As the fourth-most populous country in the world, it should be no surprise that Indonesia has a burgeoning rock scene. Unfortunately, given the music world’s tendency to focus its attention on Europe and the US, countries like Indonesia tend to get forgotten about. This is a crying shame, given the talent of musicians like those in Mooner, whose new album Tabiat is a fantastic trip through psychedelic stoner-rock.

Moondog’s second self-titled album (the first one came out in 1956 on the independent jazz label Prestige) was the idiosyncratic composer’s first release in 12 years, and it shows how much Moondog’s already rich music had matured since 1957’s The Story of Moondog. Where Moondog’s ’50s records were jazz-based, Moondog showcases the composer’s orchestral side; producer James William Guercio assembled an orchestra of over 40 musicians from the classical and jazz worlds (including flutist Hubert Laws and bassist Ron Carter), and although the pieces are quite compact — ranging from the expansive three-part ballet suite “Witch of Endor” to the eight-second spoken poem “Cuplet” — Moondog uses the expanded range of tonal colors and dynamics impressively. For someone who spent most of his career performing solo on a street corner in Manhattan, Moondog’s arrangements on pieces like the jazz-canon’s “Stamping Ground” are not only admirably complex, but also richly melodic. Although Moondog is often thought of as a mere exotica novelty, thanks to the composer’s eccentricities, it is, in fact, one of the finest third stream jazz albums of its era. The best-known track on this album, “Bird’s Lament,” was the uncredited basis for dance DJ Mr. Scruff’s “Get a Move On,” which was used in an extended series of minivan commercials in 2002. – Stewart Mason

‘Little Ghost’ marks the return of LA-based trio Moonchild with their fourth album to date. Led by first single “Too Much to Ask”, the release sees multi-instrumentalists Amber Navran, Max Bryk, and Andris Mattson channel boundless sonic energy as they explore some of the most personal aspects of human relationships. With a unique style of soul and new-school jazz that has cemented their spot in the LA music scene, Moonchild continue to intertwine lyrical concepts with expansive glistening melodies, harmonies and irresistible interludes. Taking its name from the most emotional of celestial bodies (in the eyes of the band), ‘Little Ghost’ follows the widely-praised ‘Voyager’ [2017], ‘Please Rewind’ [2015] and ‘Be Free’ [2012] which were shown love by DJs like Gilles Peterson, Don Letts and Huey Morgan (BBC 6Music) to Jamie Cullum (BBC Radio 2), Jamz Supernova (BBC 1XTRA) and Anthony Valadez (KCRW) alongside Jazz FM who named the band Soul Act Of The Year 2018. The releases garnered press and line praise from The Fader, Echoes Magazine, Saint Heron, Kick Mag, KCRW and Okayplayer and racked up 8.5+ million streams Spotify for ‘Voyager”s “Cure” and 4.5 million streams Spotify for “The List” – for which the video has also reached 7+ million views YouTube – taken from the same LP. Moonchild have collaborated and toured with highly-respected names in the soul-jazz crowd including Stevie Wonder, Jill Scott, India.Arie, Leela James, The Internet, and built up a host of iconic supporters from Robert Glasper (who collaborated with Navran on his latest release with R+R=Now) and Laura Mvula to James Poyser, Jazzy Jeff, Jose James, 9th Wonder and Tyler, The Creator.

MOON RELAY – Full Stop Etc. (2016) [Official Digital Download 24bit/44,1kHz]

MOON RELAY – Full Stop Etc. (2016)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 35:13 minutes | 379 MB | Genre: Rock
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Hubro

The rock quartet Moon Relay plays instrumental music that evokes hallucinations, dancing and thought forays into a fairy-tale world. In 2013 the band released a now long-sold-out 12-inch disc on the HUBRO label, and the following year their album debut on the Fysisk Format label received critical acclaim. With their new album, Full Stop Etc, they have returned to HUBRO with a record that takes the band in an even more creative and distinctive direction. The band’s members draw inspiration from a variety of genres, including the psychedelia of the 60s, krautrock, techno, no wave, surf rock, free jazz, electroacoustic music and the studio experiments of Joe Meek. Moon Relay on this album consists of Daniel Meyer Grønvold, Håvard Volden, Ola Høyer and Martin Smådal Larsen, all of whom are familiar names from what one could call Oslo’s noise, jazz and experimental rock scene. The members of the band also play with Jenny Hval, Cortex, Syntax TerrOrkester and Now We’ve got Members, and had played together in various constellations since 2006 before finally gathering around a drum machine, quite literally, and starting Moon Relay. The band gives them the opportunity to unite their interests in repetitive music, krautrock and electronic dance music with their abiding attraction to loud and noisy guitar playing. Full Stop Etc is different from the group’s eponymous debut album in a number of ways. The tunes are shorter and more stringently arranged, and the band has opened doors to new rooms. The album was created to a greater extent in the studio this time. The musicians wanted to distance themselves somewhat from a classic “rock band in a room” sound. They wanted to take the liberty of making a more collage-like album. The album was recorded partially at Malabar Studio and partially at the band’s own home studio over a long period of time, and was mixed by noise musician and producer Lasse Marhaug. The result is a creative album that is both captivating and surprising, and that represents a significant extension of the band’s universe.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 32:55 minutes | 385 MB | Genre: Electronic
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Moon Hooch

“Recorded in a series of stunning, one-take performances, ‘Life on Other Planets’ may be the purest distillation of Moon Hooch’s sound ever put to tape. There’s no studio magic here, just three virtuosic musicians who seem to share a telepathic connection, one that transcends language and genre and tradition. The songs on ‘Life on Other Planets’ mix elements of jazz, funk, R&B, and EDM, swirling them all into an instrumental maelstrom the band refers to as “cave music” (think house music, but more jagged and primitive). The performances don’t just beg for a physical reaction, they command one, exploding out of the speakers with melodic pyrotechnics and infectious percussion that resonate on a deep, primordial level. Though the basic structures for many of these tunes were settled in advance, most of what you’ll hear on the album was completely improvised on the spot, much like one of the band’s legendary live shows.”

• Formed in the college town of Umeå in northern Sweden in 1987, MESHUGGAH have spent the last twenty seven years and cumulative fourteen releases developing, exploring, and redefining their complex, inimitable approach on the art of expressing the music they hear in their heads. A group that has not sounded like anyone else in over two decades, MESHUGGAH are one of the few purely and honestly lateral-thinking forces, genuinely dedicated to pushing the boundaries of extreme music, simply because doing so comes naturally to them.
• Celebrating over a quarter of a century as one of the spearheads of their genre, MESHUGGAH are now treating their fans to the release of a new DVD entitled »The Ophidian Trek«. This audio-visual encounter contains a full MESHUGGAH live show, recorded on May 03, 2013 at their co-headline show alongside DEVIN TOWNSEND at Brixton Academy, London.
• The thirteen tracks on »The Ophidian Trek« represent a great retrospective of MESHUGGAH’s fulminant carrier.Kicking off the show with ‘Swarm’, just one of many from their most recent album »Koloss« (2012), going back to »ObZen« (2008) with songs like ‘Lethargica’ and ‘Bleed’ and all the way to the very early days of »Chaosphere« (1998) with the track ‘New Millenium Cynadie Christ’.
