The 15th studio long-player from the progressive rock/AOR legends — and first collection of new material in 16 years — The Prelude Implicit is the first Kansas album to feature new vocalist and keyboardist Ronnie Platt, who replaced founder Steve Walsh after the former announced his retirement in 2014. The 12-track set also marks the studio debuts of keyboard player David Manion and guitarist Zak Rizvi. That’s a lot of new blood, but rest assured, The Prelude Implicit is very Kansas-y. Platt’s amenable voice is custom made for melodic rock — think Tommy Shaw-meets-Paul Rodgers — and the presence of founding members Phil Ehart (drums) and Rich Williams (guitar), alongside longtime violin/guitar player David Ragsdale and bassist Billy Greer, helps to further ground the proceedings, resulting in something that sounds both familiar and forward thinking. Front-loaded with co-lead singles “With This Heart” and “Visibility Zero,” the former a soaring, heartfelt anthem and the latter a muscular classic rock jam that invokes the band’s “Carry on My Wayward Son”-era, the technically superb The Prelude Implicit — literally — hits all of the right notes, and should please longtime fans, despite the absence of Walsh. From the proggy, nearly nine-minute “Voyage of Eight Eighteen” to the hook-filled, festival-ready nostalgia piece “Summertime,” it’s clear that Kansas still has gas in the tank, and with some new parts in place, it looks like they’ve still got some road to cover. – AllMusic Review by James Christopher Monger

There can be few more unlikely success stories than that of Kansas, and yet 2020 marks 49 years in the business for a band who dressed like farmhands and adopted the violin as a de facto lead instrument. With notable exceptions, the songs of Kerry Livgren were what made Kansas great. Following the guitarist’s third and seemingly final departure in 2000, the Livgren-less configuration took 16 years to construct new music.

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Subliminal Sounds

…this unique, dark and sparse, tribal, minimal synth, drone, trance, new age recording from the mysterious Kano. Previously only issued as an obscure cassette back in 1986 which is now much sought after. Runes is much darker and brooding compared to its new age peers of the era. Drums, metalophone, synths and more leads you on a deep inwards trip via damp, cold and foggy caves to the ancients. Runes are reminders of our ancient future. They reveal messages of wisdom that are held deep within our hearts and consciousness. Runes remind us of the forgotten past, opening our minds into the Universal Mind. Archetypal runic symbols appear throughout the earth as relics of many ancient cultures including Hindu and Native American, but their primary origin as tools of divination is most often given as Nordic and Germanic. Their true source is perhaps, too ancient and arcane for us to ever know with historical certainty. The music of Runes music is of such power and beauty, that it can be effective for inducing states of consciousness that allow deep meditation, channeling and trance. Runes is an extraordinary musical experience. Kano, described as a trance musician from Colorado on the original release, was Don Campbell in real life and the Runes cassette was eventually issued under his name too. Born in 1946 in San Antonio, Texas, Don Campbell spent his high school years in Europe, studying classical music with the legendary Nadia Boulanger and Jean Casadesus at the Fountainebleu Conservatory in France. A graduate of the University of North Texas, he began his professional career as a music critic and teacher for seven years at St. Mary’s International School in Tokyo. Campbell’s interest in sound, healing and education have taken him to over forty countries through the years.

This special DVD presentation of Jimi Hendrix: Electric Church presents the legendary guitarist in full flight at the 1970 Atlanta Pop Festival before the largest US audience of his career.
This critically acclaimed film combines color, 16mm multi-camera footage of Hendrix’s unforgettable July 4, 1970 concert in its original performance sequence together with a new documentary that traces his journey to the festival amidst the dark shadow of civil rights unrest, the unrelenting toll of the Vietnam War and a burgeoning festival culture that drew together young people across the country who were inspired by the Woodstock festival.
The film details Hendrix’s integral role in drawing nearly 500,000 people to his Electric Church- a dusty, scorching hot pecan orchard in Byron, Georgia some 100 miles south of Atlanta. Together with Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell and bassist Billy Cox, Jimi skillfully blended favorites such as “Purple Haze,” “All Along The Watchtower,” and “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)” with confident renditions of new songs such as “Freedom” and “Straight Ahead” that had not yet been released on album. As a colorful fireworks display stretched overhead across the night sky, Jimi performed the “Star Spangled Banner” to the wild delight of the massive audience.
The performance footage of the Experience has been carefully restored from the original negative in high definition. The audio soundtrack includes stereo and 5.1 surround sound mixes by Eddie Kramer directly from the original master tapes.
This expanded DVD features three songs not seen in the television broadcast. This includes, “Red House,” “Freedom” and a special presentation of “Room Full Of Mirrors” that features all of the existing performance footage combined with never before seen photographs of the Atlanta performance.

Label/Cat#: Reference Recordings # RR-120SACD | Country/Year: Europe 2003 | Artwork

This “Prof. Johnson” Surround sound recording exceeded all my expectations! I never thought Prof. Johnson would buck the classical music recording industry standard of having the orchestra in front and only using the rear channels for ambient information. To my great and pleasant surprise, the orchestra surrounds the listener with the strings reaching around to the left side, the trumpets coming from the right rear and the snare drum from the left rear, etc. Also the center channel is well utilized, revealing the inner voices of the orchestra. One almost gets the sense of being in the middle of the orchestra facing the conductor but with the orchestra still correctly positioned with first violins being on the far left, string basses on the far right. For you bass lovers, the bass was deep, full, round and plump!! It was a fantastically thrilling experience, and so incredibly life like and with such a warm acoustic with great reverberation of the hall so well captured. The recording was made in the Community of Christ Auditorium in Independence Missouri. Michael Stern and the Kansas City Orchestra have given us polished performances I found to be very well done with passion and verve. I feel with this recording, Michael Stern and the Kansas City Orchestra are now major player’s in the classical music world. Superb!! Highly recommended. FYI – This is a 5.1 channel Surround recording (Bass is incredible even without the LFE channel. I listened both with and without the LFE channel on.) sa-cd.net

Japanese jazz is one of jazz’s best-kept secrets. But, it would be a a huge loss to miss “Mine”, the sublime first album of Kosuke Mine Quintet, released in 1970 on the legendary Three Blind Mice label. The record, made of 4 long pieces where Kosuke Mine’s sax (alto and soprano) and Hideo Ichikawa’s fender Rhodes never stop to respond each other is a monument of dense and spiritual jazz.
