From Arturo Toscanini and Sir John Barbirolli to Riccardo Muti and Antonio Pappano in our own time, Italian-heritage performers have often brought special qualities of sympathy and understanding to Edward Elgar’s (1857-1934) music. Now comes a new recording made in the ‘boot’ of southern Italy, lending Mediterranean warmth and passion to a trio of Elgarian masterpieces.

In 2018, Sarah Lancman released À Contretemps, a beautiful album recorded with Giovanni Mirabassi, one of the most talented pianists of his generation. After Dark in 2014 and Inspiring Love in 2016, the Quincy Jones-endorsed singer once again managed − without abusing any stylistic effect − to magnify the melodies she was performing. A year later, Lancman once again joined forces with Mirabassi for a tribute to Italian music, covering and adapting eternal themes such as Senza Fine, Sabato Italiano, Il Poeta, Estate, Vedrai Vedrai and Ach, Che Sera, Che Sera. Saxophonist Olivier Bogé lends them a hand on three tracks. Refined and inspired, Intermezzo is a beautiful way to rediscover the Italian repertoire. Adorned with jazzy colours, these covers take on the form of instant classics.  – Clotilde Maréchal

Is Giovanni Mirabassi’s performance music, or an expression of revolt ? Simply both. And of course, the pianist renders these tunes with all his sensitivity and his brilliant technique. He obviously believes that the music speaks for itself. In this album, Giovanni Mirabassi performs as a soloist but three special guests join him in his Cuban recording sessions on the tune Yo me quedo, all members of the historical Ikarere (a Cuban group founded by Chucho Valdés), and singer Angela Elvira Pérez, on the tune Hasta Siempre, in a more destructured version than the one we are used to hearing. Most tunes naturally sound very familiar to us : The Partisan, immortalized by Leonard Cohen,… Lili Marleen, or the very famous Gracias a la vida. Some of the tunes are even closer to a French audience : Le déserteur, by Boris Vian, Libertango, by Piazzolla… Graine d’ananar by Léo Ferré, Le temps du muguet, composed by Francis Lemarque.

Nowadays most performers overlook Haydn’s piano sonatas, mainly because over years these works have been deemed as less-interesting or duller than those by Haydn’s fellow composers, namely Mozart and Beethoven. This unrighteous judgement stems definitely from a sloppy understanding of this composers’s outstanding and unique skills.

Ida Lupino is a fresh and creative album, distinguished by deep listening and focused interaction. At its centre is the remarkable improvisational rapport of two Italian musicians – pianist Giovanni Guidi and trombonist Gianluca Petrella. Their musical understanding – already apparent to listeners who heard them in Enrico Rava’s band – has been further refined in a widely-travelled duo which seeks encounters with fellow improvisers. “Our duo work is really defined by our collaboration with other artists,” Guidi says. The present album both builds on established relationships and the stimulus of new encounters as they are joined by – in Petrella’s words – “two masters of contemporary jazz who are really on our wavelength”.

The Giovanni Guidi Trio plays jazz of uncommon originality and reflective depth. On their second ECM album, Italian pianist Guidi, US bassist Morgan, and Portuguese drummer Lobo continue the work begun on the 2011 recording City of Broken Dreams, with pensive, abstract ballads which shimmer with inner tension. Each of the players has a strong sense for the dialectics of sound and silence. The repertoire is mostly from Guidi’s pen, but also includes the standard “I’m Through With Love”, Cuban songwriter Osvaldo Farrés’ “Quizás, quizás, quizás” (familiar to jazz listeners through, above all, Nat King Cole’s version), and “Baiiia” by João Lobo.

Pianist Giovanni Guidi (born 1985), is one of the most outstanding musicians to have emerged from the ranks of Italian jazz in the last decade and has already made his presence felt on Enrico Rava’s “Tribe” and “On The Dancefloor” albums. Rava praises both Guidi’s “limitless curiosity” as an improviser and his “relentless refinement” of touch and musical taste, and the pianist continually proves that those qualities are not opposites. His first leader date for ECM is a glowing collection of self-penned tunes, simultaneously inner-directed and creatively daring, with many adroit exchanges between the musicians and plenty of space given also to bassist Thomas Morgan, whose role in the Guidi Trio is perhaps analogous to Scott LaFaro’s in the Evans Trio. Portuguese drummer João Lobo is another highly original musician, poetically shading the music with a delicate tracery of cymbals.

The world of jazz is coming alive again after a long, locked-down slumber, and nothing confirms that it has survived the pandemic with energy and heart than the fifth CAM JAZZ release by Italian pianist and composer Giovanni Guidi. Ojos De Gato is a rousing set of anthemic new compositions that have the beguiling characteristic of seeming familiar but also utterly new. With a powerful band around him – tenor saxophonist James Brandon Lewis, trombonist Gianluca Petrella, bassist Brandon Lopez and drummers Chad Taylor and Francisco Mela – he commands a sound that can be as powerful as a full orchestra or as intimate as the smallest combo. The music touches many destinations that have featured in Guidi’s life and imagination, but that can only have been visited virtually in the last year-plus: “Buenos Aires”, “Paris Last”, “Roma 1962”, “Caf’e Montmartre”. It’s a clich’e to refer to any artistic endeavour as a journey, but that’s what Ojos De Gato takes you on. Music in the spirit of the great Gato Barbieri, but in a new chapter. (Brian Morton)

The Italian pianist Giovanni Guidi often says “The good teacher is the one that lets you stare out of the window daydreaming sometimes”. Those who have heard him perform alongside fellow musician Enrico Rava, who spotted his talent at the age of 12, or who have ever had the pleasure of listening to his music, will swiftly make the connection between this lovely little saying and his poetic piano playing. On the album Ida Lupino that he recorded for ECM in 2016 with Gianluca Petrella, Louis Sclavis and Gerald Cleaver, Guidi takes us on a beautiful and dreamlike journey and the lightness of his piano is just sublime. Three years later, Giovanni Guidi now leads a new group for his second album with Manfred Sicher’s label, consisting of tenor saxophonist Francesco Bearzatti, guitarist Roberto Cecchetto, double bass player Thomas Morgan and drummer João Lobo. Opening with the title track, Léo Ferré’s most famous song Avec le temps, is straight away a reminder of how popular music has shaped Guidi’s own music. Avec le temps is an album that takes its time; the improvisations are lengthy and the passages of inter-play are intense but a story flows from Guidi’s fingertips and through the keys and this time his four fellow players join him in telling it. This magnificent contemporary jazz opus is concluded with Tomasz, a moving personal tribute to the Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko who died in July 2018.

If it were possible to relate images with Giovanni Di Domenico’s music, the most plausible would be those of forms painted with perfect balance and purity. Absolutely versatile and eclectic, the Italian composer has long accustomed us to sounds full of ecstatic tension, but pervaded with a refined and cyclical harmony of the parts. Musica Per Insiemi is the result of three recordings with three different ensembles, two more varied in terms of orchestral tones, one for organ only and female voices. In their different physiognomy, the tracks retain a common denominator of beauty. Di Domenico has firmly established the frame of reference in his compositions, the spine of ethereal movements of the piano and fender rhodes. The mood of the other instruments are attached by subtle stratifications, like a river from which its tributaries wind. In this way, the sound matter advances with the solemn calm and brilliance of the individual fragments. The variety of influences remains in the perennial expectation of minimalist whiteness, of contemporary arias with a Nordic flavor or scents of cosmic drones, but always results in a personal and mysterious overview.
