Live at the Orpheum is a live album by the band King Crimson, released by Discipline Global Mobile records in 2015. The album was recorded on the 30th of September and 1st of October at the Orpeheum Theatre in Boston, Massacheussets on the band’s The Elements of King Crimson US tour of 2014.

King Crimson’s 2014 tour marked guitarist, founder and leader Robert Fripp’s return to active service after a long legal battle with Universal Music Group. This line-up of King Crimson is notable for featuring three drummers, Pat Mastelloto, Gavin Harrison and Bill Rieflin. The other members of the band are long standing bass player Tony Levin, Mel Collins who was previously in the band from 1970 to 1971, also playing on Red in 1974, Jakko Jakszyk on guitar and vocals and Robert Fripp.

All the shows on the tour were recorded on multitrack with Jakko Jakszyk sorting through the recordings. The two shows at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles were chosen for release. The album features 41 minutes of selections from the set and will be released on the 13th of January, 2015 on CD/DVD-A and heavy-weight vinyl.

DGM and Panegyric are proud to present King Crimson’s Heroes EP – recorded live on the European tour of 2016. The title track sees Robert Fripp reprise the unforgettable guitar role he created for the original David Bowie studio recording in the same city in 1977, particularly poignant in the year of Bowie’s death. Also featured on the EP are a ten minutes recording of Easy Money (Paris), a song that varies in length and solos from night to night and is always a fan favourite, an edited version (featuring the “song section”) of Crim Classic Starless often a set closer, always a stand-out moment and a recording of the three drummers’ showpiece The Hell Hounds of Krim (both from Vienna) – all previously unreleased live recordings.

The EP is completed with a ‘radio edit’ of Heroes.

A full live album, recorded on the 2016 European tour will be issued in September 2017.

Earthbound, originally released in 1972, was one of the earliest (if not the first) “official bootleg” released by a major rock band, consisting of a series of deliberately lo-fi live recordings of King Crimson’s Islands era line-up on tour in the USA. When issued, because of its mid-price it was excluded from the main album charts in the UK but topped the mid-price charts rubbing shoulders with Jim Reeves & Mantovani. Atlantic in the USA didn’t even bother to release it. By then, the band had broken up & the label had already been alerted to the likelihood of a new King Crimson line-up promised for later in the year. Like the later live album, USA, Earthbound remained unavailable in the early CD era, with both finally being released in 2002 on CD. Ironically this non-availability served to enhance interest in the album while DGM’s live releases made fans aware that there was a larger story to be told of this line-up’s history. When Robert Fripp was asked to guest on the second Grinderman project, Nick Cave noted: “I wanted to work with Robert Fripp because he has done some of the most uniquely unsettling guitar work I have ever heard along with some of the most delicate and finessed” explained Cave. “I grew up listening to a lot of the King Crimson stuff. The vinyl copy of the phenomenal live album Earthbound, is one of my most treasured possessions.”

King Crimson – Discipline (1981/2016)

When King Crimson leader Robert Fripp decided to assemble a new version of the band in the early ’80s, prog rock fans rejoiced, and most new wave fans frowned. But after hearing this new unit’s first release, 1981’s Discipline, all the elements that made other arty new wave rockers (i.e., Talking Heads, Pere Ubu, the Police, etc.) successful were evident. Combining the futuristic guitar of Adrian Belew with the textured guitar of Fripp doesn’t sound like it would work on paper, but the pairing of these two originals worked out magically. Rounding out the quartet was bass wizard Tony Levin and ex-Yes drummer Bill Bruford. Belew’s vocals fit the music perfectly, sounding like David Byrne at his most paranoid at times (the funk track “Thela Hun Ginjeet”). Some other highlights include Tony Levin’s “stick” (a strange bass-like instrument)-driven opener “Elephant Talk,” the atmospheric “The Sheltering Sky,” and the heavy rocker “Indiscipline.” Many Crimson fans consider this album one of their best, right up there with In the Court of the Crimson King. It’s easy to understand why after you hear the inspired performances by this hungry new version of the band.

King Crimson – Beat (1982/2016)

Beat is not as good as its predecessor (1981’s Discipline), but it’s not too shabby, either. The ’80s version of King Crimson (Robert Fripp, guitar; Adrian Belew, vocals/guitar; Tony Levin, bass; and Bill Bruford, drums) retains the then-modern new wave sound introduced on Discipline. The band’s performances are still inspired, but the songwriting isn’t as catchy or strong. The moody love song “Heartbeat” has become a concert favorite for the band, and contains a Jimi Hendrix-like backward guitar solo. Other worthwhile tracks include “Waiting Man,” which features world music sounds (thanks to some stunning bass/percussion interplay), and “Neurotica” does an excellent job of painting an unwavering picture of a large U.S. city, with its jerky rhythms and tense vocals. With lots of different guitar textures, bass explorations, and uncommon drum rhythms present, King Crimson’s Beat will automatically appeal to other musicians. But since they’re fantastic songwriters as well, you don’t have to be a virtuoso to feel the passion of their music.
