The rock quartet Moon Relay plays instrumental music that evokes hallucinations, dancing and thought forays into a fairy-tale world. In 2013 the band released a now long-sold-out 12-inch disc on the HUBRO label, and the following year their album debut on the Fysisk Format label received critical acclaim. With their new album, Full Stop Etc, they have returned to HUBRO with a record that takes the band in an even more creative and distinctive direction. The band’s members draw inspiration from a variety of genres, including the psychedelia of the 60s, krautrock, techno, no wave, surf rock, free jazz, electroacoustic music and the studio experiments of Joe Meek. Moon Relay on this album consists of Daniel Meyer Grønvold, Håvard Volden, Ola Høyer and Martin Smådal Larsen, all of whom are familiar names from what one could call Oslo’s noise, jazz and experimental rock scene. The members of the band also play with Jenny Hval, Cortex, Syntax TerrOrkester and Now We’ve got Members, and had played together in various constellations since 2006 before finally gathering around a drum machine, quite literally, and starting Moon Relay. The band gives them the opportunity to unite their interests in repetitive music, krautrock and electronic dance music with their abiding attraction to loud and noisy guitar playing. Full Stop Etc is different from the group’s eponymous debut album in a number of ways. The tunes are shorter and more stringently arranged, and the band has opened doors to new rooms. The album was created to a greater extent in the studio this time. The musicians wanted to distance themselves somewhat from a classic “rock band in a room” sound. They wanted to take the liberty of making a more collage-like album. The album was recorded partially at Malabar Studio and partially at the band’s own home studio over a long period of time, and was mixed by noise musician and producer Lasse Marhaug. The result is a creative album that is both captivating and surprising, and that represents a significant extension of the band’s universe.

In March of 2010 Megadeth hit the road in celebration of the 20th anniversary of their classic 1990 album, Rust In Peace. The show was filmed on the last night of the tour at the legendary Hollywood Palladium, not far from where Megadeth was formed in 1983. The band played Rust In Peace in its entirety, including all-time classics Holy Wars…The Punishment Due and Hangar 18. The set list also featured several other fan favorites, including Trust, Symphony Of Destruction and Peace Sells.

Originally released on MPS Records, this is a subtle and fairly creative duet set featuring pianist Monty Alexander and the Jamaican guitarist Ernest Ranglin. On seven standards (including “Just Friends”, “If I Should Lose You” and “Fly Me To The Moon”) and three originals, Alexander and Ranglin listen closely to each other and indulge in some tight musical interaction. Although boppish, the music is not overly predictable; the musicians’ mutual respect is obvious. Well worth searching for.

Monty Alexander’s career was beginning to take off at the time of this 1971 club date at the Monticello in Rochester, NY. Accompanied by Dave Brubeck’s former bassist, Eugene Wright, and veteran drummer Bobby Durham, who was recording extensively with Oscar Peterson, the young pianist kicks off the set with an ambitious, quote-filled rendition of a great standard “It Could Happen to You.” The inclusion of several familiar popular tunes of the period, namely Michel Legrand’s haunting “Summer of ’42 Theme,” Henry Mancini’s bittersweet “Love Story Theme,” and even “We’ve Only Just Begun” (a mega-hit for the Carpenters which actually began life as background music for a bank commercial), doesn’t detract from the album in the least, due to Alexander’s imaginative approaches to each of the tunes. The one original of the date is Alexander’s funky “Monticello.” This well-recorded date has been out of print since BASF quit manufacturing records in the U.S. in the mid-’70s, so it may be somewhat difficult to acquire.
