Dead & Company is an American jam band consisting of former Grateful Dead members Bob Weir (guitar), Mickey Hart (drums), and Bill Kreutzmann (drums), along with John Mayer (guitar), Oteil Burbridge (bass/drums), and Jeff Chimenti (keyboards). The band continues the strong live tradition of the Grateful Dead, creating unforgettable experiences at their shows, no two performances being alike.
To date, the band has released no studio recordings, but all of their concerts to date have been (or are being) released as albums.

David Deacon. Blues and Roots music attached to a 6’5” rangy and rugged looking guy. He has a voice that sounds like it could have an atomic decay number attached to it. His bluesy, old school rock/ballad storytelling spends time digging into the psyche of both someone who has travelled a lot of roads and the people who he met along the way. If you like Dire Straits or Tom Waits, maybe Leonard Cohen (if he rode motorcycles), Dylan for sure, perhaps Van Morrison, you will definitely love this. Johann Stamitz is considered the father of the Mannheim School and thus the founder of modern classical orchestral music. At the beginning of our century, Hugo Riemann even described him as Haydn’s long-sought predecessor, who was to fill the unseemly gaping hole between the so completely different styles of the Baroque and Classical periods with a certain exclusivity. In the compositional output of Johann’s two famous sons Anton and Carl Stamitz, solo concertos and concertante symphonies occupy a large place. As virtuosos on their instruments, they created compositions not least for their own use. Surprisingly, however, only a few concertos by Johann Stamitz have survived, most of them violin concertos that are indebted to the model of the instrumental concerto developed by Antonio Vivaldi. The fast first movements are in ritornello form, i.e., the succession of tutti ritornellos and violin solo episodes. Technically demanding are the double stops and chords combined with wide leaps in the first movement of the second concerto. Polyphonic, polyphonic playing on the violin seems to have been an absolute speciality of the violinist Johann Stamitz.

This release is a source of pride for guitarist Alberto Mesirca for several reasons. First, it’s the culmination of a recording endeavour begun in 2016, which sprung from an idea Mesirca had during an after-concert dinner with his beloved, late mentor, violist Vladimir Mendelssohn, who particularly loved yet had never performed Paganini’s 15th Quartet (more like a viola concerto with strings and guitar accompaniment). Mesirca then managed to convince Vladimir Mendelssohn to prepare scores for the complete repertoire.
Second, the other musicians who join the ensemble on this recording are among the finest, most sensitive and passionate musicians Mesirca has had the pleasure of meeting.
The Quartets in this three album set are not in chronological or catalogue order because the full cycle of 15 Quartets will be realised with a second upcoming release, and Mesirca decided instead to create a common thread with the tonalities and musical development among the quartets.
This recording is dedicated to Vladimir Mendlessohn who brought the group together with his inspirational musicality and presence. This almost certainly represents the violist’s final studio recording, and he is featured here as the incredible virtuoso he was.

Daniel Matejča – Ysaÿe: Six Sonatas for Solo Violin (2023)

“The artist’s first task is to forget himself.” This statement, bold in its time, has been ascribed to Eugène Ysaÿe, referred to as the “King of the Violin”, who as a composer and performer considerably contributed to the modernisation of violin playing. In 1923, he was so deeply impressed by J. S. Bach’s Violin Sonata No. 1 in G minor, BWV 1001, as performed by Joseph Szigeti, that within a few hours (!) he sketched a set of six sonatas as a counterpart to Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas, BWV 1001-1006. Ysaÿe dedicated each of his sonatas to a superb contemporary violinist, tailoring it to his style. Technically reaching the limits of the instrument, the pieces placed enormous requirements on the dedicatees (Szigeti, Thibaud, Enescu, Kreisler, Crickboom, Quiroga), yet they remain challenging for the violinists of today. One hundred years after Ysaÿe created the set of six sonatas, this formidable task has been undertaken by the outstanding young Czech virtuoso Daniel Matejča, the winner of the Eurovision Young Musicians competition (2022), Telemann Violin Competition (Poznan 2020) and Jugend musiziert (Halle 2019). Matejča studied with such distinguished violinists as Boris Belkin and Christian Tetzlaff, and, after collaborating to acclaim with the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, has been invited to perform with other renowned orchestras. Supraphon has shifted the 100-year-old concept to the 21st century and commissioned a composition that would reflect Ysaÿe’s sonatas, as well as young violinists’ musicality and virtuosity. Jana Vöröšová’s Obsession II is both answer and challenge.
