The album contains ten bonus tracks which includes the un-released track Share My Love For any fans of male soul from the ’80s, Glenn Jones should be included in the list of underrated vocalists. His pure, gospel-rooted approach is remarkable for its juxtaposition of sensitivity and grit. Whether he’s delivering widely octave-spanning ballads such as “Show Me,” written by La Forrest Cope, or electronic dance grooves like “Finesse” he gives his all to each song and makes it a successful story. This CD release of his first solo album may surprise fans primarily familiar with later slow-jam hits lie in R&B-driven club workouts. Highlights of the up-tempo selections include “Love Intensity” and “Keep on Doin”,” a duet with wife Genobia Jeter. This reissue deserves a spot in the collection of any serious fan of top-notch soul vocalists.

“You know, I’ve always sort of sat down at night and played Wagner for myself, because I’m a total Wagnerite—hopelessly addicted to the later things especially—and I thought it would be fun to make my own transcriptions.” To manage the ending of the Meistersinger Overture without leaving out any of the themes, Gould had to play four-hands with himself—an instance of what he called “creative lying.”

A fourth piece, Ombres by Barbara Pentland, was recorded but not released until 1992.

The most renowned Canadian classical performer of the 20th century, pianist Glenn Gould remains one of the most fascinating and celebrated figures in all of music, the archetypal riddle wrapped inside an enigma wrapped inside a conundrum. A former child prodigy, his piano artistry was unparalleled, yet he often received less recognition as a virtuoso than as a troubled eccentric; a disconnected recluse notorious for such odd habits as wearing a wool topcoat in the dog days of summer, Gould was a sight to behold even in live performances – seated on a low chair and slumped over the keyboard, humming (sometimes singing) audibly to himself as he played, all the while conducting with his free hand. Gould’s impossible technique and singular behavior were so hotly debated by scholars that often it seemed that his actual skills were negligible; perhaps it’s not surprising that at the age of just 31, he left public performance behind forever, turning instead to broadcasting and writing, as well as an almost obsessive exploration of modern recording technology.

Gould was born in Toronto, Ontario, on September 25, 1932, the product of a musical family that included his father, an amateur violinist, and his mother, a pianist and organist; Edvard Grieg was a distant relation as well. Even at the age of three, Gould evidenced prodigious skills – in addition to his absolute pitch, he was already able to read staff notation, and just two years later he authored his first compositions. At the age of ten, he began lessons at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, and in 1944 took home the piano trophy from the annual Kiwanis Music Festival, the only such contest he ever entered in response to his strong opposition to the idea of competitive performance. In 1945, Gould passed his associateship examination as a solo performer at the Royal Conservatory; that same year he offered his first public performance on the organ, a concert reviewed under the headline “Boy, Age 12, Shows Genius as Organist.”

At the age of 14, Gould made his debut as soloist at a Royal Conservatory orchestral performance of Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto. His first public recital was in 1947, and featured works by Scarlatti, Beethoven, Chopin, and Liszt; his debut network radio recital followed over CBC airwaves in 1950, and marked the beginning of his long relationship with broadcasting and recording. In early 1955, Gould made his New York debut, and within hours signed with Columbia’s Masterworks imprint. His first recording, a performance of Bach’s Goldberg Variations, became an instant best-seller, and he went on to make over 60 more recordings for the label in the years to follow. In 1957, Gould toured Europe, and at the peak of Cold War tensions he became the first North American ever to perform in the Soviet Union. His concert career continued to great success during the early ’60s, but in Los Angeles on April 10, 1964 – with no advance warning, and without fanfare – he delivered his final public performance.

Gould’s decision to retire from live performances was in part a result of his desire to focus more of his energies on writing, broadcasting, composing, and conducting; his first major new project was a “sound documentary” called The Idea of North, a philosophical musing on the meaning of northern existence. Keeping in contact with the outside world primarily over the telephone, Gould was often out of the spotlight for long periods of time, but in 1981 he broke with his long tradition of not re-recording material to return to the work with which he remained most closely identified, the Goldberg Variations; his decision was motivated in large part by the vast improvements in technology during the quarter century that separated the two recordings. Months later, he formed a Toronto chamber orchestra, serving as their conductor on a recording of Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll; it was his last major work – Gould died on October 4, 1982, after suffering a stroke. He was just 50 years old. ~ Jason Ankeny

When we realized in early March that, due to the Covid-19 global pandemic, freelance musicians were going to be out of work for quite a while, I decided to make a recording to help make up for musicians’ lost income with some music that would lift the spirits of listeners stuck inside at home.

The album is set to “pay what you want” with all monies from the EP shared between the out-of-work musicians who created it.

After the intimate Between Two Shores in 2018, Glen Hansard pushes the folk-rock boat out a little further with This Wild Willing. The Irishman releases a delicate fourth French solo album, enriched by his residency at the Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris. The words were written in the capital, and the music in Angers. The former Frames guitarist, who added another feather to his cap as an actor and singer-songwriter, brought about twenty musicians into the studio. Their improvisations birthed twelve refined folk songs in which plucked strings, whispered voices and the piano piercing openwork melodies, whose contemplative songwriting takes center stage.  – Charlotte Saintoin

Prolific singer-songwriter Glen Hansard has enjoyed an illustrious career that boasts credits with The Frames, The Swell Season and a starring role in the motion-picture film, Once, for which he won an Academy Award. Rhythm and Repose, an album over twenty years in the making, is Hansard’s debut as a soloist. The emotion-provoking work is led primarily by piano and acoustic guitar. Standout tracks include “Love Don’t Leave Me Waiting,” “Maybe Not Tonight” and “You Will Become.” The album also finds Hansard collaborating with music greats, Brad Albetta, Ray Rizzo, Nico Muhly, Rob Moose, David Mansfield, Javier Mas and half of Bruce Springsteen’s current horn section. Rhythm and Repose proves why Hansard is widely considered one of music’s greatest songwriters.

The new album is his first in over three years and follows 2012’s solo debut Rhythm & Repose, which Billboardhailed as “Hansard at his most engaging,” while The Wall Street Journal furthered, “Hansard’s distinguishing trait as a songwriter is a heavy-handed earnestness.”

Didn’t He Ramble was produced by Thomas Bartlett (The National, Sufjan Stevens), a frequent collaborator of Hansard’s, and Grammy winner and former Frames band-mate David Odlum (Paloma Faith, Tinariwen). The album, which was recorded in New York, Dublin, Chicago and France, is Hansard’s most intimate and elegant record since his work in Once and features guest appearances by John Sheahan (Dubliners), Sam Beam (Iron and Wine) and Sam Amidon.

For his third studio album, the former leader of The Frames broadens his field of action even more. With Between Two Shores, Glen Hansard is no longer just an icon of contemporary folk rock, but also an all-around musician and songwriter who is willing to venture down new avenues, no matter how surprising they may be. His 2018 edition slaloms between a rock that could almost pass for some Springsteen, an almost chamber choir soul and, of course, deeply moving folk rock. It’s not surprising then that the subtle and genial jazz drummer Brian Blade took part in this sophisticated record. But it’s in the most intimate sequences that Hansard proves to be the most astounding, such as when he blends his voice with a crepuscular trumpet on Wreckless Heart or when he makes his melody grow throughout Movin’ On. With restrained organ playing here, heavy brass instruments there (Roll On Slow, Lucky Man), and some dreamy piano parts (Time Will Be The Healer), Glen Hansard orchestrates every moment of his album with real skill. It’s impressive.

Glen Campbell – Wichita Lineman (1968/2016) [Official Digital Download 24bit/192kHz]

This album stayed #1 on the 1968 charts for five weeks! Includes the hit title cut plus Dreams of the Everyday Housewife.

The most eclectic of Glen Campbell’s late-1960s albums, and his first number one LP, 1968’s WWichita Lineman runs from the orchestral melodrama of the title track–the signature song of Glen Campbell’s entire career, apart from perhaps “Rhinestone Cowboy”–and the follow-up hit “Dreams of the Everyday Housewife” to a wide variety of covers in some unexpected styles. These include excellent takes of Tim Hardin’s “Reason to Believe” (possibly the best of the many covers of Hardin’s definitive original), a Dean Martin-like middle-of-the-road version of Sonny Curtis’s “The Straight Life,” and Sonny Bono’s divorce saga “You Better Sit Down Kids.” More unexpectedly, Campbell also essays solid versions of Otis Redding’s “Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay” and the Bee Gees’ “Words,” adding his own country-pop sound to the familiar originals with no damage. The album’s most unusual track, however, is the spoken-word “Fate of Man,” adapted from a poem by Campbell’s late grandfather.
