We Fall doesn’t announce itself with much fanfare, and it exits as swiftly as dusk transitioning into night or night into dawn (which gives the whole-album listening experience a sense of fleeting). Orchid Classics presents one of two releases showcasing winners of the Carl Nielsen Competition 2019 (see the parallel programme of clarinettist Blaz Sparovec). Praised by Bachtrack for the “subtle elegance” and “luminous joy” of her performances, French flautist Jos’ephine Olech trained with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Academy and is currently principal flute of the Rotterdam Philharmonic. For her first concerto recording with the Odense Symphony Orchestra and conductor Anna Skryleva, Jos’ephine Olech chose a trio of 20th-century works reflecting countries with which she feels a personal connection as an artist: Nielsen’s beautiful, witty Flute Concerto (1926); the scintillating Flute Concerto No. 1 (1902) by Dutch composer Theodor Verhey, and Jean Francaix’s dazzling Flute Concerto of 1966.

In her debut album, the flutist emphasizes this contrast between the mystical, at times even religious connection to nature and the modern age, which is characterized by technology. For Joséphine Olech, the musical sounds of nature are depicted in the works of Debussy, Takemitsu, and Crumb. Introduced by the mystical dimension of Claude Debussy’s Six Épigraphes antiques, her debut album features Toru Takemitsu’s Toward the Sea III, commissioned by Greenpeace in 1981 for a campaign to protect whales, and Vox Balaenae, inspired by George Crumb’s recordings of humpback whale songs. Both works are masterpieces of the 20th century.
At the other end of the sound spectrum lies man-made modernism and technology, represented by two pieces that use electronic or minimal music processes. With Rekindle by Michel von der Aa, Joséphine Olech dares to make the first recording of a flute’s combative dialogue with a playback. Steve Reich’s Vermont Counterpoint also presents a special challenge: It is a typical work of minimal music, which overlays a total of 12 voices, all played by the French flutist. At the end of the contrasting program, Toru Takemitsu’s Le fils des étoiles, based on the music of Eric Satie, is a thoughtful-meditative piece that serves as a question mark: Is man becoming aware of the need to reconnect with nature?

Joseph Trapanese is best known for his sleek, ominous score work for blockbuster films like Tron: Legacy, Straight Outta Compton, Oblivion, and the Raid series. Born in New Jersey, Trapanese earned his B.A. in composition from the Manhattan School of Music. He went on to study at UCLA for his M.A. in music for visual media and ended up teaching electronic music and composition at the school from 2008-2011. As a composer, arranger, and producer for film, television, theater, and video game music, he has collaborated with a number of mainstream musical acts. His first major break came in 2010 when he worked with Daft Punk on the sweeping digital soundtrack to Disney’s Tron reboot/sequel. Trapanese followed that success by creating a score with Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park for the American release of the 2011 Indonesian martial arts film The Raid: Redemption (he would continue without Shinoda in 2014 with The Raid 2). That same year, he helped with arrangements on a handful of tracks for M83’s breakthrough hit Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, which led to the pair’s collaboration on the 2013 Tom Cruise sci-fi epic Oblivion. He also reworked Moby’s “Extreme Ways” for The Bourne Legacy. Other notable scores include Earth to Echo (2014); The Divergent Series’ second installment, Insurgent (2015); and the landmark rap biopic Straight Outta Compton (2015). In the studio, in addition to M83 and Moby, he has worked with Active Child, Dr. Dre, Kelly Clarkson, 3OH!3, and Dia Frampton (as the duo Archis).

Recorded in 1958 and released on the Folkways label in 1959, this album introduced American listeners to Joseph Spence’s unique guitar and vocal styles. These field recordings by musicologist Sam Charters capture Spence in a relaxed, expansive mood—only one of the six selections in the set is under five minutes in length. Spence’s guitar style was due in part to the D tuning of his bass string, which produced a lower bass sound. Whereas many critics have called Spence’s vocal style unorthodox, they have found his guitar playing spontaneous and iconic. Some music critics have gone so far as to refer to him as the “Thelonious Monk of folk guitar.”
The vinyl reissue of Music of the Bahamas, Volume 1 includes Sam Charters’ liner notes. This reissue is part of Folkways Records’ 70th anniversary celebration series, revisiting some of the most iconic and influential albums released on the record label.
