When we turn our attention inward, we encounter the worlds of consciousness and unconsciousness, the dark inner space of visions and dreams and the workshop of our soul. Every human being follows a unique road of confusion and error on the journey towards inner truth. Communion with oneself transforms the sharpness of the day, leading our soul through the dreams and inner movements that bring unguarded freedom. At the end of all actions, pure Being remains. The greatest of all universal energy – Love.

This is my oldest sister, Mary (Marlene is her stage name). She recorded this back in 1957 at the age of 19. If you like Lena Horne or Eartha Kitt, you’ll definately like Marlene Cord. This cd was remastered well…originally it was on a 78 speed LP. I, myself, was a former keyboardist for the Vogues oldies group from Pittsburgh. We were a very musical family of 8 kids.

Marlene (1933-2018) was the stage name of the 21-year-old big band singer who, in 1955, married trombonist, composer and arranger Billy Ver Planck. Coincidentally, it was also the year of her first recording session for the Savoy label. The title song of her debut album was ‘I Think of You with Every Breath I Take,’ and it was proudly described by the label as “A new listening thrill!” Marlene was of the kind of singer who rejected pop material and familiar standards to concentrate on little heard and nearly forgotten songs of quality. Accompanied by an all-star jazz group, she demonstrated a clear, in-tune voice, good feeling for the lyrics, and a certain freshness of sound—not to mention a musician’s sense of phrasing. Still, as the demand for jazz vocalists declined in the 1960s, Marlene slowly moved away from the scene and, for years, devoted herself mainly to singing in thousands of commercial jingles. After succeeding in that field for over a decade, she decided to return to her jazz roots under the direction of husband Billy, acting and recording this time as Marlene Ver Plank, and establishing herself as a performer in her own right.

This album, her last for Blue Note, features Shaw’s interpretation of This Time I’ll Be Sweeter, also recorded by Linda Lewis and Martha Reeves and later Angela Bofill and Roberta Flack and Love Has Gone Away previously recorded by The Spinners. One of the standout cuts on the album, It’s Better Than Walkin’ Out, provided a historic first for Blue Note when a top ten 12” disco single version was remixed and issued.

Alba is the premiere recording of trumpeter Markus Stockhausen’s duo with pianist Florian Weber, a formation in existence for some six years now. Though very different in their connections to the language of jazz, both musicians share a deep interest in the process of creative expression: of looking inwards and outwards with intensity at things, for echoes, resonances, insights.

Initially, the duo experimented with electronic sounds, also to create the “opening sounds” that have attracted Stockhausen since he first played with Rainer Brüninghaus’s trio in the early 1980s. But with Weber, the realization soon came that the duo sounded stronger playing acoustically. “Florian has this incredible touch and possibilities to modulate the sound of the piano. There are so many colours available”. Alba is Markus Stockhausen’s first ECM recording since Karta was released in 2000. Florian Weber, a German Jazz Critics prize winner who has played with Albert Mangelsdorff, Lee Konitz and many others, makes his ECM debut here.

What difference does it make for music whether it is composed or improvised? What difference does it make for a narrative whether it is performed orally or recorded in writing? Markus Stockhausen’s quartet album “Tales” suggests such questions and provides more than one answer. Music exists virtually on recordings, in scores, in repertoires and traditions. But it is only real when it is heard and experienced together with listeners.

Markus Stockhausen is considered one of the best trumpeters worldwide. He constantly researches productively and successfully in the intersection of Jazz, classical music, new music, Improvisation and electronic experiments for new possibilities of expression. “Wild Life” is here and now his opus summum on three CDs, a real Statement of what is conceivable and feasible today, of what Markus Stockhausen himself calls “intuitive music”. The Wild Life Sessions, which took place in Bonn at the beginning of 2018, are also a musical reunion with Stockhausen’s brother Simon Stockhausen, with whom he had not played live or in the Studio for fifteen years. Simon Stockhausen has become an internationally known Sound Designer, which you can hear well here – he is also the main responsible for mixing the music. The rhythmic foundations are laid by the two drummers Bodek Janke and Christian Thomé. Thomé was also involved in the successful album “Far Into the Stars”, as well as the Cellist Jörg Brinkmann. Florian Weber is another musician with whom Markus Stockhausen has been working successfully for many years. This resulted in wide-breathing music, which unfolds its epic magic directly through the class and imagination of the participants and develops a magnetic pull force. But also the casual Groove comes to its right in many surprising places. You can see that “Wild Life” is imaginative art on different levels, with very different approaches.

In addition to his famous large-scale song cycles, Schubert also composed and published numerous smaller song compilations. Some of these “miniature cycles” consist of songs written at different times and under different circumstances, but which Schubert himself assembled on the basis of thematic and textual connections. The selected cycles appeared in print during Schubert’s publishing career of just eight years. Today, these songs are usually performed as individual works and taken out of context – here they are presented in the order carefully planned by the composer, just as they were heard at the famous “Schubertiades”.

Markus Maskuniitty’s debut recording together with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra together with its chief conductor Sakari Oramo, showcases four concertante works for horn and orchestra covering a period of one hundred years (from 1849 to 1951). Robert Schumann described the horn as the ‘soul of the orchestra’ and he had a profound affinity with the instrument. The most substantial of Schumann’s works featuring the horn is the Konzertstück for four horns and orchestra, Op. 86. Schumann considered the work as one of his best achievements as a composer. During 1849, Schumann wrote a total of three works featuring the valve horn. The Adagio and Allegro for horn and piano, Op. 70 may be considered a precursor to the Konzertstück and is a central work in the Romantic horn repertoire. This recording includes an orchestration by conductor Ernest Ansermet. Camille Saint-Saëns wrote a large number of concertante works, including a masterfully crafted concertpiece for horn and orchestra in 1887. It highlights Saint-Saëns’s mature skills in orchestral writing and as a composer of solo instrumental music. Final piece of the recording is Reinhold Glière’s Horn Concerto. Completed in 1951, it was the composer’s swansong. In this romantic concerto one can hear echoes of Tchaikovsky and other great masters of Russian classical music.

This new album is a welcome departure from a traditional organ programme, being instead a collection of the artist’s own transcriptions, all of which are played with astonishing virtuosity and are guaranteed to make the listener smile. There is something here for everyone from Rossini’s William Tell Overture to Mexican dances.

Markus Becker – Reger: Piano Concerto & Solo works (2019) [Official Digital Download 24bit/48kHz]

Back when Reger was writing his Piano Concerto, 1910, Debussy was working on La Mer and Stravinsky his Firebird. Vienna was becoming the crucible of the new dodecaphonism style. Reger kept his distance from all these tendencies, preferring to explore his own path, which, while sometimes difficult, was always marked by polyphony and counterpoint. His music’s architecture was always made up of self-contained cells, like a kind of careful patchwork in which the various elements didn’t always seem to relate to each other. Just listen (or re-listen, rather) carefully to the Concerto and you will get a taste of this juxtaposition of modernity with a desire to remain rooted in the past. Markus Becker (who recorded all of Reger’s solo piano works over twenty years) rounds off the collection with the Épisodes, written in the same year as the Concerto, but in an almost-miniaturist style – which just goes to show that all of Reger’s work isn’t marked by gigantism as these pieces all clock in at three or four minutes each. In them, the composer returns to the path of his great inspirations: the later Brahms and Beethoven’s final works including the Bagatelles.
