Long known as the steady diplomat who kept together the oft on-the-brink alliances of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young—until he couldn’t—Graham Nash sounds, at 81, feisty on his seventh solo album. There’s an edgy urgency to the music and his famous high tenor on the vibrant “Right Now.” “Now that I realize just how I am/ When all is said and done/ What a life I’ve lived … Here I am/ Still living my life/ Right now/ Right now!” he declares. And his life is not one of easy chairs. “Golden Idol” takes on the politicians who turned the other cheek in the Capitol insurrection of January 6, 2021. “I know they’re lying/ ‘Cause their lips are moving,” Nash sings. “They’re trying to rewrite recent history/ When the MAGA tourists took the hill/ They will not stand up/ ‘Cause they’re bought and paid for.” “Stars and Stripes” is jangling folk with excellent harmonies that finds Nash poking at the root of American divisiveness: “Sometimes I wonder why the world is like it is/ Frozen by the fear of change/ If we keep believing all the lies meant to divide us/ There’s no one else that we can blame.” And while he aims to keep moving forward, he’s not exactly looking to reinvent himself. “A Better Life” is imbued with that easy Laurel Canyon familiarity on which he made his bones in America. It almost feels like a follow-up to “Teach Your Children” told from the other side, with Nash singing, “We’re going to make it a better life/ Leave it for the kids … one we can be proud of/ So at the end of the day, we can laugh and say that we left them a better life.” Sweet and simple, “It Feels Like Home” is like an echo of “Our House.” It’s one of several songs written for his new wife of only a few years, along with “Love of Mine,” a bit of a heartbreaker with high and lonesome harmonica accompanying an apology for hurt feelings. Sharply bowed strings lead the way for “I Watched It All Come Down,” as the singer recalls, “I watched it all come down/ To a rock and roll parade … I watched it all come down/ To a paperweight at the business end of town/ Loaded up and loaded down/ It’s a mess.” Nash has said that the song is about the thrill of making music with David Crosby, Stephen Still, and Neil Young, but also sadness that they let emotions (and, let’s be honest, substances) get in the way of them making more. And looking fondly back on another part of his history is “Buddy’s Back,” a sweet tribute both to Buddy Holly—complete with a “Peggy Sue”-inspired riff—and his old pal in the Hollies, Allan Clarke. – Shelly Ridenour

The prosperous Hanseatic city of Hamburg with its thriving cultural life always attracted capable minds. One of these was Thomas Selle (1599-1663), who worked here as city cantor from 1641. Around 1650, he compiled what he considered to be the most relevant of his own sacred compositions for printing, in order to preserve his work for posterity. As was customary at the time, there were different instrumentation variants of the works, so that he presented several alternatives in Concertuum Latino Sacrorum. The result is a fascinating compendium by one of the most important composers of his time.

“Every song on Glass Animals’ debut is a potential earworm. ZABA’s songs are both atmospheric and totally danceable, ideal for lazy Sunday mornings and hazy Friday nights. Produced by Bayley under executive production of Epworth, the album is bizarre, gorgeous, playful and dark—and it’s absolutely mesmerizing.”
– Paste Magazine

ZABA is the debut studio album by English rock group Glass Animals, released on 9 June 2014 by Wolf Tone Limited.

ZABA is primarily a psychedelic indie pop record.[9] The album’s sound is characterized by obscure tropical percussion and jungle timbres. This musical motif reflects lead singer David Bayley’s exotic subject matter, which was inspired by the William Steig children’s book The Zabajaba Jungle. To achieve this sound, Bayley would record ambient sounds of a field near his house or the chewing of rabbits and other animals, and percussive sounds of cooking utensils and children’s toys. Some of the songs were based specifically on certain adventure novels: “Toes”, for example, intends to recreate the atmosphere of The Island of Doctor Moreau and Heart of Darkness.

The Deluxe Edition features 4 stripped back versions of the album tracks.

Robert Schumann was a modern musician in opposition to the formality of the German musical world – his Fantasie of 1836 is a noble homage to Beethoven as well as a love song to his future wife Clara Wieck. The Albumblätter (‘Album Leaves’) is an extraordinary set of short pieces that range in content from dramatic and dreamy moments of lost youth to a delightful lullaby for his daughter Marie, while the brief Canon über ‘An Alexis’ is an early piece reflecting Schumann’s fascination with Bach.

Callas’ unique impersonation of the tragic heroine culminates in a hair-rising mad scene, never being equaled!

Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757) is one of the most original italian composers of the first half of the eighteenth century. Born in Naples the same year as two other icons, Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel, Scarlatti’s enormous output includes 555 surviving keyboard sonatas, and can be considered an encyclopedia of literature of all time for its vastness, invention, and variety of writing.

Only a fraction of Scarlatti’s compositions were published during his lifetime: in 1738, Scarlatti oversaw the publication of 30 of his works, which he titled “Essercizi” (Exercises).

Scarlatti’s keyboard sonatas are single movements, mostly in binary form, and some in early sonata form, and mostly written for the harpsichord or the earliest pianofortes (only four for organ). Some of them display great audacity in the way dissonances and unconventional modulations to remote keys are used.

This album is part of a recording series, a growing project, created by our label and involving fifteen young pianists from all over the world.

The versatile pianist Giovanni Mazzocchin does not hesitate to entertain with rapid tempo and a brilliant touch. Nevertheless, the slower moments are treated with a serious, poetic, and never sentimental approach.

The recording was made using a couple of Sennheiser microphones (8000 series) and Prism Sound pres/converters.

Rachmaninov’s two Suites for two pianos are among the most original works for the medium, no less inspired or tuneful than the better known concertos. The early Suite No. 1 ‘Fantaisie-tableaux’ shows the influence of Chopin, Liszt and Tchaikovsky, but is no mere bloodless imitation of their music. Written while Rachmaninov was working on his Second Piano Concerto, the Suite No. 2 represents a maturer idiom.
