For over two decades, Tom Skinner’s luminous musical talents have prospered and blossomed in London’s vibrant underground. Whether it be collaborating with such untouchables as Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood in their band, The Smile, or his exploits with Sons of Kemet (which split up earlier this year), co founded alongside friends Oren Marshall, Seb Rochford and Shabaka Hutchings, the 42 year-old drummer is enjoying a period of remarkable productivity. Voices of Bishara caps off a fantastic year for the artist, assuredly demonstrating his immense technical and creative capacity. This is also his first album signed under his birth name, which surely aligns with the words from his release statement: ’this record is an attempt to put something truthful into the world, through collaboration and community, at a time of rising dishonesty and disinformation.’

In a conscious shift of aesthetics, the very European Gods turned their eyes on America with the band’s fourth album, producing its most ‘rock’ record to date, a consistently strong smash. Opening with “Our House,” it all seems (powerful) business as usual – odd sonic loops, rhythm patterns suddenly exploding into mass drum/riff combinations. But the difference here lies with the lyrics – discounting earlier covers, Treichler for the first time sings in English here and throughout, a conscious audience targeting which he addressed in contemporaneous interviews. “Gasoline Man” turns out to be the big shift, revamping what sounds like an old ZZ Top riff into as classic an American rock song as any – blues lyrical structure, loving the road and the motor – yet with the Gods’ unique sonic signature present, revamping and restitching the past into a cleaner, newer form that avoids sounding just like another bar band. Underground hit single “Skinflowers” marries a powerful pulse and razor-sharp feedback stabs with a perversely catchy lyric; other tracks like “TV Sky” and the wickedly Guns n’ Roses-quoting “The Night Dance” pile on the sound and space in equally gripping measure. “Summer Eyes,” an intentional Doors tribute done after numerous Jim Morrison/Treichler comparisons in the past, even has a mid-song Manzarek-style organ break, but ends the album on a disturbing note, slow riff trudge samples fading out under Treichler’s dark, sly take on America. In sum, a wonderful album that never got its proper due.

The Psalmes, Songs and Sonnets von 1611 war William Byrds letzte Veröffentlichung.

You know these songs. Even if you’ve never even been to Scotland, even if you’re not a seafaring type, you know them. That’s because the twelve anthems—and make no mistake, these are anthems—The Real McKenzies have picked for this new album have been sung by others for decades, if not centuries. A dual celebration of Scottishness and the band, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, Songs Of The Highland, Songs Of The Sea drops on Fat Wreck Chords on November 18th and is comprised entirely of famous traditional sea shanties that are roughly divided, as the record’s title suggest, between land and sea. And even though the idea for the album was initially proposed by guitarist Mario Nieva, these songs speak to frontman Paul McKenzie’s heritage as well as who he is, and who he always has been. Some might have been written long before he was born, but these are still his stories, wound inextricably into his life experiences.

Revolver is the seventh studio album by the English rock band the Beatles. It was released on 5 August 1966, accompanied by the double A-side single “Eleanor Rigby” / “Yellow Submarine”. The album was the Beatles’ final recording project before their retirement as live performers and marked the group’s most overt use of studio technology to date, building on the advances of their late 1965 release Rubber Soul. It has since become regarded as one of the greatest and most innovative albums in the history of popular music, with recognition centred on its range of musical styles, diverse sounds, and lyrical content.

The Beatles recorded Revolver after taking a three-month break at the start of 1966, and during a period when London was feted as the era’s cultural capital. Regarded by some commentators as the start of the group’s psychedelic period, the songs reflect their interest in the drug LSD, Eastern philosophy and the avant-garde while addressing themes such as death and transcendence from material concerns. With no plans to reproduce their new material in concert, the band made liberal use of automatic double tracking, varispeed, reversed tapes, close audio miking, and instruments outside of their standard live set-up. Among its tracks are “Tomorrow Never Knows”, incorporating heavy Indian drone and a collage of tape loops; “Eleanor Rigby”, a song about loneliness featuring a string octet as its only musical backing; and “Love You To”, a foray into Hindustani classical music. The sessions also produced a non-album single, “Paperback Writer” backed with “Rain”.

In the United Kingdom, the album’s 14 tracks were gradually distributed to radio stations in the weeks before its release. In North America, Revolver was reduced to 11 songs by Capitol Records, with the omitted three appearing on the June 1966 LP Yesterday and Today. The release there coincided with the Beatles’ final concert tour and the controversy surrounding John Lennon’s remark that the band had become “more popular than Jesus”. The album topped the Record Retailer chart in the UK for seven weeks and the US Billboard Top LPs list for six weeks. Critical reaction was highly favourable in the UK but less so in the US amid the press’s unease at the band’s outspokenness on contemporary issues.

Dredg is one of those rare bands who truly cannot be categorized. Gavin Hayes’ vocals cascade like a waterfall over a sea of scratching Latin rhythms, dulcimers, guitars in odd time signatures, and prog rock-inspired drums. Hayes shares his penchant for Bulgarian chants in “Triangle” and “Same Ol’ Road.” “Whoa Is Me” could provide the soundtrack to all things haunted. Whether it’s a piano and strings or Cure-influenced (specifically the Cure’s “Fascination Street”) guitars, instruments fill the time between songs on El Cielo. They offer a respite from the monotony and the slow-fast-slow style of songwriting. In an odd moment at the end of “Whoa Is Me,” a soft-spoken public radio DJ speaks of a jazz number from 1944. The full-throttle rocker “It Only Took a Day” is one of the highlights. El Cielo is unlikely to become a hit on commercial radio, but perhaps Dredg could find their niche on college stations.

A pair of very unusual albums – back to back on a single CD! Stolen Goods is a totally cool, totally groovy album from the 70s – one that features large orchestral arrangements of themes from the classics – but all augmented with plenty of wild contemporary touches! There’s moogy electronics, funky drums, wordless vocals, and lots of other hip 70s elements – including the kind of horn section that would have made Mozart, Chopin, or Beethoven wince – had they lived long enough to hear the approach to their songs served up on this British album! From what we can tell, Dr Teleny is Zack Laurence – who’s billed as the musical director on the album – serving up transformed tunes with titles that include “Power Play”, “Wild Turkey”, “Rhapsody From Hunger”, “Superjoy”, “Johann Sebastian Rock”, and “The People Yes”. Next up is Viva Vivaldi, served up by Italian conductor Ettore Stratta – who you’ll know from both sound track and easy instrumental modes – getting a lot of hip help here from arranger Chico O’Farrill! The songs are all from Vivaldi – as you’d guess from the title – but Chico’s charts add in plenty of sweet 70s touches, including electric bass, keyboards, and other instrumentation that moves things way past the baroque generation – even making some tunes groove in a surprising way. There’s still enough strings in play to tie the songs to classical roots – and titles include “Gloria Allegro”, “Mandolin Concerto In C Adagio”, “Suite From Four Seasons”, “Flute Concerto In D”, “Concerto In E”, and “Concerto In G For Two Mandolins”.

Maybe not exactly the first Dizzy that comes to mind when discussing jazz, this Jamaican-born, British-raised trumpeter overcame whatever burdens that nickname may have wrought to become a highly respected player in the New York scene. He enhanced that rep by recording some truly excellent albums for the Savoy, Blue Note and Prestige labels among others. His robust and passionate playing styles always seemed to inspire other musicians in his company. The contributions of the esteemed trio invited; pianist Walter Bishop, Jr., bassist Doug Watkins and drummer Art Taylor unilaterally match the front man’s fire and bold approach to each tune.

Dizzy Gillespie’s contributions to jazz were huge. One of the greatest jazz trumpeters of all time (some would say the best), Gillespie was such a complex player that his contemporaries ended up copying Miles Davis and Fats Navarro instead, and it was not until Jon Faddis’ emergence in the 1970s that Dizzy’s style was successfully recreated. Somehow, Gillespie could make any “wrong” note fit, and harmonically he was ahead of everyone in the 1940s, including Charlie Parker. Unlike Bird, Dizzy was an enthusiastic teacher who wrote down his musical innovations and was eager to explain them to the next generation, thereby insuring that bebop would eventually become the foundation of jazz.

Smash Palace are a power pop rock band currently based out of Southern New Jersey.

The Butler brothers quickly formed a new band, Smash Palace, and signed with Epic Records in 1985. The new line-up included Brian Butler (lead vocals), Stephen Butler (lead guitar and vocals), Phil Rizzo (bass guitar), Harry Lewis (drums) and Greg Persun (rhythm guitar).

The band’s first self-titled LP was released in the fall of 1985 along with an MTV video of the first single, “Living on the Borderline” (directed by Nigel Dick).

Smash Palace then toured extensively throughout the United States and Canada with Mr. Mister and the Cruzados. Greg DiDonato (keyboards) joined the lineup for the tour. When Smash Palace’s A&R man, Dick Wingate, left Epic Records in 1985, he asked the band to come on over to his new label, Polygram Records. Unfortunately, once the band left Epic, the offer from Polygram melted away.

The band recorded demos for tracks that were intended for their second album, including “Cold Wind”, “Girl with the Stars in Her Eyes”, “Stranger Than Strange” and “I’ll Be There” (which was later reworked and recorded on the band’s Over the Top CD release in 2004) and these tracks were played on Philadelphia radio station WMMR-FM’s local music program Street Beat, but never officially released.

Dick Hyman is a virtuoso jazz pianist whose career spans nearly 70 years. Fundamentally a swing pianist, he is also known for his research and mastery of all jazz piano styles known to man, from ragtime and bebop and beyond. His debut album for Venus Records is a Harry Warren songbook. Supported expertly by bassist Jay Leonhart and drummer Chuck Redd, Hyman performs these evergreens such as “You’re My Everything” and “42nd Street” with vigor and inventiveness. The tone of his piano is beautiful, and this particularly good-sounding disc captures it well. Recommended.
