, but a switch in recording sites (first to Muscle Shoals for Vee-Jay and then to Nashville, upon signing with disc jockey John Richbourg’s Sound Stage 7 label in 1966) heightened his national appeal. With easy access to prime country-oriented material, Simon soon found his true calling, scoring major hits with “Nine Pound Steel,” “(You Keep Me) Hangin’ On,” and the number one R&B smash “The Chokin’ Kind,” penned by Music Row tunesmith Harlan Howard. Still dabbling in country covers after switching to the Spring imprint in 1970, Simon was even more successful when assigned to Philadelphia wizards Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, who produced the moody “Drowning in the Sea of Love” the next year. Simon tried his hand at disco in 1975 with the sizzling “Get Down, Get Down (Get on the Floor)” and “Music in My Bones,” two of the most palatable artifacts of the era. Simon eventually retired from active performing to devote his life to the church; in the 1990s, he recorded a gospel album called This Story Must Be Told.

In 2013, over a quarter century removed from his first album, Joe Satriani uses his solo albums as a way to stretch himself, both to flaunt his skills and perhaps to move him into areas where he’s not quite comfortable. Unstoppable Momentum, his first album since 2010’s boogie- and prog-heavy Black Swans & Wormhole Wizards, finds the guitarist occasionally indulging himself in a bit of swing, letting him ride an elastic beat (“Three Sheets to the Wind” has a supremely delicate touch), and he also digs into a bit of a nasty ZZ Top groove on “Jumpin’ In,” a boogie he turns inside-out on its immediate successor “Jumpin’ Out.” This is a pretty good indication that this is the work of a virtuoso who enjoys playing with his surroundings, tweaking tempos and arrangements to coax out unexpected wrinkles. Compared to Black Swans, this is livelier and fuller, containing a greater variety of textures, rhythms, and attacks, spending not quite so much time with head-down, barrel-headed boogie and rather suggesting jazz, blues, even soul. Satriani often seems a little too restless for his confines — he seems to enjoy when the tempo slows, so he can get a little lyrical — but part of the appeal of Unstoppable Momentum is how Satch decides he should abandon his comfort zone, at least in part. He still adheres too strongly to the heavily phased instrumentals that make him feel stuck in a past before MTV, but he’ll also indulge in a bit of swing, rhythm, and momentum that not only give Unstoppable Momentum character, but suggest there’s an audience outside of guitar fanatics for this densely layered instrumental music. –Stephen Thomas Erlewine
