Born in London of Italian-French parents, Sir John Barbirolli (1899–1970) trained as a cellist and played in theatre and café orchestras before joining the Queen’s Hall Orchestra under Sir Henry Wood in 1916. His conducting career began with the formation of his own orchestra in 1924, and between 1926 and 1933 he was active as an opera conductor at Covent Garden and elsewhere. Orchestral appointments followed: the Scottish Orchestra (1933–36), the New York Philharmonic (1936–42), the Hallé Orchestra (1943–70) and the Houston Symphony (1961–67). Barbirolli guest conducted many of the world’s leading orchestras and was especially admired as an interpreter of the music of Mahler, Sibelius, Elgar, Vaughan Williams, Delius, Puccini and Verdi. He made many outstanding recordings, including the complete Brahms and Sibelius symphonies, as well as operas by Verdi and Puccini and much English repertoire.

Taking its title from the village in which Leos Jan’acek was born, this album of chamber works by the prize-winning Portuguese composer S’ergio Azevedo reveals his deep affinity for the music and personality of the great Czech composer. Using fragments from Jan’acek’s In the Mists and On an Overgrown Path has allowed Azevedo to create a “doppelg”anger” of the original material. It draws his music in unsuspected directions, either abandoning the fragments as the music develops or generating new aural contexts. The resultant music represents an unclassifiable but profound communication between two composers from two different epochs.

Marina Baranova knows a thing or two about conjuring fantastical worlds. Since her childhood when she’d sit with her fairy tale books open in front of the piano translating the pictures she saw into sound worlds up to her last album, where she envisioned a darker side to Debussy, the Ukrainian composer and pianist’s imagination has always played an active role in the music she plays. For her latest release, ‘Atlas of Imaginary Places’, she lets it run the show. For it, Baranova worked with the Danish visual artist Christian Gundtoft and Ukrainian writer Volodymyr Kompaniets to conceive more than just an album. “I wanted to create this alternative listening experience,” she explains, “Don’t underestimate the power of imagination, now more than ever, it’s important to remember we have this treasure within us.”

Marilyn Moore was an American jazz singer during the 1950s. She recorded one solo album, Moody Marilyn Moore. Her vocal style was similar to Billie Holiday’s, and according to jazz critic Will Friedwald, Holiday and Moore were friends. She was the first wife of saxophonist Al Cohn and the mother of guitarist Joe Cohn.
Not exactly a household name, Marilyn Moore was married to jazz musician Al Cohn when she recorded this album, her only release, in 1957. Cohn supports his wife in the studio on sax and clarinet alongside other top notch players including Milt Hinton on bass, Barry Galbraith on guitar, Joe Wilder on trumpet, Don Abney on piano and Osie Johnson on drums. Moore’s vocals drew comparisons to Billie Holiday when this album first came out.
