A luminous, easily recognizable instrument, and a symbol of Italy’s learned and popular musical tradition, the mandolin has been the subject of several major compositions throughout the history of music. First of all, the famous concertos by Vivaldi: two of them appear here on this intensely romantic album (‘Come une volta’) that Julien Martineau – one of today’s greatest figureheads of the instrument – has recorded for Naïve. We also finally get to hear, thanks to the world premiere recording by Julien Martineau, the legendary, virtuosic and poetic second concerto (of which the manuscript was lost) by Raffaele Calace (1863-1934), who was often described as “the Paganini of the mandolin”. The instrument is in fact so close, in many ways, to the violin. The Caudioso concerto completes an album which, steeped in authenticity and musical excellence, honors and lends prestige not only to the art of mandolin, but also to Italian and musical culture as a whole.

When his mother brought Stanley Turrentine’s Salt Song LP back from a trip to Canada, Julien Lourau, then a teenager, was impressed by the scope of the sound and the groove of the saxophone. He was also charmed by the lush arrangements and funky sound of the record, typical of releases on the CTI label. Created by producer Creed Taylor, CTI left an imprint in the minds of 70s jazz fans much like Blue Note did in the 60s, and it even ended up releasing work by artists who started out on this mythical label such as Stanley Turrentine and Freddie Hubbard. The two even shared the same sound engineer, the great Rudy van Gelder.

Beyond their lifelong interest in keyboard instruments of all types (organ, harpsichord and clavichord in the case of Bach; modern piano as a percussion instrument in the case of Bartók), other shared concerns connect these two giants of classical music who at first glance appear to be polar opposites.

Pochette rose et titre près du cœur, Aimée pourrait entraîner sur une fausse piste, celle déjà mille fois creusée par l’auteur de Love (2013), dont le savoir-faire pop et le crooning ont si souvent été mis au service des chroniques sentimentales.
Mais dès les premiers mots de La Fièvre – « Je veux plus écrire les peines, que le féminin m’a fait » –, single de lancement et chanson introductive du cinquième album de Julien Doré, on comprend que ce ne sont pas les affres amoureuses qui font monter ici la température. Car dans ce monde qui « s’est déplacé quelques vertèbres », réchauffement climatique, dérèglements environnementaux et sociétaux prennent le pas sur les romances au fil d’un disque baptisé en fait du prénom de la grand-mère et de la mère du Gardois des Beaux-Arts.
